Bender has forgot more about modern guns and suppressors than I'll ever hope to learn. He is truly a guru on the subject.

My ears are so damn bad that I still wear hearing protection even though I got a suppressor on. It's weird, I can't hear well but I'm sensitive to loud noises.
My Otologist guy says I have what they call " Hyperacusis" .
So you're probably correct as can be, that a guy with good hearing probably doesn't make that much difference on caliber specific cans on sound reduction.

AI confirms what the sales dude at my LGS said, that decibel reduction difference for a 556-specific can vs a larger 30 cal can should be negligible. I just liked the idea of the versatility and only wanted to buy one can with one tax stamp at the time.. if the prices of these things are going to go way down for these hunks of metal with no jail time and no tax stamps, then i'll just go ahead and buy caliber-specific cans for every future gun.

Good information.
My wife shoots a lot with me. She has great hearing and says she can tell the difference of a .30 can on my .22 cal versus a .22 can on it.
Damn sure will save folks a lot of money if it makes no difference in reality.

That's really not true, unfortunately.

The old conventional wisdom was since cans were such a PITA to buy and took forever, if you were only going to buy 3, get a .30 cal rifle suppressor so you could shoot 308/5.56/300blk/whatever through it, a .45 pistol can to shoot .45 and 9mm, and a .22 suppressor.

Rallycap mentioned PewScience earlier. The guy running it is an Aggie engineer who was disappointed in how his first suppressors sounded compared to what the sales dude at his LGS told him the performance would be like, and started testing them. I don't know jack about cans compared to that dude, and a lot of what I know was learned by reading his reports and listening to his podcast. Yall really should check it out.

To date, there are 110 tests with 5.56 hosts on his website, including both the 10.3" MK18 and the 14.5" M4.

If you go and sort those tests by overall suppression, there are exactly 6 .30 cal suppressors in the top 50 5.56 tests.

https://pewscience.com/rankings

Most 30 cal suppressors are not providing a "negligible" difference compared to a dedicated 5.56 can. A great example of this is to look at the two reports on the Otter Creek Polonium and Polonium 30. One has a 5.56 bore and one has a 30 cal bore. The performance differences between the two are pretty severe.

If you really wanted to do a "one and done" can, best bet is stuff like the Liberty Precision Torch 762 or Otter Creek Infinity. Outside of that, you're trading suppression for host flexibility.

If I had to do suppressors all over again I would have done a few things differently.

1) Researched the way the suppressor attaches to the muzzle. My first suppressor was a Griffin Bushwhacker 36 that came with a Plan A taper mount. So I bought a couple plan A muzzle devices not really knowing that there were many other mounting options out there. I am now married to Plan A because it would cost me a tisha amount of cash to swap out muzzle devices and HUB mounts.

I now have several suppressors from several companies...all HUB compatible and with Plan A attachments.

2) Being a lefty, I wish I would have saved more and gone with flow through tech from the get go. I do add a gas busting charging handle, down vent BCG and Riflespeed adjustable gas block..but if I would have gone with a flow through/low back pressure I am sure the costs would be similar all in.

3) Now that we are in 2026 and there is no more tax stamp...I would consider a suppressor just another part of any build moving forward. Save some money on gas block, BCG and charging handles and just go flow through direct thread. But suppressors are just another part in the total build now. I do not see myself shooting unsuppressed often...if at all now.

4) Don't just chase the best price or sales. Do some research on what you want/need. Ex: I have an Exigent Defense Street Goblin and it is great at noise mitigation. It is bomb proof made of inconel. But it is heavy. So no big deal off a SBR but put that on a 16" or 18" and you get really front heavy. Street Goblin is perfect for the 10.5 rifle it lives on with an FRT trigger but would not be my first choice for a hunting rig or something that I would be hiking around with.

5) Buy suppressors that are full auto rated with no barrel length restrictions. FRTs and SBRs are fun!

First 4473 can picked up today: Apparition Instruments 3CM.

Modular 30 cal can designed specifically for the 300blk cartridge and the MCX host.

Sorry for a glut of pictures, but wanted to show off the two ways to run the can both with the short handguard and the thicker SD handguard.

Only 18" long with the stock folded (MCX can fire with stock folded) and just the base module.

same size as an unsuppressed 10.5" AR.

I haven't shot it yet, don't have time today. Hopefully tomorrow.

If understanding correctly that gun is in .300 BO correct or no?
Very nice.
Will you be able to shoot subsonic rounds?
Also educate me on the can being specifically made for .300 BO. Would it work as well you think for a .300 Whisper?
Thanks.

I've missed a whole page but have y'all discussed the ability to put a 22 or 7mm, etc front cap on many .30 cal cans to improve nose reduction when shooting smaller caliber cartridges through them?

You can change the front cap on a can? Sounds incredibly dangerous....but useful.

Someone please elaborate.

Dangerous to the can if it's a welded one piece. Some cans have a threaded removable cap on the ends for disassembly and cleaning. You can buy/build different caps to change the caliber of the hole in the end.

That is what my original thought was with the Griffin Bushwhacker 36. It came with the 36 cap for 9mm, I bought the 30 end cap and it now lives on a 300BLK build. It does help a bit...I think!

As of today, yes you can. Federally you are clear. But state laws still apply. Here are some more details. https://allaboutlawyer.com/can-you-make-your-own-suppressor-without-atf-approval-2026/

Sico sells bravo front caps in 223 and up, and hansohn brothers sells some cheaper. Sico says which cans they are compatible with. Just didn't go bigger than the factory diameter and try to shoot that size bullet! Also check alignment using range rod when going smaller, your 223 may not clip with a .3 cap but with a .22 end cap it may, if you have concentricity issues. I got a 22 and had a machine shop drill it out to 26 (actually 21/64) for my 260

Yes, that's a Sig MCX. 5.5" 300blk.

Yes, subs and supers worked great today in both configurations.

The can was engineered and designed specifically for short 300blk MCX rifles. That has less to do with how quiet it is (although its decently quiet), and more with controlling early time flow rate to make sure there is enough back pressure to reliably operate the piston with both subs and supers, while also having high enough flow rate later on in the shot to send gas out the front of the suppressor instead of straight from the chamber into the shooters face and gas them out.

Just stumbling across this thread. I had been meaning to pick up a can before deer season but had been too lazy to go through the process. Then I assumed I was too late. So, I am thinking maybe I will head to Scheels this weekend and buy one.

Any suggestions on what they have available on their 30 Cals:

LINK: SCHEEELS

It's for a 7mm-08 rifle that is already threaded. Mainly used in a blind for deer or out of a vehicle for hogs, so not too worried about weight. The set up will be a little long with my current barrel but that's also ok for now. Don't need the top of the line, just want to have something to make it a little quieter since there are multiple hunters on the lease.

Or, if SCHEELS selection isn't good, what is the best place to get something quickly and easily?

Are the suppressors on that link in your price range?

You said you don't need anything crazy, but I'd go with the Thunderbeast if I could have it my way. Hard to beat the Scythe.

This is a good place to look and see what fits your desires: https://pewscience.com

I'm an Otter Creek labs Fan boy and they have smaller "K" size cans that might fight your need.

You referring to the Scheels in The Colony? If so, also check Riflegear about a mile down 121. They have a good selection of suppressors ready to go on a 4473. If you have some time you can also look at Grabagun. You purchase online and they can ship to their storefront on Coppell. I have used them several times for rifles, pistols and suppressors and they have great pricing.

What barrel length on your rifle? You might want to look at a over the barrel (OTB) suppressor if it works with your rig. Never used one but see lots of bolt action guys use OTB suppressors as the overall length is reduced a few inches.

I agree, those are higher end cans and more than you probably need. Where are you? Maybe try a different store (find out if they will do 4473 sales first) and see if they have a better selection of cheaper cans. I was looking at Tuna Cans several weeks ago. They look neat, are crazy customizable, and cheap! If weight wasn't a concern that definitely what I'd get as a "gateway can"

For those looking for interchangeable mounts for all kinds of muzzle devices, Area 419 has just about anything you could want to swap devices.

I currently have a 6GT and 22GT with their Hellfire Universal Adapter and I can swap out both my cans or Hellfire brakes between them.

https://www.area419.com/product/hellfire-universal-adapter/

They also have adapters that screw onto your can and that will screw right onto their universal adapter.

https://www.area419.com/product/hellfire_suppressor_mount/

Read thru the FAQ to see which model you want for your can.

Just understand there is a difference between their hellfire system and the sidewinder system.

+1 for RifleGear. Better pricing than Scheels and when I went to Scheels last week they still weren't doing 4473s. That might have changed.
Just bought mine at RifleGear yesterday and they still had a decent selection in stock! And the one I got was about $150 cheaper marked down than anywhere else including online.

"ATF has stated that items can be removed from the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record by emailing the NFA Division, but a removed item cannot be re-registered unless the Attorney General declares an amnesty period."

Anybody done this? I guess the main reason you would do it is to be able to transfer without form 4? Or to get it out of their records, if you believe they actually would

If they completely erased them from the records then they wouldn't know you were reregistering. They're full of **** if they say otherwise. I think removing them is a terrible idea since the political winds will change. They know you have them and will continue knowing no matter what.

Got an email yesterday from Silencer Shop that they are now doing suppressor trade-ins. If you have an old suppressor that is just sitting around you can trade-in for Silencer Shop store credit.

I am going through the process now to see what my 1st gen Recce5 will get. I'm sure they low-ball but might be worth it to trade-in to a newer suppressor that has the new reduced blowback and new materials.

They absolutely will.

But that's also part of why I think everyone should go ahead and buy one on a 4473. I did.

The more people realize how full of crap hollywood and congress is about suppressors being magic assassin tools that can't be heard from across the room, the more people may start to understand how stupid many of our gun laws are.

We have made huge strides in restoring gun rights over the last 40 years. Even the pendulum swings the other way like the Federal AWB just made them more popular and in demand, not less.

Our goal should be for every gun owner to own a 4473 suppressor before those winds shift. Make them so ubiquitous and prevalent that no one is willing to spend the political capital required to force any kind of attempted confiscation.

Remember when Texas didn't even issue CHLs?
