I may not be as optimistic as you on the OL, but I do think most opinions out there have been a bit too critical.

I agree that Smith is an upgrade over Williams. the other younger guys should be a bit better (there was talk in early camp that Farinok may win the C job). There's a lot of hand wringing over Collins, but I think his game has been in a decline and I will be surprised if he plays 12 games this year.

Tyron is clearly a loss but we've kinda gotten used to having to cover for him

So, I think the line should be about the same as last year with the possiblity of improvement if Smith really does play well.

i admire y'alls optimism but the cowboys have one good offensive lineman and a bunch of spares. a retired 40 year old would be their second best OL if they sign him.

I won't fully disagree, but every team has to rely on spares. In the case of the Cowboys, Kicker and O-line are those spots.

You take any other position group on the field (even WR assuming Gallup returns to form) and we are anywhere from good to really friggin good at every position. There are no spares dragging us down at CB, LB, RB, etc. I'd like to think our coaches are smart enough to work around one group being less than ideal.

" Every team relies on spares" is kind of like saying "half the teams in the country lost this weekend." The o-line being mostly spares nullifies basically everything else offensively. If you can't block well you're in a lot of trouble, and it's not something you can really work around. Every play needs blocking

I think the only big upside to Collins was his contract was relatively friendly going into this year. But the dude had become very complacent. He was not the same guy that came into the league with a chip on his shoulder after getting screwed the week of the draft.

His best years are behind him and I get why they released him looking at the long term picture. But in the short term I think I'd much rather have him at RT, Steel at LT, and Tyler at LG. But who knows, maybe Tyler goes beast mode at LT.

Fair enough. But the same can be said about the QB position. Same could be said about CBs... it's a passing league and if you have spares at CB you really can't work around that.

But I understand and agree... the game is won/lost in the trenches. I'm just going to wait and see if our spares are worse than feared or not that bad.

It's fair to say we have many unproven OL players. Saying they are "spares" is overly negative. Biaditz and Steele started all last year and McGovern got a lot of playing time. If the coaches thought they sucked and were not improving I'm pretty sure more moves would have been made. They decided to part ways with Williams and Collins, so its not like have been afraid to move on from guys.

Interesting note. The vaunted 49ers are starting a 4th round rookie at right guard. He played at UTSA last season.

wont matter if your oline is the worst in the league

You are correct. If they have the worst oline in the league we're done. I'm just hoping that isn't the case.

It looks like Peters was officially signed. It'll take several weeks before he's ready to play. But he'll be in the building starting now. This pleases me.

Yeah, solid move. I think when he gets back Peters, Smith, Biadasz, McGovern, Steele doesn't give me as much heartburn as a week or so ago. I still am curious about the rumors that Fairnok might be pushing for that C or G spot...
jr15aggie

Is Peters gonna start or just be depth? I hope he's capable of starting. I think we all get the feeling Smith could be a pretty good left guard for us this year... and at the same time he could be terrible at Left Tackle.

peters will start IMO. most likely week 2.

I think so too. I think Smith is a mauler that will hold his own at moments, but then literally hold or look silly in many others. And McGovern at guard sucked in his trial last year when Williams had been so bad they were desperate, then he couldn't keep it. I expect Peters at T and Smith back at G as soon as Peters is in playing shape. And I think that will be a serviceable combo if Peters can stay healthy at 40 years old

That's an absolutely massive "if." We are basically forced to turn to a 40 year old tackle to keep our line above water. I would be surprised if he plays all year/isn't washed up
DannyDuberstein

Of course it's a massive if. And it's insane they have found their swing tackle position in this situation given the cap room they have. I still can't believe they allowed themselves to get into a panic situation triggered by losing Tyron whose only question in the offseason was when and how long they''d lose him

Well supposedly 10 teams called Peters. I guess the league is full of idiots.

I'm surprised that Peters, who has made over 100 million in his career souls do a 1 year contract with the Bears then possibly 1with the Cowboys at 41 years of age.

For those discounting Peters and his age/ availability. The guy played 15 games last season and was one of the league's higher ranked LTs in pass blocking. His run blocking is slipping but he was great last year at pass blocking.

Let's see how the Tampa game goes first. If Dak gets sacked 13 times I say we just keep the offseason thread rolling right into next year.

Hypothetical Question. Let's say the season is up & down and McCarthy is gone at the end of the year. However, the defense was pretty dominant most of the year. Who is our new coach if you are Jerry?

Sean Payton seems like a no brainer, but it could cost the Cowboys two 1st rounders and I hate the thought of that. Dan Quinn would be the other obvious choice. Which one???

For me I think I'd have to go with Payton. The thought of losing draft picks makes me ill, but we will have some cap space to work with and we have our QB locked up for a few years... Payton will have everything he needs to make a run.

Payton and write a blank check to retain Quinn as DC

Now we're talking!

I've said this for years however... Jerry is the richest SOB in the NFL with the highest grossing franchise and there is no salary cap on coaches. Just money whip the best coordinators and lets do this! But he's either never offered enough or these coaches are hell bent on being head coaches.

Is it bad for your starting QB to sit out the Thursday practice before game 1 because his shoes made his surgically repaired ankle hurt? No preseason game time either

No joke. All the recent signs are pointing to 8-9 (or worse) and 2nd place in the East, but watch them somehow pull off 12-5 with Tyler Smith starting at left tackle in the Pro Bowl.

Pretty sure no chance he plays this week. Most think they will make him go full practice for at least 2 weeks before he plays... week 3 most likely.

I like Dak but man, what I would give to have Allen wearing a star. Such a fun player to watch. Bills taking care of business against the Rams.

This is the kind of attitude I go in to every Cowboys' season now. I don't think they'll ever win one again.

Rams getting dominated. Seems like Stafford is in need of Tommy John surgery
