Interesting. I wonder if there is a market for them in Texas. Would be awesome to sell whole coons to someone around here for $9.99/lb

Have a buddy who thought it would be a good and economical idea to feed the meat from coons they killed to his coon dogs...they wouldn't eat it....

Raccoons used to get up on the back porch and Mama'd just sweep 'em off with a broom.

I've read articles about underground market for coons in Texas. In other words, guys selling coon carcasses out of the back of their pickups to people who grew up eating coons and consider it a delicacy.

So a busy body didn't like it and got the gov involved. Rinse and repeat.

Customer Christina Dow was at the market, and upon seeing the frozen raccoons, filmed the scene on her cell phone. She shared the video on social media.
"The way it's packaged in the store, it's so real, and it's so fresh, and you don't see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them, and their expression, with their tongue hanging out," Dow said.
Might do some people some good to be reminded where FOOD actually comes from.

I did too and a LOT of people ate them. I'd be willing to be people in your area ate them too but they may not have bragged about it.

I've seen this done for buffalo and carp.

There are guys that sell them on the side of the road on the east side of Houston. Kinda like a taco truck, but coon meat instead.

I don't see it. I can't imagine the type of folks who ate coon in east Texas paying for it, especially $9.99/lb. They are just gonna walk out the back door and shoot one.

Wall St. Journal article several years back about a trapper in East Texas who'd sell raccoon carcasses to folks in Louisiana. He'd leave the fur on one paw to prove it was a raccoon. Evidently some ne'er do wells would skin small dogs or cats & try to pass them off as raccoons to those wishing to dine on such.

My nephew in Georgia hunts them regularly.

I asked him "what do you do with them?"

He says "I sell them"

I said "You sell them? To whom (well I probably said 'who')?

He says "to _____________ (you fill in the blank)"

I said "Why?"

He says "They eat them. $.50 a pound."

I know some folks in SE Dallas, and down around Fairfield that can't get enough of them.

In the early 80' s when coon hides brought $20 or more I was trapping in Brazoria county before going to work each morning .
My dad had a colored person that he worked with ask what I was doing with the bodies and would I sell some?
Once skinned gutting was easy then throw in freezer.
For about 5 years I sold him every coon body I could catch $5 for small $8 for large he bought several hundred over the years!
Was great money for a 20 year old kid !
Christmas and New Years he would call and want 20 or more at a time wish I could have filled those orders.
Most we're going to dinner functions at his church .

I've eaten them. Young ones are similar to squirrel. When I trapped in the '70s, I had no problems selling the ones I caught. Didn't get anywhere close to $9.99 a pound though.

I used to pass a market everyday on my drive to work that had "coon & rabbit" posted on the marquee outside. I never stopped and have moved since then. It was in south Beaumont.

I know the little turds will climb the pole of a deer feeder and spin out more than they can eat.

I live north of Baton Rouge and pass two "fresh coons" signs on the back of trucks every day on the way to work

A while back I went coon hunting in Louisiana with my father-in-law. I decided to bring a few back to Texas and BBQ them with some friends. I truly believe that we were probably the first and last people to actually eat coon on Padre Island since the Karankawa Indians. It doesn't taste like chicken, and I haven't eaten any since then.....I do know that it's still common for people to eat coon in his part of Louisiana. I still go coon hunting with my son and father in law whenever he gives us the opportunity, and it's a lot of fun.

Chop it into thirds like a rabbit, salt, pepper and garlic. A little chicken broth and pineapple juice in a Dutch oven, and all is good.

I will say, after collecting coons for another grad student that was working on coon parasites, I haven't touched another coon and don't really plan to any time soon.

Guy I used to work with said they'd sell raccoons to black people back in the 70's. At some point someone sold a cat or dog as a raccoon(or so the story goes). Through word of mouth the story got around(could have been rumor) and no one would buy one from then on with out at least one foot still attached.

Even today they still make sure that at least one paw is still attached to the raccoon carcass.

If you will eat a chicken, you should have no problem eating a coon.

Worked outside of Baton Rouge a good bit for several years. There would be signs show up on the roadside "Fresh coons." Always cars in the drive, the exchange being made......cash fo'coon.

Boy Scout trapping campout. Eat what you kill. Oppossum is some nasty stuff.

I work with a guy from West Virginia who also lived in the Florida panhandle for a number of years. His list of critters that he hasn't eaten is a lot shorter than the list that he's had. Raccoon is one of the more normal ones for him.

This is similar to what I have made (just replace pressure cooker with dutch oven), and was really good. As stated earlier, I have no inclination for coons any more.
