There's enough of them in SW Texas and far West Texas to have a season on them with strict quotas by county. Val Verde/Crockett/Terrell counties have healthy populations.

Awesome to see them coming back on the other side of the state. Hopefully they can carve out little areas like they have in SW Texas and thrive.

I've seen some pics of one living in Camp Wood. Only a matter of time before they head a few miles east and we see one at the ranch.

Where do yall ranch? They are sighted in Kinney Co., Edwards Co., Northwestern Uvalde County fairly regularly, but not as often as the other places I mentioned.

My dad was the Ag teacher in Brackettville for about 15 years and he saw multiple a year dead on Hwy 90 between Del Rio and Brackettville while driving to work.

Hunting buddy encountered one while he was field dressing a deer kill along the Cass Marion county line. About 10 years ago. Did not attack or act in any way threatening.

Not my ranch, just deer lease I've been on for 2+ decades. Right by Garner but west of 83.

You won't need a season on them. Poachers will soon decimate the populations again.

We have property in Rusk county and one of our neighbors less than 5 miles away had this guy on his game camera last July. I didn't read the full OP, just now noticing the reference to last July. Maybe the same bear!

"Don't be surprised if you see him in either Anderson, Cherokee or even the NE portion of Houston County," the department said on Thursday.

From the article…

A solitary black bear roaming the Neches River corridor in Anderson and Cherokee counties has become a local celebrity in East Texas, drawing public fascination after lingering in the area for nearly 10 months.

The bear, estimated to weigh at least 200 pounds and stand about three feet tall at the shoulder, arrived around July 15 of last year. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) district wildlife biologist Rueben Gay, who oversees Cherokee, Houston, and Rusk counties, has tracked it through public reports and photos.

"We just ain't never had one stay this long and want to live here," Gay said, Audacy reported.

Young male black bears occasionally pass through East Texas from neighboring states, but this one has settled in the hardwood bottomland along the Neches River between Highways 79, 84, and 294.
