So I've always been a huge guitar fan but never really got around to taking lessons and learning how to play. I own Rock Band 3 and the basic game controller but not the "pro" stringed guitar.

So for Christmas should I ask for a cheap real electric guitar + Rocksmith? Or ask for a Rock Band Pro guitar to hook up to RB3 and try to learn thru that?

I don't know anything about RB3 but I picked up Rocksmith. I've had a decent chance to mess around with it. First, I'll say I'm more than a beginner guitarist but somewhere in the lower level intermediate area. I like Rocksmith for what it is. Its Guitar Hero using a real guitar and a nice play along system.

But this thing can't teach you to play guitar. There are so many techniques, etc it just can't teach you. Maybe because I'm not a beginner, I feel it need tabs to help you determine hand positions so that as more notes are added you haven't learned to play the "dumbed down" song incorrectly.

Anyway, I like the game, its fun, the menus could use some work, but I can't imagine never having picked up a guitar and playing this game. Go get yourself a guitar, go to justinguitar.com. Then pick up Rocksmith just for fun later on.
