I think it's just the picture.

It's also possible Pacifico or Leinenkugel is required to make it look straight. Tho, that may be true for most of the house....

This is probably a tease of an update, I have no pictures. But I'll grab them tonight or tomorrow.

Friday Chris (Texas Concrete Design) got the floors cleaned and waxed. They look great and the wall colors and ceiling tin pair well with them.

Sunday night was the first night in the new house! Not in the Master bedroom yet, but still pretty cool. We moved our old master bedroom furniture into the new 2nd bedroom (upgrading to king size in the new house).

That's 157 nights in the doghouse, minus a handful of days out of town.

Other than moving in the bedroom furniture, we added a shelf and clothes rod in the 2nd bed closet, hung all of the interior door (except for one), removed the doghouse door and installed it in the shop bath, moved washer/dryer back in, installed some door hardware, and other odds and ends.

Along with the misc. paint touch up, outlet setting, etc. next on the list is vanities, cabinets, light fixtures, security system, audio system, base boards, crown molding, door trim, window trim, and on and on.

This table saw should be showing up this week. So that will help with getting the cabinetry done.

Not much but here are some pics from the previous post.

2nd bedroom set up. As fun as the doghouse was, this is more comfy:

Congrats on moving in!

That table saw sure beats the hell out of my dewalt job site saw I make due with because of storage space.

Table saw showed up Friday.

The box with the rails and fence was pretty tore up, but everything looks to be OK. I don't take delivery off of freight trucks often, so I forgot to write the damage on the delivery slip. Hopefully it will be good.

This weekend we got our living room furniture moved in, dinning room table, and bar all set up.

Also got the kitchen a little more usable by moving in some more temporary cabinets and building a small section of temporary counter top. Range and microwave are in there too.

Main task for the weekend was tearing down the doghouse.

My brother and his family were up this weekend so I had help which was greatly appreciated and needed.

The plan all along was for the doghouse to come down and that part of the shop to become the wood shop part of the barn.

All cleaned up and table saw moved in. All the wood in the back is the doghouse. RIP.

Best part of the weekend is that things are starting to find there final place. Organization and usability are going way up.

This weekends task was doors and trim.

Mrs. Gringo and I pulled the pins and the door side hinges off all the interior doors. Laid some plastic down and stood them all up in the shop.

We also bought all the door trim and baseboards. Pre-primed. painted the doors, then started on the trim, laying it out to dry.

The trim went better than I thought. I set a stack about 16 high on the saw horses. Painted both edges, then set the stack back on the ground. Then we laid 8 pieces out on the saw horses. The spray gun could hit 4 boards perfectly. So a pass down and back got one coat on all 8 boards. After 2 coats with a little dry time between, they were done.

All the trim and doors done.

You can also see the back door in the previous picture. I just left it hung and sprayed it in place. This was Sunday and for whatever reason, it wasn't TOO hot outside, so we just left the door cracked to dry.

Monday we rehung all the doors and started on baseboards and door trim.

Still need to caulk and paint, but I got all the standard doors trimmed. I didn't do any that need trim boards ripped, no pocket doors. Here is a sample of the final product. Doors in the great room will have a little different head trim.

Last few weekends have been a little scattered between dove and teal openers, a funeral, and the house.

A shot of the baseboards and the little different head trim for the doors in the great room. There may still be a 1x2 that goes on top of the 1x6, on edge, we are undecided at this point on it.

Hung a ceiling fan in the bedroom we are staying in

We also got all of the LED's installed in the recessed light cans.

Installed all the door handle that didn't need something done to their door.

The biggest step forward was the shop side of the barn is now all wired and hot! This means the car lift can be fired up and adjustments made so it can be used. Welders and plasma cutter are now back to usable on 220V. The new table saw can now go together and put into service. Lights can be ordered and hung. Lots of stuff that makes me excited to get to do some shop work.

Teal season opener

Another beautiful day in Texas

If I'm lucky, this weekend the first vanity will be built. Also hope to start on the door trim that needs table saw attention.

Just in time for a break in the weather so it isn't complete hell working in a shop outdoors.

I'm glad you guys bumped this. It was on my list to post a reply but I haven't had time to dig for the thread, had to be page 10 or so.

So we're definitely not done yet, but a TexAgs party isn't out of the question come spring time. Maybe we'll do a TexAgs party right at the end when I need to do a lot of manual labor outside for the landscaping.......I promise if yall show up yall won't have to work........too much.

Cabinets have been started, more on that later.

Non-picture-worthy progress:

  • More trim installed around doors and baseboards
  • Cut-in all the wall paint at the ceiling. If you look back at the last post with the ceiling fan pic, you can see we left the pain short of the ceiling in anticipation of crown molding. Crown molding got axed. Amazing how much better the place feels with that paint straightened up.
  • Started moving stuff out of the shop and into the storage loft. (not shown in the pictures below).
  • The car lift is operational !!
  • Misc. other little things.

Shop lighting is done. 6 of these guys - High Bay UFO

Then outside lighting. Shop parking area. 2 of these - Wall Pack

Then front porch lighting. 2 under the porch, 1 under the parking area - Canopy Light

I still need to figure out what I will use for flood lights above the front porch. There is currently wiring stubbed out for one on each top corner of the front of the building.

Final lighting project completed is the storage loft lighting. Ran Romex and 2 outlet boxes. Each light takes one of the outlets, that leaves 2 more for random needs up there. 2 of these guys - 4 foot LED

Next was the table saw and integrated router table. This saw - 1023rlw and this router - Bosch Combo

Next were the cabinets. I started with one for out in the shop as practice. This one used sanded blonde birch from Lowes. I went a little overboard with mortise and tenons on this one. EVERYTHING is pretty much mortise and tenon. All were cut on the router table.

Still need to build doors. But I decided to start on the one for the hall bath to fix what I learned on the shop vanity. This one I tried out the Oak plywood from Lowes.

"Rendering"

Still using rabbits in some places

But also mixed in pocket holes

You can see on the last picture above 2 things. ONE, I didn't get to finish the face frame, one board short that prevented my from assembling it at all. And TWO, the toe kick is going to have an integrated pull out step to help younger kids reach the sink.

I'm undecided on which plywood to go with. The Oak seemed to assemble better, handled the screws better. But the Birch was made of almost twice as many layers which would make it more stable. Both cut nice, birch maybe a little better.

Kitchen cabinets have been largely designed. We sharpened the pencil on them a bit last night and I need to update some dimensions based on that.

You might check McCoys for their Russian Birch 5' x 5' plywood. A couple years ago I was building some shelves and it was cheaper and better than what Lowes had to offer.

Started cutting mortises in the first inning last night. Had the majority of the piece to length already.

Mortises were done on the router table same as the ones I've done before. 1/4" wide, 3/4" deep, 1" long. 1/4" bit in the router. Fence set 3/8" away to center the mortise. took 3 passes to get to full depth, each one increasing 1/4". Put an extra 1/16" or so on the final pass to create a bit of relief for glue in the back of the mortise.

Did the tenons on the table saw this time. Fence set 3/4" away (tenon length). Blade height ~1/4". Bumped the piece up against the fence and made a cut on all 4 sides, creating the tenon shoulder. Then just made multiple passes to get rid of the waste. If I had a dado blade it could have been done in just the first 4 cuts. This worked much better than doing it on the router table with a 3/4" bit.

Finished up the tenons by about the middle of the 8th. At that time Cash had come in for bed and the end of the game. He was not amused by the 11 stranded runners.

But the face frame turned out decent. Still need to glue together, hopefully tonight.

There has been progress though. Cabinets and other odds and ends are moving along.

First things first. We have had some AWESOME sunsets the past week or so.

Before we were able to continue with much work, we had to fill the freezer. Volunteered to cull some deer for a high fence ranch. Full ranger in 45 minutes.

Full smoke house 7 days later

So back to the house. The base cabinets have their boxes built now, test fit:

not pictured is another wedge shaped box and bigger rectangle box to the left.

Small detail of the back of the boxes. The 1/4" rear panel will slip into the slot here:

Then sanded, primed, and painted. Along with the vanity for the hall bath.

Picked up some more primed, finger-jointed trim for the window casings and pocket door jambs. Layout area ready:

Had a method set up were we stacked the boards on the saw horses in the back ground and painted all the edges. Then transferred 3-4 to the horses closer to the camera and painted the fronts. Then set them inside to dry. We repeated the processes for each size board (1x12's then 1x8's, ect).

I couldn't help but case and trim the front door that evening with all of it painted.

I also knocked out some more base boards in various areas.

Next project was the hanging rod for clothes in the laundry room. This will hang from the ceiling in the laundry room. Built out of 1.25" or 1.5" schedule 40 steel pipe. Coped the 2 joints, TIG'ed it together. Cut some basic squares to mount it to the ceiling, the idea was to match the trim on the door hardware. Added some scrap circles to the ends to keep hangers on the rod. 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of epoxy matte black. Hoping the paint can withstand the hangers sliding back and forth.

Next was lighting. Had 2 flood lights to add to the front of the building, above the front porch.

New lights:

With the front porch also

We were hoping to get our new bed built also, but didn't happen. We want to get the windows cased and trimmed in the master, add binds and the bed so we can move over there from the 2nd bedroom. Mrs. Gringo found a design she liked, we then modified the headboard to be a little less "foo-foo".

Original design to the left, 2 alternatives to the right:

I also started installing all of the door and window sensors for the security system. Syncing each on as you go takes longer than expected. so only got about half way through.

This week I hope to get the kitchen cabinet face frames done, and maybe the master windows as well.

AGGODDESS - she is familiar with Ana White. I've built a handful of her stuff (with some revisions). This frame came from a very similar site that is based in Texas supposedly.

GrimesCoAg95 - Thanks for the recommendation, I called and talked with Adam and just sent him over a list to be quoted. I had been looking at some places online, but would much rather use a local source.

I was wondering when someone would point that out.

The pantry will go to the right of the door, up against the trim. So the top can't overhang that side.

It bothers the heck out of me too, but if we did the overhang there would be a 3/4" strip of wall between the trim and the pantry.
