I know I shouldn't reply, but 20-30 mins is a gross exaggeration, even on a super curvy road. There's simply no way I believe this.
You should live where the MS150 runs.
So sorry you get inconvenienced one weekend a year... Better planning and you wouldn't be trying to drive that weekend.

Hell, watch a MotoGP race. Those guys wipe out at 200+ and get right back up.

When's the last time you saw a recreational motorcycle rider wearing a full leather suit, race gloves, boots, airbag system, and helmet? We're talking $6,000+ worth of protection when most of the riders I see on a daily basis are wearing a helmet and mesh jacket at best.

My comment about MotoGP was about the previous poster seemingly making life or death all about how fast you are going. Obviously, to avoid serious injury or death at 200+ mph would require gear that you wouldn't usually see on a typical rider.

But to your point, I do see quite a few (mostly on sportbikes) that wear a full-face helmet, leather jacket and gloves, and most wear pants. It's not leather, but way better than shorts and flip flops. I even see some wearing racing boots on occasion.

Point is, there's a saying in the motorcycle community. "Dress for the slide, not the ride".

I had zip together leathers, gloves, boots and a fullface helmet on my ride before work this morning. No airbag, though I wouldn't mind the A* system that's supposed to work with other brand jackets.

You are a rarity. I was 100% AGATT a few years into my riding as well. It was pre-airbag systems, but I had a two piece A* suit, boots, gloves, and helmet as well. Those 100 degree days on MoPac at 6PM were turrrrble. Now at A&M, I was a dumbass and rode to class in shorts, flip-flops, t-shirt, and a backwards ball cap.

The dude in the truck in the OP is a dbag, deserves to get his ass kicked. No doubt.

That being said, bike riders deserve most of the rage directed at them they get. Because the idea that "most riders follow traffic laws" is beyond laughable. If it were close to true, there might be some merit in it. But it's not, not even close. The comments here and on any other thread about that remind me of how people view congress - every other congressman is useless and needs to be voted out, but the one that reps me is doing a great job! Nothing is further from the truth in either category, but you won't get anybody to actually admit that point.

And that is one of the primary reasons that people seem to hate them so much - because they are supposed to be beholden to the same laws as vehicles when on the road, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't. How many failure to stop at a stop sign tickets are issued to bicycle riders by HPD or APD or DPD, etc. every year? My guess is that the number is about .000000000000001% of those issued to vehicles for the exact same thing. Same with impeding the flow of traffic citations, failure to use turn signals, etc. (admittedly, those are much smaller numbers than something like speeding for vehicles too, but the percentages issued to bike riders compared to autos is likely the same).

That being said - I also think that certain vehicle citations are woefully inadequate. Driving slow in the left hand lane should be a much higher issued citation than speeding. Pacing the car next to you and blocking the ability of traffic behind you to pass should be a much higher issued ticket. 18 wheelers that don't hit the fuggin gas pedal when passing and take 10 miles to pass the 18 wheeler in the right hand lane draw a significant amount of ire from me. I also think speeding is a BS ticket in the overwhelming majority of situations, so there's that.

I rarely follow stop signs in my neighborhood, and don't have a single issue with bike riders not stopping at stop signs or turns when there is no other traffic around. There is no need at that point, vehicle or bike IMO. But if visibility is limited or there are other vehicles on the road, they definitely should be obligated to follow the same laws as vehicles, and they damned sure shouldn't get pissed when vehicle drivers get mad at them.

I also love the attitude of several posters here that I should calm down and live with being inconvenienced by bike riders on the road (no matter how dangerous their "right" is making the road to them and any vehicles in the vicinity), and my not doing so is the problem. Doesn't seem to be a 2 way street in that regard for some reason, funny how that works, isn't it? And indicative of the fundamental issue - YOU have to give in to ME, but I don't have to give in to YOU in any situation.

And **** Critical Mass. In the neck, they get no sympathy from me for anything that befalls them. Until bike riders in general police their own, this is the image that most folks are going to have, right wrong or indifferent about bike riders on the road.

I mentioned it before. The problem is the trucks are GPS and/or satellite tracked, and if they speed, the driver catches hell.

Watching the trucks on I-40, I've seen them ride the brakes on downhills. In the old days, they'd gain speed on the downhill side.

They all need to stack up in the right lane and stay the eff over there then.

But there's one who's company lets him run 60.001mph, and he really, really, needs to pass the one ahead who's only doing 60.000.

Climbing east out of Albuquerque on I-40, there are signs telling trucks "Right Two Lanes Only". They ignore it.

I've had that encounter most likely with the same guy, same road (he was in a white truck). We were riding on the edge of the road and horn comes on from way down the road. He passes us, flips the bird, pulls into a long driveway (presumably his) gets out and walks into the middle of the road screaming at us. We just rode on by and didn't pay any attention to this guy.

My riding buddy said he's the kind of guy that will murder someone one day.

I do believe you should calm down, but only because driving angry is dangerous for your health and something you have control over in that: you and I cannot control the cyclists who behave in the manner you describe and while I find the disregard for laws and safety egregious and disturbing, I prefer to focus on getting to my destination with no mishaps and put their shenanigans out of mind.

As far as 'giving in to others,' when out for a run, I try and respect that auto drivers are trying to get somewhere and so I will alter my route so as not to interfere with traffic but it is not to much to ask that when I am in the crosswalk before y'all approach that you actually stop behind the line and not in the middle of the stripes. I really can't jump that fast.

On a completely different note but definitely outside: did you all know that Chad Haga (TAMU '10) is racing for Team Sunweb in the Tour de France? He has a Twitter and is pretty witty (maybe it's the M.E. Degree). The GC rider he is supporting is in third so Haga is doing a great job. Here is his page if you'd like to read it: https://twitter.com/ChadHaga?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Despite all the back and forth between the people who cycle and the people who wish the cyclists would cycle somewhere else, it's amazing that humans have invented so many ways to get from here to there!

Probably the same % of ace holes as ever there was, but the same % of 28 million is a way bigger number than when I grew up in the 50's!

Same with Aggies. In my day there were 7,500, and NO girls to "fight over". There's nearly ten times that amount sharing the campus (and the internet).

Perfect example of why bikes and 2,000 to 12,000 pound vehicles should not be sharing the same road bed. Honest, well-intentioned, reasonably intelligent folks are going to make mistakes and it's going to happen often when there are so many of the latter on the road. The result when the inevitable happens is that the outcome is often ten times as bad when the inanimate objects are so mismatched. Bad news when it's a motorcycle....but a bike is even more difficult to see and moves at a significantly different speed than the other vehicles.

Now consider that the cop is probably a ten times better driver than the average driver....and then add in the fact that probably 10% to 15% of licensed/unlicensed drivers out on the road don't put much value on human life and sure as heck wouldn't go out of their way to be inconvenienced by another vehicle.....whether it's a car or a bike.

Roads make great areas to run on and play on, but when the cost of an inevitable mistake is so high....it's seems incredibly optimistic to take that chance on a bike regardless of legal rights.
