I smoked a Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta tonight and was not very impressed. I have really like all other Toranos that I have smoked (this was the first Reserva Selecta that I have tried), but this one just tasted a little bitter. Maybe I just got a bad one because this was supposed to be a really good smoke.
MasterAggie

If it was bitter it was probably too young. If they are rolled too young they can be really bitter and just need to sit in your 'dor a lot longer than normal.

cohibasymas, yeah, I smoke a pipe. The Dunhill London Mixture is pretty good stuff, but I don't konw much about Karl Eric, though. I really like Dunhill Night Cap, and I enjoyed Frog Morton McClelland. I have a tin of Peterson Sherlock Holmes blend that's been hanging around, unopened, for a while. I had another Peterson blend I wasn't too thrilled about, and I kinda put my pipes down for a bit. I think I'm going open this up soon and try it out.

BBRex:

Karl Erik is a great pipemaker who stopped exporting to the U.S. for a while, like this website explains.

Here are some of his pipes.

Unfortunately here in BCS there is little to no selection of good pipe tobaccos, but I've putted around the internet and have found some good deals. Let me know how the Sherlock Holmes goes. Is that a latakia/perique blend? links?

Here are some reviews on Sherlock Holmes:

http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=S&TID=932

I have a small collection of pipes, all bought new (no estate pipes). I have:

1 Savinelli
2 Peterson pipes, including a churchwarden
1 Sasieni
1 Stanwell freehand style
1 Cassano
1 Jobey
1 drugstore style I don't use.

The Savinelli is by far my best pipe, both for looks and for smoking. The Sasieni comes in second. I like the rest, but they don't seem to have the same feel. All but maybe the Savinelli (which I got as a gift) cost less than $150. I keep waiting to get to the point where I don't mind dropping the money for a Dunhill pipe. Hasn't happened yet, though.

I'm in CS, which is part of the reason I don't smoke as much. I'm moving to Houston soon, though, so maybe that will change.

That sounds like a fabulous collection. I envy your Savinelli. How does it smoke? And your Churchwarden, very impressive. I have but 2 pipes, my Karl Erik and a very old meerschaum that belonged to my grandfather.

That said, I have just recently started pipe-smoking again. I'm having to re-train my palate, and having a lot of fun.

A note to you fellow cigar smokers:
I can't tell you how much pleasure I've derived from pipe smoking. I recommend it to any cigar lover.

You can get a cigar caddy for about that if you're looking for portability.

Well, I just don't smoke enough to justify getting something super nice. So I figure something like this will suit me just fine. I usually just go to the the Cigar shop and buy one or two and then leave and that's it. I don't even need a humidor. But it would be nice to have some backups eventually.

just get a tightly sealed tupperware container, a fresh sponge, a plastic bag with a few holes in it, and some distilled water.

place a piece of distilled water soaked spunge in the bag and place the bag in tupperware.

put cigars in tupperware ensuring they will not become wet from the sponge. ta da! tupperdor.

this should hold you over.
MasterAggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What glove said will work but you can get the same situation as if you over wet a humidifier only worse in a tupperdor or coolerdor since the plastic won't absorb any of the moisture. If you search cigar caddy, otterbox, etc... you can get one for under $20 and probably save yourself a little money and if you're golfing, fishing, etc... you will be able to protect your 'gars from breaking as well. One thing that was just mentioned though is distilled water. Always use distilled water unless your humidifier calls for tap water.

cohibasymas, the Savinelli is a great smoker, and it is even less than $100. Here's one like it:

Most of my pipes are actually less than $60. I think the Sasieni is my favorite all-round pipe, and I think it was $45. It has a nice a nice feel to it, smokes well, and is cheap enough to carry around. The finish looks a little rough, but even that's not so bad. There's a tobacco shop in San Antonio, just south of North Star Mall that has a pretty good selection of pipes and tobacco.

I've heard that the foam florists use works great for that, as well. Or you can try getting something more purpose-made, such as clay discs or this:

I have an Otterbox and keep it in the truck all the time. I have the 15 cigar size, and usually keep around 5-8 cigars in it with the cutter and lighter. It probably sees more temperature extremes than I should allow, but I have never had a cigar come out anything but perfect (I do not allow any cigar to be in there more than a week or two).

Thanks glove. How much of the sponge do I put in? How long does it last? When do I need to add more water? Blah blah blah...hehehe!!!

Soaking a sponge with distilled water will you give you close to 100% humidity, which is WAY too much ... you want somewhere in the range of 60-70%, depending on your preferences.

So, you need something to balance it out. If you use a 50-50 mix of distilled water and propylene glycol (you can order it online, or even get it premixed with water at any cigar shop), and soak a piece of green Oasis floral foam (the wet kind, that can hold water, and NOT the dry kind), you'll be golden. Too much humidity is just as damaging to smokes as too little ...

I use a plastic travel soap dish that I drilled about 30 holes in. I cut a piece of foam slightly smaller than the dish, soaked it with the mixture, and put it in my humidor. Perfection. Here's more info. than you'll ever need on such matters:
