We have some lantana growing around the base of an oak tree in our backyard. Up until now I thought it was some kind of mint plant because of how it smells but I've recently noticed the yellow/orange flowers which leads me to believe it's lantana.

We've lived in the house for 1 year now and routinely I've seen my 70 lbs lab mix pull off a leaf and eat it. I've heard lantana's poisonous to dogs but she's never exhibited any signs or symptoms that it's affected her.

I'm going to pull it up this evening just to be on the safe side but wanted to hear the OB's opinion.

Lantana is a mint. Roll the stem between your fingers. Is it square? Then it is in the mint family.

Macadamia nuts too, I've been told.

Sago palm too.

oleander is a real common landscape plant and is poisonous.

There are dozens of common landscape plants that have poisonous parts. Angel Trumpet has killed many. Scientific name for Yaupon Holly? Ilex vomitoria. Mountain Laurel beans can make you trip out like peyote. Many more examples out there, I just hate typing on an iPhone!

Oleander and Sago are toxic to most mammals.

Maybe we had/have smart dogs, as my Mom always grew lantana, as does my wife...and none of the dogs have poisoned themselves. Oh yeah, oleander also present in the yard. I do make sure the oleander trimmings stay out of the pasture, cuz cows are certainly dumber than my dogs
