When it comes to recognizable engine sounds, there is only one king

Have to agree, ain't nothing like the sound of a radial. Don't even have to look up to recognize the sound of a radial if I hear one fly over.

On a somewhat more personal basis, had a methanol-burning monster (~600 hp) of a V-8 in one of my dirt modifieds. The engine rules in that class are somewhat, may we say, generous.

The lope at idle was great, but to be able to hear that instantaneous "whaap whapp" when cycling the carb.... goosebumps!

I remember the Washington game in '87. The flyover had a P51, a Jap zero and a couple of others a non-aviator me couldn't identify. By far the loudest thing ever in Kyle field. I was on third deck looking straight into the cock pit at the pilot as the flew by through the field. That was MUCH louder than the Apache I also had the pleasure of viewing that did maneuvers over the south end scoreboard.

Neat side note:

The band (and crowd noise) was recorded live and put on the Traditions II album put out by the band. They had mics set up in or very near the band. When the planes flew over, they drowned out the band and everything else. I later bought the CD and when I heard the planes - I thought - "Hey, I was at that game!!" Still have the CD and enjoy the memories.

To continue with this thread:

We had one of these to shred brush with on the ranch. A real beast!

It had a "grille guard" and huge bumper on the front. If you could push it over, the Brush Hog shredder would chew it up. No flats - it had 36 ply airplane tires on the front and "double" or wrapped rear tires. (One cleat tire mounted on the rim and another with the bead and part of the sidewall cut out "wrapped" around the one on the rim.)

I swear the ground would shake when you first started that diesel!
I’ve seen them play since way back when,
And they’ve always had the grit;
I’ve seen ‘em lose and I’ve seen ‘em win,
But I’ve never seen ‘em quit.

Bad ass. These things have been known to have some big horsepower. I've seen a bunch with Chevy big block 502s on them which is an engine I've always wanted to own in something.

What engine is on yours?

If it was 2018 to 2020, could have been her. In about 2013, she flew a T-38 low level over a river in Alabama. Fisherman stood up and leaned back to watch her go over. And leaned back. And leaned back and splash!

Love spending time on the boat with the kids and the grandkids
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I hate to say what the engine specs are as it has been too long. The engine came out of the Houston area. It is an aluminum block Chevy. "Conrad racing" or something like that was building race car engines for the Xfinity series or one of the others below the Cup series.

I do remember the dyno and it was 505hp.

Got to take a ride in the B-17 named Nine-0-Nine about 10 years or so ago.

Keeping it specific to the engines (lots of other coolness about the ride), they had the Navigator area hatch open and the sound, the beautiful drone of those 4 radial engines w/props! I am tall enough that I tip-toed high enough to stick my head out of the hatch and listen, see, and smell them up close. Never will forget it.

Nine -0-Nine crashed on landing a few years back and was destroyed.
"Green" is the new RED.

Big Boy is the loudest thing I've ever heard from about 50'. The noise and pressure just deafening and pounding. Scared the bejeezus out of my kid.

844 is louder with the same load if you can believe it.

They both have 300psi boilers.

4014 has four 24in cylinders with a 32in stroke on 68in drivers

844 has two 25in cylinders with a 32in stroke on 80in drivers

This makes the cylinder pressure on 844 a lot higher for the same tractive effort when the valve gear moves to exhaust. It's quite deafening when the cylinder cocks open.

844 isn't nearly as capable on the high end of the drawbar, and 4014 would lose a level grade race.

Heck. You can feel the difference in weight just standing next to them.

I thought you had me beat, but I guess I'm at 54 cylinders now. Like guns, I have a big problem selling cars after I've bought them and seem to be "collecting" them in pairs

Been racing outboards since the 1980's. Nothing like " flying" a V-pad performance boat at 90 plus with 6" of hull in the water.
The wife and I restored a numbers matching 1970 GTO Judge with a Ram Air III 400 about 16 years ago. There still is nothing like a high octane av- gas eating big block's sound.
I pity our younger generation that never got to experience the muscle car era. Now some say how much " fun" a Tesla is. They have no idea .
I cut my teeth on a V8 1967 Mustang (with Pony Interior) in High School when everyone else was driving some 80s oldsmoibile crap. I pity that younger generation too my friend! Slamming that pedal to the floor and popping that clutch would almost leave that pony standing on it's end!!! What a rush!

I miss it, so I try to hammer my V8 chevy silverado now, but the 10 speed transmission makes that first launch less than super. It does get 20MPG at 90MPH and under 20,000 RPMs, so I guess you get something back on it.

Not sure why, but I have always loved the sound of a Poppin' Johnny. Those old natural gas engine pump jacks are comforting to me, it reminds me of riding around checking cows with my grandfather as a child.

It was August if 2020 and they raged over us for 45-60 seconds.

Had a true f15 flyover on hole 1 in Klamath Falls years ago. It was the exact moment I was about to hit. My pilot brother in law set it up unbeknown to me. Under 1000ft as I was stepping up to my shot. Was awesome. Pilot was a friend of mine too!

I've never been a fan of planes other than planes w business class before my very own f15 flyover.

I miss driving one of these and the sounds that go with it. Nothing like straight headers off a SBC. Unfortunately even at 34 my ears are shot and this was one of my last race weekends. Make your kids wear hearing protection in whatever they do!

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is "Poppin' Johhny" refers to a John Deere tractor.

The good news is, you now have a whole "hit miss engine" Google video search to make.

Seconded.

If it's loud enough, the thrill is the whole body feeling of the pressure waves. Not the excruciating sound in your ears.

Daughter got to stand by the runway in Qatar as a B-1 took off. She said the same, that you felt it more than heard it.

Ford's SVT has created some monsters. I love the sound of the 662hp 5.8L Trinity supercharged V8 in the 2013-14 GT500 under full boost. The convertible is best for enjoying the 3rd gear symphony with the right foot flat on the floor from about 60-120MPH.

Lots of cool stuff in here! I enjoy the sound of a V8. My favorite V8 is the LS platform, but don't tell that to the Hemi I daily. I will say I've been overall impressed with the Hemi. Get's good mileage, doesn't sound bad, and it has plenty of power to tow. Considering an exhaust, I'm so picky on sound it'll be weeks of youtube clips

Fun thread, OP!

If we're counting only cylinders in engines attached to things in or on which you can ride, I'm sitting at 29, with 8 more being manufactured in Flint, Michigan (hopefully) this week.

I have way more things with just wheels than things with engines AND wheels! But they all require engines to enjoy.

I still remember the first time my dad took me to an NHRA event at Baytown 30 years ago. It's a sound (and smell) experience that a microphone just doesn't do justice.

Sad that bayotwn is closing - I've been lucky enough to go to a few events this year - it's going to leave a real gap in the enthusiast track market. I wouldn't be surprised if people just take it to the streets
