Cheapest PSA Dagger you can get when they're on sale. At a minimum keep it in a console vault, but not one with the rotary lock.

If you have a truck with a console, I strongly recommend installing a safe in the console. Won't stop someone who steals the vehicle and has time to disassemble, but it will stop a smash & grab thief.

I lost a SIG 226 years ago to a thief at DFW airport.

Since I have the safe, I keep a SIG 229 with Surefire light.

Your vehicle is not a secure holster. So first get a secure vault in the vehicle..
Then you realize it won't be easily accessible....so accept that.
I carry constantly. IWB Springfield HDS 45....in the car....on the couch....dinner table whatever. I don't notice it anymore.

I know someone who had their firearm stolen out of their vehicle and used in a crime on someone they love. Don't be that guy.

Are you asking for handgun recommendations in general? Or for handgun recommendations specifically for a vehicle? Because anything you'd carry or have in your home will also work in a vehicle (recommend a safe as others have mentioned).

In general, go to a gun range that does rentals and ask to try some of the more popular firearms. I like Glocks and would recommend a G19 or G17, but there are lots of good options out there. Currently considering a Sig 365 for my wife.

Also, get training. I recommend Strategic Weapons Academy. Been taking classes there for years.

Whatever you can also carry on you or at least can fit in a vehicle safe.

If you are not carrying and have normal size hands get something with at least the capacity of a G19. Remember half of the day it is dark so night sights or red dot are nice to have

I've had trucks broken into three times. First was in Houston and just in console. Miraculously, it was recovered in Arizona and got it back about 6 years later.

My current truck has a Console Vault. Great product but do not buy with the combo lock. It sticks up high and channel locks make short order. Lost a Glock in San Antonio.

Console Vault sent me a replacement barrel key lock. It was broken into, also in San Antonio. Apparently they just looked at the lock and moved on. Nothing is impervious though. I actually built a false bottom into the console. They would have to get passed barrel key lock, then realize there is a false bottom. I keep a pistol in there but always have one on my person. Only time it goes into the console is the rare doctor appointment where they post 30.06 or schools.

The schools drive me crazy. I do Lions Club vision screening at all the local elementary schools. They are all prominently posted 30.06 and 30.07. So with the history of school shootings and other gun free zones, they are preventing carry by law abiding citizens who have been background checked. But I'm sure anyone with ill intent will comply with their signs too.

I'm not sure I understand the real benefits of a dedicated "vehicle gun." As was stated already, it just gives would-be thieves something else to steal. Since obviously the gun in your vehicle is of no use to you when you're away from your vehicle, why not just rely on your normal carry handgun? Whether in the vehicle or out, it goes with you.

I can see maybe rigging up a holster of some sort maybe under the dash or on the console to transfer your carry pistol into for greater comfort and accessibility while you're sitting in the vehicle seat. Or…I can see needing a safe or other secure storage for your handgun while your vehicle is in the parking lot if you're carrying to and from work and your workplace won't allow you to bring your weapon inside the building. Otherwise, why leave it in the vehicle instead of taking it with you?

Not saying I break the law......

But 95% of the time I see a 30.06 it is not valid signage as it is not at every door....
Additionally.... I feel their is a greater chance of getting mugged to or from than getting checked.... or a greater chance of losing it to a car break in specialist than getting checked.

Not saying I do and not saying I don't but I don't leave handguns in the car for 30.06..... I'm allegedly willing to face the penalty rather than leave it in the car.... in theory. Allegedly.

....even at schools.

Think about this guy's. It's like providing arms to terrorists. It's just a bad practice in all scenarios and really no justification. THIS IS EXACTLY HOW CRIMINALS GET THEIR GUNS. ALL OF THEIR GUNS.

Is it worth it? Just dont.

All of us have had our vehicles broken into or know someone who has......and some multiple times. The ONLY reason they break into vehicles is looking for guns. It's bad bull yall.

Personally, I do not believe in "truck gun". There is only "the weapon I carry on me". I too have had a truck broken into but for me it's a little more than that.

First, yes, I carry my weapon just about everywhere, signage be damned. That said, I don't go to airports, or bars, schools….stuff like that. That's not because I care about the law it's just because I don't have cause to go so bear that in mind when I say "I carry everywhere"….its not really.

Most folks don't make the decision to carry a weapon for grins. Maybe they live in the ghetto. Maybe not. Either way, they have a desire to protect themselves. With that in mind, do you really want the cheapest piece of **** you can find? I don't. I want the best I can afford and practice with and doesn't jam. Because those are usually pricey, I don't leave it in the truck, which is why I opt to carry almost everywhere.

Moreover, even if I had a cheap piece of ****, it's MY cheap piece of **** and I don't want some bozo stealing it and using it for crime or worse.

I say either carry the weapon on you at all times, or leave it at home.

SGREM nailed it.

This. As someone who made the stupid mistake of leaving one in my truck (wasn't a regular practice but occasionally I'd forget) and having it stolen it is a horrible feeling knowing it's now in the hands of thugs.

Having to tell the cop who took my report was a sick feeling. I'm sure he wanted to say "thanks a lot, ahole".

I have also made the mistake of leaving a pistol in a locked truck. Criminals don't care about gun laws and obviously probably property rights.

Sorry I'm no help there. I don't leave it in the vehicle ever.

But I've heard good things about the Liberty HD-90.

If you are worried about car jacking, a Judge is an easy enough gun to use. If you load it with .410 buckshot shells and are at close range (within 5-7 yards), just point and shoot. Could significantly ruin a carjacker's day.

Oh I don't like keeping a gun in a vehicle. I think its a terrible idea. I was just giving examples of cheaper guns if someone wants to keep one there. It will get taken more than likely.

Nobody considers Denton, TX to be "Harlem" .... yet.

But can't tell you how many reports I took of guns stolen out of vehicles. Happens all the damn time.

I understand the rationale for not leaving a firearm in a car, so I am looking for suggestions. I travel on average once a month. I use two different airports primarily, and they both require me to transit some pretty sketchy areas. Additionally, one of the airports is several hours away.

I don't have much interest in traveling to these airports without carrying. I don't really have anyone to take me to the airport and keep custody of my firearm until I return, and as far as I know, there is no place to check my firearm at the airport. So, leaving it in the car while I am gone seems like the best option.

Any other suggestions?

I bought a Taurus G2C. Has been in my truck console almost 2 years. No break ins (knock on wood)
