Getting up at 4 in the morning
Putting on the camo and waders and cold weather gear
Getting out to the pond and putting out the decoys
Sitting patiently while it is pitch dark
Then hearing a whoosh sound and then ssssssssssss as the ducks hit the water!!

Same here, especially in the last hour of the day. Hearing the grass rip as they're grazing, tails swishing, cow is content.
Little calves bumping around their mama's bag while she's grazing or just butting heads.
Absolutely a satisfying experience.

I agree with all of this. I will also add that a field full of round bales makes me very happy. Just knowing that we have a field baled is so satisfying.

- Being able to get outta bed at night without help.
- Watching a group of ducks making that last bank
- watching a good dog work
- sitting in a stand in south Texas in mid-December
- a warm campfire & a hot toddy
- trout popping under the pier lights
- linebackers making tackles
- my Louisiana girlfriend saying "Come see"

Beautiful Texas sunset that reaches from West to East.
Hearing a grandchild call my name or reach for my hand.
Seeing my garden come to life.
Hearing church bells chime.
Sitting with my wife of 53 years on the back porch.

Labor Day weekend (football and dove season)

The sound of a herd of cows quietly munching hay/alfalfa in a feed bunk. The smell of a tack room full of saddles, but only after the saddle blankets have aired out. The sound of spur rowels in the pre dawn darkness waiting for the remuda. The blended smell of coffee, tortillas, cigarette smoke, bacon and eggs in the bunkhouse kitchen.

The crisp fall mornings in the San Juans of Colorado when the aspens are orange/gold and there's a smell of camp fire smoke in the air and it's time to gather the cows off the forest pastures. Elk bugling.

Most won't remember this, but the smell of a new, unwashed denim Levi's jacket or jeans. Especially in a western store full of boots, belts, and fresh denim.

Seeing my 4 year old granddaughter's face when I pick her up from school. We only live a few miles apart and I usually pick her and her sister up once a week, but each time when she sees me that smile splits her face and she sprints to me and leaps into my arms as if she hasn't seen me in months.

Finishing a tailgate cook and sitting with a cold beer (hot weather) or bourbon (cold weather) and watching everyone enjoy what you just cooked.

Watching my kid be able to flycast and catch a big rainbow.

Me and my kid catching whites off the dock.

Shooting the first buck off land my family has been on for 120 years.

Smell of broken ground a week after a rain.

First time I heard my 2 year old granddaughter call me Opa.

And then every time since then

The smell just before a spring rain.

Watching and listening to a good ol' Central Texas thunderstorm.

The smell in an old school meat market.

Cold beer after mowing the grass on a hot summer day.

That my wife finally agrees in principle to leave the big city and find some land.

Fightin' Texas Aggie Baseball.

My son getting accepted to be a Fightin' Texas Aggie.

Taking my son on his first pheasant hunt and him getting to witness our first group of birds flush like a large covey of quail.

Anytime I get to go fly fish the backcountry with my wife and son.

The first time (and every time thereafter) your newborn child squeezes his little hand around your finger.

Watching same son land more and bigger fish than you for the first time.

Standing in the pre-dawn flooded woods with the glow of the twilight through the trees. Seeing the jet-like silhouettes of birds coming through the trees and hearing that splash hit the water.

The sound, smell, and feel when I crank my Daddy's 1970 model 826 IH. It's one of the things that brings his memory sweeping back over me, almost like he is there.

The assurance that, because of Christ offering up himself on that cross some 2000 years ago, what I get and what I deserve are far separate ends.
