I mean the flip side of not ruling him down on the one is saying he retreated into the end zone and should be a safety.

His momentum took him into the end zone. For plays like that, it's ruled as forward progress. Doesn't have to be because of contact with a defender like if you're on offense.

Not saying I agree with it. But it is what it is.

I mean you can't catch a ball and run backwards into the endzone but I always thought momentum carrying you in like that was a touchback. Weird

Yeah, his momentum went into the end zone and then he even re-established his momentum by getting up and waiting until he was called down in the end zone. That made no sense at all

If you re-establish your momentum, like he did by getting up, then it still should have been a touchback. I could see on the 1 if he just laid there waiting to be touched.
