It's really not that hard to call Ruffino's and order Prime brisket... lots of those on the Top 25 New Joints do just that...

But it's the attitude of the "old BCS residents" that think every BBQ plate should be the $10 that the old Aggie Special at Tom's cost should be carried on today. (Never mind that I was buying select brisket for $0.59/lb back in those days and it's at best $1.96/lb today...)

And if you want to look for an example, look at TheOC16 that sad Cooper's would be "more accessible and probably affordable than 1775..." even though Cooper's never uses Prime cuts ($1.96/lb v $2.99/lb (at best) on the open market...)

Agree. And it's a night and day difference. Then there's always the crowd complaining about prices but don't realize the costs associated w that quality meat.

Added more commentary...

P.S. I was cooking Costco Prime this weekend at my local cook-off...

Snow's uses Select. Personally I've never understood the obsession with Snow's (and I've given it PLENTY of tries having lived in Lexington).

You can get a really good brisket out of Select or Choice (there can be such a range of quality within each grade), but obviously your odds are much better with a higher ceiling and lower floor if you go Prime.

On Saturdays, 1775 has a huge effing pork steak with two very generous servings of sides for $12

Never tried the pork steak.

That's one of the things about 1775 - their sides are huge.

A couple people responded to my comment about 1775 being expensive in relation to Cooper's coming to town (which I don't even know if it's true or not). I'm not saying it's not a good value; they do give you those huge very tasty sides and cook prime brisket. It's a good value - I just don't like dropping $15 on lunch (since I eat out almost every day).

I don't mind spending that kind of money (and a lot more) on BBQ if it's for the experience. But I've already had the 1775 experience several times, and sure I will again. Just not part of my average lunch routine. Plus the main part of my comparison with Cooper's was the accessibility. Most people don't want to drive out to the river just for lunch. That would be a benefit Cooper's will have. Though as someone mentioned, if Kreuz' didn't make it here, I don't see how Cooper's will.

Coopers doesn't sell a chopped beef sandwich, drink and a side for $5 which is what the BCS townies want.

Just wait for the thread on the BCS board when it opens. I'm sure everyone will love the free beans, but will complain about the prices.

Just tried to go back to 1775, walked up to about 15 people in line and stood there for 20 minutes without moving and left. They've got to do something different and improve their efficiency. It's always sooo slowww.

ETA: ended up back in downtown Bryan at All the King's Men and had some great brisket and jalapeo cheddar sausage. Even felt inclined to have a glass of Blantons, they have over 100 bourbon/whiskey selections with some nice higher end stuff. Cool place.

Feges BBQ in the Shoppes food court at Greenway Plaza? Really??? I pass it several times a week and always just assumed it sucked bc there's hardly ever a line and it's an office building food court vendor. Surely they can't cook with pits right?

I went by there not long after they opened. It was pretty damn good, especially for basically being food court bbq
Just devoured a two meat plate of fatty brisket and pork ribs and am pretty blown away that this is "food court" bbq. They do a very good job. I'll try to spread the word in the office.

I really need to check them out.

Your first post about them got me curious and it mentioned something about the guy buying a big smoking rig so they must smoke off site. If his bbq is as good as advertised there's no what they're doing it right there.

Harlem Road is good. We lack for good bbq down in that area. I've only been once, but I was not surprised to see it on this list.
I live just a few minutes away but have never been. I never see anyone in the parking lot. Guess we'll have to try it.
Tried once about half before close and place was already locked up. Ive heard good things about it.
Are you joking? I've been twice and regretted each time - I haven't found someone that enjoys their BBQ. I'm convinced it's staying in business from sitting in that Amazon distribution center's shadow

If you want good BBQ prices then best deal in town is Martin's Place

#20 on the list no longer exist… unfortunate because it was a solid option

No clue why they closed down because it was always busy

But what about the good BBQ part? Martin's not so much. Dont get me wrong, i enjoy dining there but for nostalgic reasons, reminds me of my childhood and being with my grandfather eating there.

I'm sure there's more than one that no longer exists since we've bumped a 5 year old thread.

Kinda weird to pick a fight on someone's comment and bump a thread from 5 years ago, but it is interesting to see some of the responses and commentary from 2019. Several of these places made the next top 50 list that came out in 2021 and some didnt.

I remember it was outrageous back then when places were approaching 26-28 bucks a pound for brisket, and now many are well above 30.

1775 is hands down the best in the B/CS area, but if you're looking for the classic: sliced beef sandwich, bag of chips, and a drink for under $10, you'll be pretty mad. The food is excellent, but it aint cheap. Sadly thats many bbq restaurants now, bbq went from a cheap/value lunch to more expensive than some formal, sit-down restaurants.

Is that the weird ass place where the jackasses would try and make you buy more food than you wanted because it was "artsy"? If so, good.

I know John was the grandson of Louie and brother of Wayne who runs the business now. However, John was not part of the family business for some time. John basically went out on his own.

Sadly, John has since left this world. That dude could smoke some mean proteins despite his demons. He had a gift no doubt.

I live in Brenham, so I've had #5 - LJ's BBQ often, about 2-3 times a month. I think their brisket and mac & cheese are both incredible! I seldom ever get anything else, but the last time I had their ribs, it was very good as well. Their sausage isn't my favorite among the upper tier BBQ places, but thats ok with me, as I'm interested in the brisket, and nowadays I only ever order the brisket and M&C anyway. I think LJ's brisket holds its own with anyone's brisket I've tried so far among the celebrated BBQ joints.

I have land near Rockdale and used to go to Brett's and have chatted with him a few times.

I'm not really sure why he closed but last time I talked to him he had recently been elected mayor of Rockdale and got married. He also had a real job during the week in oil field services.

Soon after the last time I met him he announced they were closing. They did pop ups at a new bar in town and then had a set up across from tractor supply, but as far as I know they don't do any of that anymore.

I've heard LJs is actually better than Truth, but doesn't get the recognition for some reason.

I wouldn't call LJ's better than Truth, but it's a solid option if Truth's line is too long or you're in Brenham on a day when Truth is closed. I've never been disappointed by either one, but since this comment was about LJ's I'll add this: Don't sleep on their greens. I'm not a big fan of greens, but these are great.

I think both are outstanding. I personally prefer LJ's brisket over truth, but like Truth's sausage better and Truth also has several outstanding dessert items. I haven't compared the other meats so I don't have an opinion on anything other than brisket and sausage. Both are solid options.

All the cheap cuts are now designer cuts and they cost more than premium cuts.

I think being the mayor, having a day job and doing bbq was too much. I also read that he inherited a house about of town so he wasn't able to be the mayor anymore.
