Yup. It's great. Probably one of the top 5 best places to go for Spring Break to miss the crowds and catch quality POW.

So I misspoke. Was looking at flying into Spokane. Curious about drive to sandpoint from there. Guess that eliminates the pass you referenced. Not sure what I saw saying sandpoint was one of the better locations to view lights.
Northern lights and skiing.

Alyeska would like a word. You're getting on a plane anyways. Just stay on it for another 2 hours.

I know the question on SB crowds and skiing has already been raised so I'll give you gals and guys my top 5 Canadian Resorts to miss SB crowds but still catch good snow ranked in no specific order:

Revelstoke/Kicking Horse/Silverstar/Big White/Powder King.

Again - this is to MISS SB crowds (hence w no Whistler or Ski3 Alberta).

You'll be flying into either Revelstoke, Kelona, or Dawson for Powder King.

I'm not sure how much but this is about as good of a Thanksgiving snow dump that I can remember. Should set up a good start for the season. The pic is from my ring doorbell cam in Steamboat.

Kind of wish I was doing Thanksgiving in Steamboat this year. Hard to get great skiing in November. Plus it would just be locals. Nobody schedules a ski vacation for November.

Good news is alot of early season snow. Rare to catch a Nov storm that moves enough to open the trees. Bad news is with lows in the teens and the highs next week in the low 40s with full sun expected for 10 days, it's going to be a ice castle come the turn of next week. Especially with so little open. Yesterday through Sunday will hold out well. Next week it's back to the seasonal norm. Most hills are still short staffed so you won't see much more terrain open even with this snow which is brutal because your chairing over untouched pow that are closed and a season Long time out if you drop the rope.

Big dumps are always welcome but they are alot more fun when more than 300 acres is open.

Also, when we get hit this early with heavy snow it's usually a bad omen for Spring skiing. When the faucet open s in Oct/Nov it usually cuts mid/late feb. Usually, The best seasons are those where the first big rollers hit Mid December and contine through New Years then push back in late Jan and then roll into Presidents Day with a week or two space before march hits wet and heavy.

Don't tell me that, we just threw down hard on Spring Break for this upcoming year.

We've had great snow, whether christmas, february, or spring, every year we've been up in CO for as far back as I can remember, gotta keep the good juju going.

Even when the faucet turns off, if it's a big dump year, the base usually has a place to chill out. The advantage of these early deep snows is they cool off the ground early setting up the later season far better. It's better to get a base down early that they can suppliment w man made vs having to set the base w man made. It a HUGE difference. The worst years are those with big snow but nothing early and warmer night time temps. On those years, the hill doesnt breath well and even when you get a good snow, its gone by the afternoon. On those years the 2-4 inch days don't build up the base, they just tread water at the same depth.

The year COVD hit we had some great Oct/Nov dumps and good systems through Feb then NOTHING in march. It wasn't a deal breaker though because the hill had enough base to make it without an issue. You couldnt go into the trees much but you werent on rocks or brown patch on the groomers.

My spidy sense tells me this season is going to be a 2022/23 esq season. I don't know why, but I have an inkling the week between Christmas and New Years will be huge. I don't know why it feels that way but I've been here 39 seasons (part time this year) and it just has that vibe. Almost every year we get heavy on Thanksgiving, we get blasted the 24/25/26th of December - 7/8/9th of Jan and then another 30-40 inch roller set before or just around Presidents Day.

We usually get the most March Snow on El Niño Years. Those are usually the ones that start slow and then either stay dry or slam March and April. We get better consistent season Long Snow in la niña.

We Will see how well this post ages this season but if I wasnt a lol poor, I'd be betting on a solid solid season. The Northern Rockies should have an especially superb season. We won't make it out much to CO this season. We're here now and we will be back for Christmas. Then were planning on heading to Canada for the entire month of Feb for little bear to work and keep her certs and to try and catch the tiger by the tail. Fingers crossed.

BC - I think I'm going to look at picking up a pairo of powder skis this year. I'm cheap, so will probably be looking for something 1-2 years old. What would you recommend?

Currently skiing on Kendo 170s.

Any good deals coming out on a helmet and ski equipment bag (airline friendly)? Suggestions welcome.

My son bought skis/boots and figured I would give him something for Christmas. He will probably only use 2-3 trips per year.

I got a dakine boot/helmet bag years ago off of amazon for a pretty reasonable price and it's held up quite well.

How wide ya looking to go? Faction Prodigy 3.0 would be way up on my list. It's a killer all mountain power cut. If you're wanting something wider w more flex id say the Bent Chetler 110s.

Both of those have a mid level price point new so you should be able to pickup a 1-2 year old demo for a solid deal. Probs will have better luck finding used Bents over Prodigys just because It's a more popular rental ski.

If you're on the Kendos you probs want to stay with something w less flex but less flex on powder can be alot of work.

Another option at a higher price point would be the Black Crows Atris. And another option that rides similar to the Kendos but a wider waist would be the Faction Mana 3.0.

The prodigy and mana are going to have a higher speed limit than the Bents. The Bents love to float but don't like to speed. The chatter hard if you straight line.

I was thinking something under 110, but looks like I can get the Mana 3X for $335 on Expert Voice. They also have the Prodigy 3 at $345. Which one of those would you go with, and 172 or 178?

Would just need to find some bindings to put on them.
Bayou City

You'll get more use out of the Prodigy 3.0 IMO because you can take them out on groomers, on 6 inch POW and in 18 inch POW. The Mana 3.0s will feel clunky in anything that's less than 6-8 inches. The P3.0 also play through the trees easier as they arc turn is more favorable for the side cut. They are a 106 vs the 112 mana 3.0s. Id grab the 172's.

DB Bag is great. Dakine is another great choice.

I spent too much time researching this this fall and bought last year's model of evo's deluxe ski bag.

https://www.evo.com/ski-bags/evo-deluxe-snow-roller-bag-24

It's got some of the features of a higher end bag (internal straps and good built in storage) at a lesser price point.

Evo also has a good price on the dB bag right now.

https://www.evo.com/ski-bags/db-equipment-snow-roller

I'd probably buy this dakine boot bag

https://www.evo.com/boot-bags/dakine-pack-50l

I bought this boot bag last year based on someone rec on here. Happy with it. Nice price point.

Guess I didn't realize that they did boot bags as well but that makes sense. I've also had a ******bag for my skis and have made multiple trips with them and it's been great as well.

They just dropped the boot bag swag last year. I have a couple of friends that have them and absolutely love them. They like the fact that the outer liner is thicker than the normal Surefoot free bag. Nice on days where you have to keep your boots in the car but don't want to have them turn into ice cubes. They also have a nice zipable triple fleece lined pocket on the top for googles lens and gloves. That way you can reverse your helmet and fit it in with the boots but not have to have your goggles tucked inside your helmet to protect them from bumps and scratches.

Next time I need a new boot bag, it's probs gonna be my choice. I can't count the number of lenses I have that have a fat ratchet scratch across them from the lens falling out of my helmet duribg travel and ending up squished between the side wall of the bag and my boots.

Smith Vantage or POC Fornix or Calyx are my favs.

What ever you get make sure it has MIPS.

My advice, go heated with boot bags. Kulkea is what my daughter and wife have. Starting warm for them sets a tone for the day.

But also, they get hot enough to mold cork for Zips. So can double for home adjustments.
