What's y'all's thoughts on this? Have about 15k sq feet that needs grass. I was going to sod St. Augustine for 6k sq ft of it, but I just got quoted for hydroseeding Zoysia for $2500 for all 15k sq feet. I know the price is good and we are having sprinklers put in right before, but my concern is quality of the yard.

I expressed my concern of it growing splotchy like I've seen it on the side of the road, but the installer said that's usually done very cheaply and they can increase the seed count on the spray.

Cost is great and zoysia would be awesome to have, but would the quality be good? Anyone ever done this?

Picture is just one part of the yard we want done, but where we want it the best quality.

Hopefully you've got some more prep coming if you want that area to be a nice turf grass lawn.

Hydroseed can take and turn into a great lawn, it just takes a season or two and constant upkeep.

No shade issues, go Bermuda.

Just got done tilling today. Plan on bringing in some top soil to dress and level. Sprinklers are being installed soon as well.

I will have a problem with shade in a lot of areas that aren't in that picture, so Bermuda isn't an option.

You can have my Zoysia for frees... grows slows, tramples easy and drought resistant my arse...takes tons of water

Second palisades. Watered 4 times last summer. Stayed lush and green the entire time.

It goes dormant quicker in summer but doesn't die, just looks dead

It's this quoted above, versus a lush, newly sodded yard right away.

If you have a skidsteer/tractor and the appropriate attachment, roll sod could be a more cost effective option than pallets. The sod farm may even let you rent/use their attachment.

I'm totally fine with having Zoysia. We had palisade sod at our last place in Fort Worth and we loved it.

My question is, am I going to regret getting hydroseed? Or will it take off and do well?

Just an opinion, but zoysia is awful.

Planted some around the pool growing up.

30 years my Dad tried to get rid of it. Awful stuff.

Here's my take on Hydro seeding: Its better left for wild seed mixes, like wildflowers and wild grasses.

If all the conditions are good - the seed mix, the guy spreading the goop, the rain fall, your sprinklers - then yes, you should get good coverage.

BUT

What if you get a huge rain fall 5 or 10 days after hydroseeding? You just washed $6K of seed down hill. This is the biggest fear with any surface seeding.

Sod is pricey, but you get some peace of mind.

If you want to save the money and take the chance, give it a go. But is probably a good 2-3 week hold your breath period while the seeds take.

Have you checked to see what soil temp you need for germination? Most of what I've seen is 60's for good germination. Not sure where you are but most places, except for the coast, are not having night time temps above 60 on the regular.

Been in the landscape business in Central Texas for over 20 years and never heard of anyone trying to hydro seed zoysia. It's way too slow to establish & weeds will be a major factor as they will love the extra water you are giving the zoysia.

I'm never hydroseeding my main yard again. Just spring for the sod. It will never get as thick as you want and you will be fighting weeds forever.

Like mentioned above, git a big rain a week in that also caused problems. You can go with a flexterra type hydro seed to stop erosion problems but it still will never be as thick abd weedless as a sodded yard.

Hydro seed all you want in peripheral areas...

As Apache said, do not seed zoysia. First, it will take forever. Second, all the desirable varieties are hybrids and do not produce viable seed, so what you get from seed will not be one of the varieties you want.
If you want zoysia - sod it.
As jpb said - sod everything close to the house or that you want to use soon. You can hydroseed bermuda in peripheral areas if you have irrigation.
