A used 24-70 2.8 is $650.

A used 24-70 2.8 mkII is about $1350.
The first 24-70 is complete garbage. Don't get it at all.

The EF-S 17-55 2.8 is a better lens.

And I got the 17-55 Amazon Warehouse like new for $600.

Glad you avoided the 6D mkII

Thanks for talking me out of it.

I got the 7d last night. I was just taking pictures of the kids sledding in the back yard going over a small jump with the 70-200 2.8ii (I live in New England). Amazing. Focus tracking and burst (obviously) is way better than my 70d was. Very few shots in the burst missed focus.

Wish I hadn't left my camera on a train, but happy with my choice!

We just had this photo printed out and while it looked really good on my laptop's monitor, when it printed out, the building (and I guess the whole photo itself) was a decent amount darker. This definitely reduced the delineation between the vertical wood members on the left side of the building.

How do you make sure what you see on a computer monitor will be as close to what you'll get when you have it printed?

Thanks!

My previous monitor was a Samsung and while pics looked great after running through lightroom, pictures were definitely much darker printed.

I've since switched to a Dell monitor that was color calibrated and now pics turn out much better on my pixma pro-100. I gave up some screen size for color accuracy.

You do need to regularly calibrate any monitor if you are serious about having it look right.

Also remember than many places will auto edit whatever print to their own algorithm, which you likely don't want.

Look up 'soft proofing' in Lightroom.

The problem is that the color gamut of your monitor has a greater range than printed media.

If you are printing yourself, you can download a color profile for your printer, and for the photo paper. You then go to soft proofing in the Lightroom develop module and select the appropriate color profiles. Lightroom will show a before/after that shows the current edit, and what it should look like printed.

If you are using a printing service, some of them have color profiles on their websites.

Guitarsoup - many years ago, you recommend I purchase a used body to learn how to take pictures. I rather enjoyed this using a couple lenses you recommended. A couple years ago, my Canon 20D started to give out. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles for the landscape, flying, and portraits I shoot.

Could I just buy a cheaper body and call it a day? I'm hesitant to purchase another older used body, but it worked last time. Any suggestions where to go or what to get?

Next question..what is my budget right? I want to do this on the cheap. ">

If 20D worked for you... Anything newer should be fine.. 30, 40, 50D... Starting with 60D, bodies are no longer magnesium alloy rather plastic. But it does videos and has articulating LCD.

I had a 50D. It's a fine camera. Now if you can find a 7D not 70D for less than $300 that has less than 20,000 shutter count, it will be a good camera for you for a long time.

I'd probably go with 7D, 70D or 7D2 depending on your spending comfort.

I would never do that. It didn't come out right.

If I would've said "find 70D for less than $300" I would have been ridiculed..

Yes, if anyone can find a 70D for less than $300, hit that buy button now.

Depending on the budget I do have a 7DmkII I could sale for around $850 (typically ~$1,000 used on KEH). Maybe has around 10,000 shutter actuations. Currently it is sitting in a drawer as a backup in case I break my 5D.

If it weren't for the action stuff, I'd seriously recommend the original Canon 5D. It still produces a great file and is now dirt cheap. Otherwise, the 7D/7D2 route is probably your best bet.

broke down and finally got the Canon 70-200 f 2.8 II. Been saving up for awhile and finally decided to pull the trigger.

my 2 year old was not cooperating today, so I found a subject that was more docile.

I would like a waterproof action camera that isn't too expensive. Preferably something small and lightweight to mount on a baseball cap during my vacation runs. Is the GoPro Hero 5 session the best option? Pros and cons, please.

Just got back from NYC with nothing but the X-H1 and 23/f2 (35mm equiv). Great walkaround combo, and awesome performance, much more fun to shoot with than the X-T2. However...that feather shutter is rearing its head again...strangers had NO IDEA how to take a picture with it, although I probably shouldn't have been handing a $2000 camera to strangers in NYC anyways...

in regards to the color calibration question awhile back, this is what I use, and is currently on sale.

http://www.datacolor.com/photography-design/promotions/winter-savings-2018-nsa/

normally it's $189, currently at $139.

FYI, i got mine for $99 from BH Photo awhile back, so it may be worth holding off if you are currently satisfied with how your images look on screen vs print.

I was driving down the road headed to the gun range very early this morning and saw the fog and all the birds circled around the pond. I had my camera and the 100-400 lens, so I swung a u-turn and wandered into the field for this picture.

Many times I see something lovely and keep driving and I'm trying to catch the little moments. It also means always grabbing the cameras when I venture out for the day. The pond was across a pasture so it would not have been an iPhone shot.

This was one of the shots from the first time I've tried portraits. A couple of friends are opening up a restaurant in Denver and my wife and I flew up for the soft open. He let me practice on him a but and I'm pretty happy with the results.

So I'm looking at updating from my D60. I'm realizing there's been a load of changes, among them the EXPEED processors. I think I have an EXPEED 1 now. I'm seeing a decent deal on a refurb D7500 that's got an EXPEED 5. And a guy in my neighborhood's got his D610 (and I know that's an FX) for a little less than the D7500, but it's got an EXPEED 3. How big of a difference is there between, say, EXPEED 3 and 5? I guess I just don't understand what exactly it's doing.

The 610 is a full frame and will have better image quality because of the bigger sensor. Expeed is just the processor

So you're saying the D610 will have better/higher image quality than the D7500, even though it's a couple years older (I think)?

OK oh educated ones, I haven't shopped cameras in awhile so I'm not up to speed on the latest and greatest. My main camera is a 5dmkIII with a few EF L lenses. But that's a big and heavy rig so I'm shopping for a "street kit" for some international travel. What I'm looking for is:

- Light/compact (but not too compact)
- Needs to have quick enough response (autofocus/etc) for quick street action (no sports speeds needed)
- An available lens good enough for nighttime street photography (think Bangkok, etc.)
- Possible availability of a housing for underwater photography (snorkeling)
- Video capable

Thoughts / suggestions?

I'm open to non-Canon gear as well.

The obligatory Sony a7III with a Metabones adapter suggestion, although I don't think an Olympus would be a bad idea.

In the point and shoot world the Sony RX100 III-V or the Canon G7X II would be good.

$2k+ was a bit more than I was looking for as a second lightweight rig given that I already have a 5dmkiii...but still in the realm of possibility. I was hoping the market has something nice to offer around $1k or less (not including any extra lenses I want to add).
