Excuse me if this is obvious but I haven't kept up with NFL draft prospects...

What's the deal with Thibodeaux?

Wasn't he one of the consensus top 3-5 guys? Why the drop?
The concerns that I'm aware of mainly have stemmed from his interviews and statements to the media. The narrative about taking plays off isn't one I'd pay attention to, this argument comes up for every single defensive lineman, it's really easy to cherry pick that argument.

He seems rather full of himself to put it mildly, granted these are division 1 athletes about to go pro, most will be. But the perception is he might be such a "me first" guy that he actually doesn't care about the team itself. He's been open that he wants to be drafted to a place like Texas or Florida because of the no state income tax. He made the statement that he went to Oregon/Pac 12 due to the comparative academics of the SEC, which Greg McElroy took issue with. He went to Oregon, not Stanford. He's called himself the best player in the draft. He's called himself Jadeveon Clowney 2.0 as well. This is a guy who was the number one hs recruit of his class, so I'm sure he's been hearing about how great he is for as long as he can remember, and he believes every bit of it. Might sound crazy, but he could legitimately be there at 13 even though he was in the discussion for the number 1 pick.

My gut feeling is he's not going to be a guy that Caserio and Lovie Smith want on the team, at least not at 3. But also keep in mind that teams don't tell anyone who they want, and are more than happy to say things to talk down guys they are interested in. I haven't heard anything coming out of the organization about who they like, I read yesterday they are bringing in Sauce Gardner for an in person meeting, I think Trayvon Walker is as well.

He reminds me of the state statement from Tywin Lannister "Any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king."

Agree completely, he's just past confident with his attitude. On the taking plays off, I would normally agree (I mean Myles took plays off all the time, but was still dominant), but that comment about no opposing coach felt like they needed to account for him when planning against Oregon is a massive read flag. If no one in the pac 12 felt like he was a real threat, and didn't really care where he lined up at just shows that he was the type of player that just wanted to line up in "his spot" and rush the passer (which is pretty much all he did most of the time). You have to hope that he will take a step forward going into the pros (and he might with some teams), but that coaching talk track just screams this is someone who doesn't care about performance at all and just wants to collect a paycheck.

Also to add one more thing, it's all complete internet rumors, but there are some rumblings that something which was covered up for Thibodeaux while he was at Oregon might come out before the draft, which might also explain why he's really starting to slip in a lot of mock drafts.

Plenty of teams out there willing to take a character risk on a guy that slips if they think he's worth it. I also think Houston will want to stay clear from anyone they view as a character risk given how the Watson drama has unfolded.

I hadn't heard the stuff about opposing teams not being concerned enough about him to have to game plan around him. Perhaps they were more concerned with Sewell, the linebacker.

I don't think the Texans draft Thibodeaux. Dude just reeks of immaturity and lack of self awareness. Comparing yourself to Clowney probably did that. Clowney was one of those picks that his athleticism/talent made him hard to lose, but he ultimately didn't accomplish a lot here. If you really want to be drafted by the team. freaking compare yourself to JJ Watt, not the athletic player who took plays off and rarely completed a full season.

I think we go OT at 3 and then BPA at 13 (or trade down) here given Tunsil only has 2 years left and, unless he just loves Houston, I don't see us resigning him.

If we stay at 3 I think we pick from Hutchinson or Walker first and then go OT if neither are available.

Ok, I tried to do a mock where I didn't do a trade, but the system had an interesting scenario where Seattle moved up to 3 in addition to getting Houston's 2nd round pick. In return Houston moved down to #9, got Seattle's 3rd round pick this year, then got Seattle's 1st round pick in 2023 and Seattle's other (through Denver) 1st round pick in 2023.

Would you be happy with that trade if it dropped us to #9 and we had to give up our only 2nd rounder this year?

I think I would if the players fell like this one happened, but I doubt they would....so I figured I would throw it to the group

Unless there is zero guaranteed money (not likely), it would have to....otherwise, they would trade another player with a ton of dead money.

Good for Cooks and Mills. Cooks is pretty good and consistent. Great option for Mills.

This also allows the team to draft WR deeper in the draft. It is a deep draft for WRs.

That seems like a lot for them to spending on a WR right now.

Believe it or not, it's not a crazy amount for someone who got the amount of production he did last year. Also, as Texan_Aggie mentioned, it means we don't have to reach to grab a WR in the first or second round now, which gives us flexibility to target talents at positions in the draft that will probably slide because of the targeted number of receivers that will be selected.

Eh, he is our best player and goes about things the right way. We're not in contention and I don't think there's a real opportunity cost for this contract. But, it can set the precedent of how the organization rewards players.

Even with this contract, Texans have like >$100M and >$320M in cap space lined up for 2023 and 2024. I think 2024 is the last year Cooks is on the books?

Also to add to your point, we need to know if Mills is gonna be able to take a next step as a starter, so established talent to work with is a must.

I don't hate the Cooks deal at all, and given their cap situation going into 2023, this was a good deal for both parties.

I have no issue with the Cooks deal, he produces and wants to be here.

In other news I've seen several mocks with Houston taking Sauce Gardner at 3. I think they've met with him a couple times. With questions about Stingley's health/durability and the fact Gardner hasn't given up a TD in his collegiate career I can live with that. I still think Caserio goes o-line or d-line at 3 but I would be good with Gardner as well.

I have no idea what the Texans are worth but I can only hope this offer on the Broncos makes the McNairs consider their options.

Agree across the board, I would be fine with Sauce (who has production and apparently has the drive/focus to keep improving), oline or dline.

If they don't go Sauce, and if the first two picks are on the dline, then i would prefer we just take the best olineman, and the grab Jordan Davis at 13.

More fuel to the possibility of taking Gardner at 3.

Ha, let's get Sauce and 3 and Stingley at 13 and call it a day!

If Sauce is Jalen Ramsey or close to that, he would be a good choice at 3. And yes you can build a defense starting with secondary with Stingley or maybe Hamilton at 13. I still hope Carolina or Atlanta wants a trade up to 3 from 6 or 8,and we still get sauce plus picks.

Oh I have both hands and feet with fingers and toes crossed that we can get a trade like those. All kidding aside on my part on the double CBs, I do think we'll start to see a premium on cover corners again with the offensive shifts to tight controlled passing games when defenses aren't blitzing, and the deep ball coming on more designed adlib style throws when blitzed. Only so much a great pass rush can do against those situations.

Another cheap deal to add depth at a position of need.

Yup, keep building depth while we upgrade talent through the draft.

So far the strategy is sound. You don't want to pay for that piece that can take you to the next level now. Give it another draft and see what vets perform.

As the 790 guys said, we can judge them after the first full draft but I remain hopeful that the crew will do something good here.

Oh they are much closer to taking the division back from the Titans than we are, but I didn't know they were in the running for Gilmore. At least his contract should be up by the time we "theoretically" right the ship.
