Good lord I'm still just amazed at how big this game is. I made it to the boss of haligtree, died… decided to go exploring elsewhere and strengthen up some more. Ventured into the sewers for the first time to discover that's another HUGE area.

Super creepy doomsday drink the koolaid stuff down there, but the mood was promptly ruined by worthless platforming that has me rage quitting for the night.

This just makes me laugh. Why do we play games that make us feel like this? The worst part is how addicting it is to keep banging your head against some of these walls....

This is why I just overlevel my character. After getting steamrolled too many times I said I'm going to do the same to them.

New game + has been a joke compared to my first play through

It's made bosses much easier. I beat Rennala on the very first try and went in completely blind. Far easier boss than margit or godrick.

I said it before, but Margit was easy for me on my first play through because I must have been at 90% completion of Limgrave before going to fight him.

That definitely is the "easy mode" of Elden Ring; being able to go off and level or rework your entire build just to take down one boss.

Finally stacked enough holy defense on myself to take down the last bosses, have a bit of exploring and item collection to do still on this play through before I start another game. Maybe will try caster of some sort on NG+.

Oh yeah, 101 hours (whoop) and lvl 152 when I beat first play though. Did almost no grinding for runes except some at the very start when I was trying to get some body armor for my poor Wretch.

So now that I've 100 percented forbidden west. It's off to a new game. Having never played a souls game before, how has this one been?

In all seriousness, it will be a vast departure from anything you have ever experienced in an open world game. You will not have a map covered in objectives and markers you have to go and clear. You don't have long quest log you have to keep referring back to. You won't have a compendium of items and materials you have to go find.

From Software games are ambiguous and unforgiving.

What Elden Ring provides to the newbie is the ability to say, "This is hard... Imma go do something else for a while, first." Then you come back and have a new weapon, ash of war, summon, or just learned to "get gud". Now that boss seems much more manageable.

NEVER expect for the game to blatantly tell you anything. Be curious and be ready to fail. You will die a lot, and that is part of the design. You learn from failing. You will sometimes walk into a boss room, barely take away 1/20th of his HP, and die immediately. Instead of rage quitting, think about what you could have done differently. Try again. If you are getting one-shotted with a standard attack, you may be underleveled. The benefit you will have, joining in their most recent game, is they no longer punish you with a 5 minute hike back to the boss that just killed you. There is usually a close Point of Grace or Statute to respawn at, which usually puts you less than 20 seconds away from the place you just died.

I have said it before in this thread, but I always focus on killing quickly. Be mindful of your stats and focus on only 3. The others, you just get up to a point that allows you to use whatever weapon you want. You will be able to respec in game, but not for a while, and it's not unlimited.

Focus points on your main Damage attribute (Dex, Str, Faith, Int, Arc), then Vigor for HP pool, then either Mind for a magic user or End for a melee user. Don't be one of those newbies that throws all of your attributes in VIgor. Each point doesn't give you THAT much HP, and you are probably only dying because you aren't avoiding attacks. You're better off just learning not to get hit, and putting those points into your damage. Bosses hit so damn hard, that an extra 125 HP won't help you as much as an extra 15 dmg, imo. I went back and forth between VIgor and Dexterity until Vigor was 25. I then focused on Dex until about 50, then worked on vigor a little more. I think my vigor was around 40-45 at level 150.

Always keep this in mind... many people have beaten the dude that pissed you off. It's sometimes easy to forget about a mechanic in the game, because you hadn't used it yet. If you hit a wall, stop and think if there is a better way to confront the challenge.

That's about all I have. Elden Ring is a top 5 game of all time, for me.

I'd never played a souls game either, and this is one of the most fun games I've played. Took some getting used to and lots of Google, but it's great once you get used to it. Co-op system is dumb though.

I agree with what has already been said. This is my first souls game and I am loving it. My top 3 games are this, Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn.

The first 1 or 2 hours I thought it was "alright," but after that it immediately grabbed my attention and has not let go. Such a great game and I definitely have not gotten open world fatigue.

So...diving in. Chose a samurai for first character so we'll see how that goes.

All a class does is allocate some attribute points and give you some starting gear. Really, you can be whatever you want to be.

As expected, I got slapped around pretty good in the early areas to the noob traps...golden horse guy, goblins hanging off walls in the corner behind the blow torch pillar in an early dungeon, the damned dog inside the same dungeon, first militia camp, and then the *******ed teleporting trap chest

Haven't played this one yet, but I think the thing that captures me about the souls games is how it drops you in the middle of these incredible looking environments and you have no idea where to go or what to do... the only thing you know is that an ass kicking is always just around the corner.

It's that cautionary exploration that is the real draw for me. I'm always a "stop and smell the roses" kind of player... but this game forces you to slow down and take it all in. If you don't, "You died".

I may get flamed for it but I cheat at this game. I look up maps and wiki. I do it just enough to keep my gaming efficient. There is absolutely no way I can keep track of the quests on my own. I forget the dialog as soon as I hit next. I overlevel a bit so I die a little bit less. I look up OP builds because I don't have time myself to try everything.

What is incredible about this game is I'm still loving it. There is so much depth that cheating doesn't ruin the game like in others. I've never played a true open world game where I wanted to explore every inch and not get bored and end up just playing to beat it before losing interest. Sometimes I wish the bosses weren't so hard so I can just stand back and take it all in instead of running for my life immediately. hah

Great game this one is.

Don't be embarrassed about this, everyone uses guides for this game especially if you don't play for a few days. The reality is that it's impossible to figure out some side quests without guides and many items require guides to find them (anyone who found the second academy key without a guide is a damn liar).

I used the fextralife interactive map a lot, and my playthrough still was almost 90 hours. I try to explore some on my own but I'll check the wiki to see if I missed anything. I can't help but read Reddit and watch videos either. Being bored at work leads me to doing that stuff.

I definitely had help with the Ranni quest line, though.

Is that the key to the chest? I moved on and have an icon on the map for it so that I will come back to it. I try to do as much as I can without a guide, but I will look up certain things (like that key) if I go back to it again and can't find it myself.

No, it's the second glintstone key that is required to finish a side quest line. There not a chance in hell anyone would ever find that key without a guide. You would have to explore every inch of the map to find it organically.

I actually did find that second key by accident lol

I started looking up some specific quest line things but played through pretty much spoiler free until pretty near the end when I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing things progressing.

Finally downed Malania tonight when I got lucky that she didn't use waterfowl dance in the second phase and instead did scarlet aeonia again shortly after the opening which allowed me the time to burn her dead. I think that's the last rune bearer I had left.

Now I will be full guiding out to see where other legendary weapons and stuff are that I need to get trophies!

So I met Agheel last night when I was around level 18. Saw lots of undead looking dudes in a circle and thought it would be easy killings while mounted up. As I approached....Boom. Giant fireball that one shots me and out comes a *******ed dragon. LOL

Up to level 45 or so before I had to go offshore, looking to get back at it next weekend. Fantastic game and I've only scratched the surface. Just got Vyke's War Spear and now have to dump some levels into Faith.

Just FYI, the Madness status effect, like on that spear, only builds up on other Tarnished. So it won't do anything to most of the monsters and enemies you fight in the game.
