I'm considering getting an edger but I can't shake the feeling it's a complete waste of money.
Do use a weed eater to edge or an actual edger?

I have an ancient gas edger that makes great edges but I usually string trimmed the edges because it was more convenient.

I use a weed eater and think I'd be too lazy to weed eat and then go back and edge. But the classic edgers do a better job. Super clean looking. Especially on nice healthy st. Augustine
Edge and then come back with weed eater.
Weed eater, edgers are a waste of money unless you own a commercial landscaping company. Or you have thousands of feet to edge at your home.

I use a weed eater, but yesterday my line got cut and sucked up 3 separate times, which royally pissed me off. I think edger is way better.

Buddy of mine got an edger. I now borrow it every year and ream out the dirt to start the season. Then use a trimmer thereafter.
I was a freak about my lawn for awhile. I got a battery trimmer years ago so I could do mid week easy touchups. The head rotates to an edging position. After I started using the edger I never had to use the gas trimmer anymore. I can keep tighter lines with no effort.

I use a worx trimmer/edger to do edging. Makes for a cleaner look.
I had a lawn business as a young kid and purchased a dedicated edger. I had that edger for 25 years. When it was time for a new one, I didn't give it a second thought. I purchased another 4 wheel edging machine again.
Did weed eater only since cutting lawns as a teen. Switched 2 years ago and got the Stihl Edging attachment and use it all the time. It looks cleaner and I don't throw my weed eater across the lawn anymore bc the ****ing string breaks incessantly.

When I need to touch up the edge, an edger. Otherwise I use my weedeater.
I've got a weed eater that has a rotating shaft, so it turns into an edger. It's a Black & Decker. Wife gave it to me for our anniversary 7 years ago.
Stihl gas edger here. We've always seemed to find houses with lots of curb, and it's nice to have. Only use the canned ethanol free gas, change the air filter & plug every other year or so - it's been pretty easy to own.

I just use a weedeater that flips over to vertical and go slow. Makes a great line at the sidewalk.
I just use hedge trimmers. But only because I like to be careless when my neighbor isn't home, and drift over the property line and wack down whatever I feel like.

Ive lived on a corner lot for many years so I've got sidewalk and curb to edge. After 5-6 years of edging with a string trimmer, I finally bought a Stihl edger. That thing made a world of difference on my back and makes a cleaner cut. It also hangs on my wall next to the string trimmer. I highly recommend if you have a lot of edging to do.
I flip my weedeater upside down. Perfectly straight edge and way faster than an edger.

Echo PAS motor w/ the stick edger attachment. Nothing replaces the clean look from an edger.
I have a metal blade attachment that goes with my weedeater. I normally use typical string trimmer attachment but every other month or so I use the blade attachment that has a handy wheel guide to really square things up.
stihl edger here. Looks way better and I only touch it up about once a month. Especially on the st augustine the weed eater isn't as clean.

I use a BIC and a checkbook.
edger that matches all my other Ryobi equipment. Hangs on the wall, makes quick work of it. Using a weedeater turned over just burns that much more line whipping against the concrete.
I would recommend a bag of concrete for this job.
I have always used a stick edger, and that's what first comes to mind when think of an edger. Are most people talking about a walk behind, four-wheeled edger in this thread?
