Used the 300 Win Mag in South Africa and was quite impressed. More than adequate for Sable and zebra. It had one hell of a suppressor, and that helped.
I would choose 300 win mag for ammo availability. I have a couple weatherbys and if you leave you ammo at home you will almost be guaranteed SOL finding something on the road.
Both good rounds- I do think the 300 has more availability and selection. But maybe I think that because it is what I have, so I never look for the 7mm. I've only shot a 7mm a few times, and never at game. So I'm not super familiar with it.
But I've hunted all over North America with my 300 Win Mag for over 20 years. With the different size pills you can feed it, that gun will do just about anything you could want. Manageable recoil, but much of that depends on the setup you run.
My recommendation would be get a 300WM, and then spend your time agonizing over which scope to put on it.
Well, what're you wanting to use it for? I'm assuming hunting, but what kind?

I plan to use the rifle for elk hunting mostly and hopefully a moose someday. I currently have a Remington 700 in 300 win mag with a synthetic stock. I have a buddy selling a weatherby lazermark in 7mm mag that looks beautiful. I'm waiting for a response on if it's a weatherby round or Remington round. The point about ammo availability is a good one.
I went with the 7mag over 300win mag. I don't feel that the ammo selection is any worse, but that there is a narrower grain window for the 7mag vs the 300wm. However, I got it for an all around mountain rifle mainly for elk and muleys so not a huge deal for me as I just found a good round it liked that was readily available.
Back when I was doing research I thought there was maybe a slight ballistic advantage to the 7mag for factory ammo options (reloading I think the 300win really excels) but I'm sure someone way more knowledgeable on here will correct me.
300 Win Mag. Typically more accurate than 7 WM. Army used it as Sniper weapon as a M-24 based upon the Remington 700. It was Chris Kyles favorite cartridge and used it for most of his kills according to his book. His rifle used a 700 action, Macmillan stock and custom barrel.
In my opinion, the .300 Win Mag is the best all around big game caliber you can get. Ive had my Browning A-bolt for around 8 years now and taken muley, caribou, moose, brown bear, black bear, and piles of whitetail and pigs. Couldn't be happier with the performance across the board. It will definitely be my go-to rifle for most all of my big game hunts.
