The dude in the truck in the OP is a dbag, deserves to get his ass kicked. No doubt.
That being said, bike riders deserve most of the rage directed at them they get. Because the idea that "most riders follow traffic laws" is beyond laughable. If it were close to true, there might be some merit in it. But it's not, not even close. The comments here and on any other thread about that remind me of how people view congress - every other congressman is useless and needs to be voted out, but the one that reps me is doing a great job! Nothing is further from the truth in either category, but you won't get anybody to actually admit that point.
And that is one of the primary reasons that people seem to hate them so much - because they are supposed to be beholden to the same laws as vehicles when on the road, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't. How many failure to stop at a stop sign tickets are issued to bicycle riders by HPD or APD or DPD, etc. every year? My guess is that the number is about .000000000000001% of those issued to vehicles for the exact same thing. Same with impeding the flow of traffic citations, failure to use turn signals, etc. (admittedly, those are much smaller numbers than something like speeding for vehicles too, but the percentages issued to bike riders compared to autos is likely the same).
That being said - I also think that certain vehicle citations are woefully inadequate. Driving slow in the left hand lane should be a much higher issued citation than speeding. Pacing the car next to you and blocking the ability of traffic behind you to pass should be a much higher issued ticket. 18 wheelers that don't hit the fuggin gas pedal when passing and take 10 miles to pass the 18 wheeler in the right hand lane draw a significant amount of ire from me. I also think speeding is a BS ticket in the overwhelming majority of situations, so there's that.
I rarely follow stop signs in my neighborhood, and don't have a single issue with bike riders not stopping at stop signs or turns when there is no other traffic around. There is no need at that point, vehicle or bike IMO. But if visibility is limited or there are other vehicles on the road, they definitely should be obligated to follow the same laws as vehicles, and they damned sure shouldn't get pissed when vehicle drivers get mad at them.
I also love the attitude of several posters here that I should calm down and live with being inconvenienced by bike riders on the road (no matter how dangerous their "right" is making the road to them and any vehicles in the vicinity), and my not doing so is the problem. Doesn't seem to be a 2 way street in that regard for some reason, funny how that works, isn't it? And indicative of the fundamental issue - YOU have to give in to ME, but I don't have to give in to YOU in any situation.
And **** Critical Mass. In the neck, they get no sympathy from me for anything that befalls them. Until bike riders in general police their own, this is the image that most folks are going to have, right wrong or indifferent about bike riders on the road.
