That was my question as well. That is where we typically sell goats and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a goat that was brought in for sale from somewhere down south closer to the other recent cases.
We should be furious that both the state and federal government did not act sooner. Today, Trump appoints A&M Regent Bellinger to head the response. Abbot gives an Executive Order last week ordering every available resource to give a full court press to attack NWS. USAID was gutted and cut monitoring and tracking of the fly throughout South American countries. A new sterile fly facility started construction in Edinburg. Won't be online till 2027.

Drastic measures may have to be implemented. It is now in counties not close to each other. Have to stop movement.
Stop rodeos? Jackpot stock shows? Auctions?

Chatted via text with the game warden (who was backed up by their health specialist) about the deer I posted above. Their belief is that it is not likely to be NWS at this time based on the timeline (I was able to find pictures back to at least a month ago). But they want us to keep a close eye on it and try to get a better look via binos if we get the chance to make sure it doesn't become infected.

Does anyone on this thread or have connections with someone that has legitimate pictures of deer that are infected? Would be nice to have something for reference when checking out my 150-200 pics a day. My luck, the aoudad will be the only thing they don't infect…

Has nothing to do with USAID cuts. They were past Panama and well into Mexico during Biden administration. They should have started building the fly production facilities then, but that didn't start until last year after Trump took office.

Big ranches out here do have multiple hands, but not enough to gather really big pastures without hiring day help. Not nearly as expensive as losing cattle.
Don't disagree but finding all of them in a 5k acre pasture with canyons and brush just isn't likely, and those ol girls learn to hide out after being gathered a few time.

I learned a long time ago that game wardens don't necessarily make the best biologists. Personally I'd forward the pics to your Comal Co. biologist and go from there.

Sorry, my mistake in saying game warden, I was talking to the main biologist for Comal county listed on the TPWD website, and I believe she was consulting their animal health specialist as well.

Not in Texas but a neighbor state. Yes, ideally doing the checking multiple times a week or more realistically a month is better than losing cattle. But, trying to find thousands of head in our neck of the woods in canyons, brush, trees, etc. spread over 10k, 20k, 30k, acres, etc. just isn't feasible with the manpower (or lack thereof). add in the wildlife and you've got a nightmare.

Another DVM friend from that area with knowledge of the case said the reports the dog had been to Mexico are incorrect. Concerning if true.
Thanks for the info sir......I bet it was, or is, an internet version of a "telephone" interpretation. Dog is prolly from NM and in sensationalist conversation the "New" part got dropped.

Vets on the board I've got a question. I've got a dart gun I've used quite a bit. I'm wondering, since with wildlife you frequently get one shot at an animal. If you spotted a suspected infection on an animal, would you dart it with a parasitic or antibiotic, or can you combine the two in one dart?
Combining is not wise because of compatibility issues (potentially) as well as the volume needed. Also with darting you can theoretically create a big enough wound to allow new infestation if the drug isn't delivered completely
