i can't figure out why people want to dump on Stroud when he's missing not just his best 2 weapons, but arguably the best 1-2 WR punch in the NFL. Nico Collins was the #1 WR in the game when he got hurt. What QB is going out there with Tank Dell, John Metchie, Dalton Schultz, and 73-year-old Robert Woods and putting up 350 yards passing?

The OC is terrible, but when you have nobody to throw to who is a legit threat in the NFL, defenses are going to start teeing off on you.

Well he did have a wide open touchdown but was slow to see it and threw a lazy ass pass that got intercepted.

That play kind of summed up the second half.

Stroud takes on the identity of his coaches in the second half.

They play it safe with a lead rather than going for the jugular and finishing a team.

It never turns out well when you play to not lose.

This is basically what salisbury was saying this morning on 790….they get complacent and start relying too much on fairbairn and play just to get the field goals in the second half instead of going for the kill

It's the way Kubiak always coached (except when he had Peyton Manning). It's the way Shannahan coaches too (which is why Kyle Shanahan's teams will always meltdown in the biggest moments). It shouldn't shock anyone that it's now happening to the Texans.

They'll continue to win plenty of games and do well being in a weak division (that's the advantage of the Kubiak and Shanahan coaching trees). But, expect meltdown until proven otherwise.

Decided to review some stats through week 10 to see what jumps out at me and there's a few things of note. Some of these I know are probably already understood but it helps me to see this stuff.

1 - Houston is a better first half team, our opponents are better second half teams. Houston on average scores 14.2 points in the first half and 7.9 in the second. Opponents average 8.5 in the first and 14.1 in the second. Houston's strongest quarter is the 2nd quarter with 8.2 points. Houston's opponents best quarter is the 4th quarter with 7.7 points.

2 - Houston is 6-4 with a negative point differential (221-226)

3 - Houston has only scored 22 TD's, opponents have scored 27. Houston has only scored more TD's than their opponent in 2 games this season, Jaguars and Patriots. The other 8 games they've scored less TD's in 5 of them.

4 - Houston has 23 FG's to our opponent's 13. Houston has less TD's than FG's and our opponents score TD's to FG's at over a 2:1 ratio.

To me this boils down to the last 2 points I made. Houston doesn't score TD's at a rate they need to be competitive with the good teams in football. I only ran these numbers for Houston but I would venture to gamble the good teams in the NFL don't have more FG's than TD's. TD drives are also going to chew up more clock than FG drives, which gives your defense more time to rest. I do think the fact that our offense sputters in the 2nd half makes the defense have to work too hard and they gas out, hence our worst scoring half is the seond and it's also our opponent's best half. That's not tenable for any team other than the one leading the AFC South. That's a recipe to win a bad division and get bounced in the first round.

I do think this boils down to the offensive line if you want to focus on a position group. As mad as I am at Slowik that entire group is not playing acceptable football and hinders them on most plays. Stroud isn't being protected enough and the number of times Mixon runs into a wall is ridiculous. They're play is not acceptable. Slowik is still not doing what he needs to but that line is just awful.

We saw shades of it last year when coming out of halftime the play calling was just absolute dog shlt.

But overall last year they were letting it fly when they were the unknown underdogs playing with nothing to lose. Now with the expectations they're playing like they're walking on egg shells.

You can tell by their facial expressions on TV and their play on the field.

Per espn, so looks like it has happened once before

The Texans (6-4) became the second team since 1933 to lose a game in which they caught five interceptions and led by at least 15. Previously, teams were 373-1-1 when leading by at least 15 and snagging five interceptions. The other time a team lost in that fashion was in Week 11 of 1970, when the Chicago Bears lost to the Baltimore Colts 21-20 despite Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas throwing five interceptions, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Nobody was going nuts over play calling when Nico and Diggs were healthy. CJ has no real WR to lean on and it's showing. Teams are going run blitz and pressure CJ until Nico comes back.
This. Coaches didn't just forget how to coach and CJ didn't forget how to play. The same guys that led the huge turnaround last year are still here.

The fact is the Texans played above their talent last year and won some games they probably shouldn't have. As a reward they got a first place schedule this year versus playing a last place schedule last year. There is going to be some regression. They have to learn how to win when it's expected and how to win tough games.

The Lions are a perfect example of what staying the course can produce. They surprised most people in Campbell's first year (2021). Then, they started 2022 1-6, but finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs in Campbell's 2nd year (2022). In the 3rd year they showed a ton of growth and made it to the conference finals. They never panicked. They showed consistent growth and played through some periodic setbacks.

Anyone who thought Stroud wouldn't ever struggle was a fool. He's still learning. He's a future All-Pro QB.

Texans are about to run off 4 straight wins and get Nico back. They'll go into the Chiefs game 10-4 and will win at least one of the 2 games against the Chiefs and Ravens. They'll finish up with an win over the Titans and enter the playoffs 12-5. They'll make some noise in the playoffs and scare one of the elite teams. They're going to be fine. It's easy to over-react to a bad few games, but they need to stay the course. They'll add some depth in the off-season and next year will make a legitimate Super Bowl run.

Not really

Play calling was brought into question multiple times last year and it was the same story. They come out and do well in the 1st half then come out in the 2nd half and shlt the bed.

Last year it was chalked up to Slowik being green and learning how to call an offense. Now it's injuries.

At some point it's time to stop with the excuses.

Yep. Play calling last night in the 2nd half was abysmal - run twice for no yards and try for a 3rd and long. This is what it looked like under the previous regime.

Defense played too well to lose last night, at some point you wonder if they'll quit on the offense.

Nico will help, he's not a cure all. CJ needs to open up the game more.

Outlook would be a lot better if two things were different. And I hate playing the "what if" game.

Stroud throws good pass to Dell last game. Go up 30-13. Game is over at that point.

Green Bay game. Not go in to conservative mode at the end of our last drive. Pretty much cost us the game.

Although the Chiefs and the Ravens loom in December, rest of the schedule is pretty easy

Should be favored at Dallas, twice vs. the Titans, and at Jacksonville. That gets you 10 wins.

Miami could be a toss-up game but it's at home after their very late bye.

The NFL must really hate the Texans to have them play the Chiefs on 12/21 and the Ravens on 12/25.

This one wasn't on our OL according to PFF.

https://texanswire.usatoday.com/lists/texans-pff-grades-best-and-worst-performers-from-week-10-loss-vs-lions/

Of our 5 best performers on offense, 3 were OL and TE Dalton Schultz.
  • TE Dalton Schultz 86.0
  • WR John Metchie III 81.0
  • OT Laremy Tunsil 77.2
  • OT Tytus Howard 71.5
  • OL Juice Scruggs 65.0

Our bottom five performers included Mixon and Stroud (and no OL for possibly the first time this season).
  • TE Cade Stover 38.2
  • WR Robert Woods 46.0
  • TE Teagan Quitoriano 50.5
  • RB Joe Mixon 52.3
  • QB C.J. Stroud 56.3

From being at the game, overall I felt the OL held up somewhat decently. Sacks seemed to come from CJ holding on to the ball too long.

No push in the run game though

They way this team is playing, there are no "should wins" until they learn how to play in the second half.

10-7 is what I'm thinking. It would signal a pretty easy wildcard game and then probably a trip to Kansas City or Baltimore unfortunately in the divisional round.

Current playoff picture in the AFC:

1 - KC (9-0)
2 - Buffalo (8-2)
3 - Baltimore (7-3) / Pittsburgh (7-2)
4 - Houston (6-4)
5 - Pittsburgh/Baltimore
6 - Chargers (6-3)
7 - Denver (5-5)

Indy & Cincy both at (4-6)

With how we've performed recently it's tough to assume any wildcard game is easy. At 10-7 we get the highest seeded non-division winner and let's say that's Pittsburgh...is their pass rush something we can be confident about protecting Stroud? I like how our defense lines up with them but their defense is not something we can pencil in for an easy win on our way to KC in the divisional round.

big game coming up between the Ravens (7-3) and Steelers (7-2) this weekend in Pittsburgh

Ravens may have to sweep the season series, since the division and conference tiebreakers favor Pittsburgh

(Baltimore lost to Cleveland back in September)

the Steelers made it to week 11 before playing a division game

Does the OC not coach player execution during the week? If they don't know how to run the plays it seems like the same issue.
