Last Oct several guys fished in Rockport for bull reds and snapper. Did really well.

We are looking at doing the same this fall. Two guys fly fish and others chunk bait.

I'm looking at Port Mansfield as a different option.

Curious thoughts on fishing in Mansfield vs rockport.

Fly fishing looks a a little better but idk for sure

Wade fishing on the flats for tailing reds in Port Mansfield is some of the best fishing of all time, imo. Conditions have to be perfect. It's hard enough with a conventional rod, but if you get in position to stalk a redfish on the flats with a fly rod thats probably some of the best fishing you are ever gonna get. Max amount of skill required. Its the equivalent of bowhunting but fishing.

If y'all are just fishing and don't care about being a little more remote, Mansfield all the way. Been a few years since I fished Rockport but it was crowded.

I have a place in Rockport and I try not to fish weekends anymore, it's just so crowded now. I'd vote Mansfield unless you are looking for more social activities and/or can go during the week.

Some good advice above! I have been fishing Mansfield at least once a year since 1988 and even on bad years it is always a good time. We usually go late Sept - early Oct. Once the water temperature falls below 70, as someone said above, it can be magical! I have caught may personal best Redfish, Trout, Jack, Snapper and Shark down there. And have broken my own records many times!

No place in Texas like it it my opinion.

I've been fishing both for 25+ years. I'll put it like this…EVERYONE that fishes a Rockport tournament heads south. Starting at about 5 miles south of Marker 37 and extending to Greens Island (mouth of the Arroyo Colorado) is where the best fishing is located. Yes, you can catch good fish around Rockport and surrounding areas.

I have a place in Rockport and when I'm serious I tow to Marker 37 on Padre Island and head south.

During the week good guides can put you on fish around Rockport. The best can put you on good fish. If they have an air drive, you can score reds in the back lakes up against the island.

Reds on fly? Mansfield. Book the guide NOW! I fish my own boat 90% of the time. Ernest Cisneros is a great reds guide and the only guide I've fished with for reds down there. There are plenty others.

State snapper is good at Mansfield. 18 miles north of the Mansfield jetties in shallow water. You can chum them to the boat and catch them on flies.

Mansfield is sparse. Very few places to eat. Blues chill and grill is good. Pelican is a good burger meal. My crew always cooks when we go down. Sweet Gregory P's has good breakfast tacos. Windjammer is good enough.

If you want to save money, stay at sunset house. Clean rooms, cold ac. Otherwise find a nice Vrbo or stay at Pelican Point condos (get one that has been remodeled).

Harbor Bait & Tackle has tackle, basics needs and ice.

One last thing about PM. When the wind is down midweek you can find big redfish schools just south of the east cut ( the channel from PM to the jetties) pushing a wake and hammering topwaters.

Pics are last August. 6 fish over 25 plus a disastrously handsome pic of me lol.

When you go to Harbor Bait & Tackle, tell Carrie that Rambo sent you and she will take good care of you!

I rent from Vic's rentals every year and have never been disappointed. Been in the same house on the Port for the last four years.

Mansfield. I've been fishing Mansfield for years and its hard to beat.

It can be sparse on food. The Pelican did burn down. When I was there in April, they were starting to rebuild. The little joint at POCO Bait has decent food. Raymondville is 20 miles away in a pinch.

I think I'll stick with Rockport but do a separate trip to port Mansfield soon
