You have two, generational qbs coming next year. Typical Texans luck to have top 2 pick year before
When picking QB's, there is always a crowd that says wait until next year. Next year there will be several Hall of Famers available for the picking, instead of the riff raff that is there this season.
I don't buy this argument.
Lots of QB's fizzle out going into their final year. Here are a few: Matt Barkley, Brett Hundley, Connor Cook, Christian Hackenberg, Jake Locker, Chris Simms, Josh Rosen, Spencer Rattler.
There is no guarantee the Texans will be near the top of the draft next year to get Caleb Williams, who is the only QB who seems close to "can't miss" at this point. And, if a QB needy team gets the first pick, they will be taking him. I got to watch Maye a little...he is good, but I'm not sold he is better than the top 2 in this draft.
So why gamble for "next year" when you have two prospects (Young and Stroud) who seem to have every tool necessary to be a good NFL QB? Every once in a while there seems to be that Andrew Luck or Trevor Lawrence (and maybe Caleb Williams) that everybody seems to think is a no-brainer, and if there isn't one of those guys, then you shouldn't draft a QB. The last time the Texans were eyeing a QB in the draft, there was also a lot of "this just isn't a good quarterback class" or "there isn't a true franchise guy in this class" talk. They traded up for DeShaun Watson, who (personal issues aside) is a legit star quarterback. He went after Patrick Mahomes, the best QB of his generation, and a guy who might give Brady a run before his career is over. Both were drafted in the middle of the first.
My point is that drafting a QB is crapshoot. The Texans need to take advantage of being where they are in the draft in a year where there is a QB prospect worthy of going second overall. It may not work out, and if so, you cut bait in a few years and try again. Can't be scared to roll the dice.
In the Shanahan/Kubiak system, both Young and Stroud should be successful. I'm hoping we get Young, but I think the Texans will get a good starting quarterback either way. Trading back or selecting Will Anderson is safe and dull.
