Bad Idea. They will possibly spread the screwworm into feed yards and further.
The only beef we should import from south of our border is frozen beef. The packers can kill and package down there or buy frozen carcasses.

I guess I've not been to that many feedyards, but how many of them have animals walking around with open wounds? Then how many of them don't check their animals every day and then not treat a sick or infected animal?

Not sure, not my end of the business thank God. But why take a chance importing live animals from a third world country possibly infected with NWS? I don't trust their inspections, quarantine efforts, or anything else in Mexico.
Why take the chance? Should we further threaten our wildlife and livestock just to lower beef prices 10 or 20 percent?

I'm sure one way of thinking is that it allows US inspectors to have more control over animals crossing.

There will always be illegal imports but I think USDA believes this allows better monitoring.

From the USDA site: USDA press release
USDA proposes a phased reopening of Southern ports to livestock trade, contingent upon satisfactory progress on priority Action Plan milestones.
  • Sonora and Chihuahua are identified as the lowest-risk Mexican states for New World screwworm due to their strong, well-established inspection programs and their geographic distance from southern Mexico, where most cases are concentrated.
  • On August 24, 2026, USDA will reopen the Douglas, AZ, port, which borders Sonora, to livestock trade. The closest active case to the Douglas, AZ, port is ~325 miles detected on July 22, 2026. After evaluating the success of the initial reopening and potential impacts or risk assessment changes, APHIS will then consider reopening the Santa Teresa, NM, and Columbus, NM, ports to live cattle, bison, and horses.
  • The reopening timeline will remain flexible and may be adjusted based on Mexico's progress in meeting Action Plan milestones and addressing critical issues.
  • The opening of ports may be paused if USDA identifies increased risk in Sonora or Chihuahua via post-opening audits or other observations/information.

The Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas recent statement is pretty damning against Mexico and the cartels.

Glad ICA is reporting this Mexican corruption and its impact on Texas/ US animals.

Why is our Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association not taking this same position?

At 1pm today we are touring our ranch in Webb county with the state biologist. Will be Interesting to pick their brain and see what they are saying and thinking.

Is it strange that there are not any fly trap detections? Is this an expected thing, or are there just not many traps?

Just curious

It is a bit strange. As far as I know, the fly traps were only deployed along the border, not further inland. Confirmed cases (with the exception being deep S. TX /Roma area) have all been 50-100 miles or more away from the Rio. Coincidence? Conspiracy? Who knows. But certainly interesting to think about.

Just not many screwworm flies.

Tick riders suggested that this particular variety of fly is not as attracted to traps which I think are pheromone baited, as previous ones were.
