Heard it rained up to 8" around Seguin last night and 3" in many areas. Geronimo and mill creeks may cut off 90A. Guadalupe was already in the lower sloughs dumping water from canyon so it may get a little bigger than such a rain normally would produce.

So my beautiful lawn which was lush and green is now struggling despite my routine water scheduling. I think it was spoiled with the amounts of water it had. I'm going back to mowing every other week to help it out.

That's why St Augustine sucks for turf grass. I have the same problem. If you water the hell out of it, it stays a nice thick blanket of green. Neglect it for a few days, even after a foot of rain falls on it, and it all turns yellow.

Yep, had to fire up the irrigation for the first time since last fall. I have so much tree coverage that St. augustine is really my only option.

I have bermuda that hasn't been watered since last summer. It needs mowing every few days.

We just had one if the longest and worst droughts in the states history. The only thing that pulled us out of it was the wettest month EVER. And now only two weeks later, after enough rain to cover the entire state in 8 inches of water, people are already turning their sprinklers back on? Does that strike anyone else as messed up???
We really need to rethink our lawns and water usage in Texas.

People actually turned their sprinklers off?

Most of the people with sprinkler systems in my area have had them running non stop, you'd walk by their houses in May when the sprinklers were on and the water spent little time on the yards on the way to the street. They could have saved time by just running hoses straight to the street.

As stated many times in this thread, as long as water is heavily subsidized and "cheap," people will continue to waste it.

We live in a townhouse in houston and got rid of all our grass, just a paver patio and artificial grass. It's amazing how many people mocked the idea of me doing it until they saw it for the first time and realized it actually looks good.

I was stunned, but thrilled when I read the news. Corpus has met the storage criteria to lift water restrictions from stage 2 to stage 1. They chose instead to keep stage 2 restrictions in place.

I'll try for some constructive posting:

This is where shade tolerant landscape plants come into play. Yards with border to border grass can be boring. Try some plants like Turks Cap or border shrubs like the dwarf Bufford Holly.

Mow it taller. Almost all the St. Aug lawns I see are mowed too short. Usually because a lawn company is hired and they don't care. Or your St. Aug is planted in full sun. If that is the case, let it die and allow Bermuda to take its place. Or again, some sun loving landscape plants.

Something is wrong if, after 3 of the wettest weeks ever, you needed to water again Either mowed too low, or St. Aug in full sun.

Hopefully some of this was helpful, and not the same ol "St. Aug is the devil you suck, you suck, you suck" type of post.

Actually, a month straight of record rain followed by three weeks of hot, dry will cause a lawn to show signs of distress. You have a lawn used to getting inches every day for a month, all of a sudden get nothing. I am not a big fan of St. Augustine but if HOAs require it and require it to be healthy, nothing wrong with turning the sprinkler on after 3 weeks of hot, dry weather.

EV Spence is up to 5.3% after the rains. First time to this little lake. It's an oasis in the desert.

Mow my yard plenty tall and haven't had sprinklers on since October but yep OB gonna judge. Anyone who wants to give me money to replace my sod I'll set up a gofundme acct. 3 dogs, two kids and 5 years of drought might make it thirsty.

I only mow my front yard (st. Aug) when I get letters from my hoa.

It can go about a month and a half before it gets too crazy. And it's healthier than any of my neighbors.

My goal this year is to not run my sprinklers at all. Doing good so far.

Was trying for some constructive lawn advice. Apologies if it came across judgy. I had St. Aug in my last home. Just found that it was pretty easy to care for if I mowed it high and didn't attempt to grow in full sun. Ymmv.

No worries. I was thinking more along the lines of those hollering about sprinklers going off in the rain only to find out later it's the septic system.

I have had my system on manual for 6 years. Even through the drought.
But I'll just tell you, I lost 40+ mature trees to the drought and not one where I installed irrigation.
Ordinarily you lose 30ish% of trees when you install irrigation as they are not accustomed to the water.
That new irrigation actually kept the trees alive rather than kill them out.

The spaghetti models on the link above show an ideal landfall for central Texas and the coastal bend. But that'll also hit the hill country hard again too.
