Classic Jerry. Franchise tag a JAG for some reason and then the guy gets a big head and holds out. Has any team ever cut a player on a franchise tag before season starts?

That's pretty much what happens with every single player franchised. At all 32 teams, not just the Cowboys. If a player gets the franchise tag, they immediately pout and threaten to sit out of training camp.

Pretty standard stuff. Jerry Jones didn't do anything dumb here.

I would have been real curious to see Shultz' open market value. The other TEs who got a franchise tag were Njoko and Gisicki. Both MUCH more talented than Shultz. But I kinda understood why they did it. The TE number is relatively low compared to other positions and it allows you to see if he can continue to improve. He's really only had one decent season. I don't think they can afford to lock up a bunch of money on him.

Let him sit out. Give the rook from Wisconsin all his snaps and move on. This guy is acting like he's Witten or Novacek.

Since day one Schultz has been an average TE. He does a lot of things good but isn't exceptional at any one thing. I can't imagine he would command a top 5 TE salary with any ne contract.

He's going to immediately look more ordinary without Cooper. He's a bad blocker and one of several reasons why the running game has suffered. His talent is finding an open space and turning around.

This is such a nothing burger... not sure why we are dumping on a guy that has been one of our most productive receivers in the last 2 years.

The Cowboys franchised him because they don't believe he's worth a long term mega TE deal, but they also didn't want to part with him and Cooper in the same season. Schultz then sits out a voluntary camp which is pretty much par for the course around the league.

Pretty sure Dalton is perfectly happy getting almost $11 mil to play next year and then, if he stays healthy, getting a nice multi-year contract next year (probably not in Dallas tough).

He's apparently not perfectly happy because he's sitting out OTAs over it. That is why we are talking about it

Right, but that's almost expected... most guys sit out OTA's if they are tagged and "working on a long term deal". I'm honestly surprised how many people here and fans chiming in on Cowboy podcasts are making a deal out of this.

It only becomes something to talk about if he misses mini camp, because at that point he starts losing money when the Cowboys start dishing out fines for every day he misses. When Dalton Schultz runs out on to the field first day of mini camp you will know that he's not all that upset about playing for the tag.

I don't think sitting out optional workouts is anything big. This is only a story because someone reported that he "wasn't happy with the progress being made on a long term deal".

He also said he would skip the mandatory stuff too

But what happens if he holds out during the season? That means we could cut him without any penalty

Dalton Schultz, on the franchise tag, will make more than double his career earnings in 1 year. He is NOT going to miss games. He's also not going to miss training camp and jeopardize his ability to get a good deal after this year.

I guess it's possible that he decides to skip some mini camp stuff and eat the relatively small fines, but count me as one that says once the "voluntary" label is removed he'll be here.

Just saw that Don Perkins died. Ring of Honor member. A truly great player on some bad early teams.

Quiet off-season. Guess we'll see if playing for the hometown team will help jumpstart his career

It's almost time to start getting our hopes up again. Expected headlines (reality):

Tolbert picking up the offense as fast as any rookie WR ever (he'll be a'ight)

Sam Williams consistently beating Tyron Smith, almost unblockable (he'll get blocked plenty this year)

Tyler Smith is an animal... drove a guy 10 yards and pancacked him (holding, #73!!!!)

Osa put on 15 lbs of muscle, ready to breakout in his 2nd season (Osa might actually be a bad ass)

Gallop 'ahead of schedule' in his rehab (starts the season on PUP).

Dak in the best shape of his career (True-ish)

Zeke in the best shape of his career (Nope, rookie version will always be the goat Zeke)

Micah Parsons is possibly the best defensive player in the league (Facts)

LVE looks like he did 4 years ago (........... nawww)

Boss Man Fat will be a starter (The league will suspend him more games than Deshaun Watson because, well, 'Mericas Team!!!)

Kellen Moore's offense has evolved this offseason (Bubble screen to CeeDee)

Trysten Hill finally ready to live up to his 2nd round pick (gone after last round of cuts)

Tony Pollard, the defense can't seem to stop him (Will get 25-30% of the snaps again)

That's hilarious and frighteningly accurate. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that the roster is worse than last year and the schedule is harder, but people out there are somehow expecting a better outcome.

I obviously hope I'm wrong, but it seems like the sole purpose of this year is for McCarthy to get fired to make way for Sean Payton next year, but we still have to watch it play out anyway.

From a positive spin perspective I will say that some of the guys we dumped had issus that went beyond Sunday performances. I'm not so sure we'll miss them as much as some people think. I was a fan of Cooper in particular, but my understanding is he was always gimpy and missing practices.

I think we are one of the better teams when it comes to young/drafted talent. We have a lot of room to improve just with these guys getting another off-season under their belt. Dak will hopefully be healthy all year and guys like Hooker only got better as he continued to get closer to 100% coming off his Achilles injury the year before.

Tampa just signed Julio Jones. Now tell me why we couldn't have done that!?! Understood that he is past his prime and injury prone... but we are gonna suit up week 1 with Gallup on PUP and have to play against Julio Jones who, baring a training camp injury, will be healthy and catching balls from Tom Brady.

Friggin A this is the crap that continues to frustrate me about this team.

Yea not real sure what they're doing sitting on over $22M in cap space with a few obvious needs left. Not upset about Julio but I'd damn sure take OBJ.

Cowboy Pre practice press conference today. Jerry and Steve sounded fairly like themselves, but McCarthy sounded like an idiot.

I get that the cap can carry over and they are no doubt saving some for next year (chances are big mike is gone and Quinn or Sean Payton are in and they want that coach to have cap space to work with). But we are one hammy or twisted ankle away from going into our first game with a group of WRs that nobodoy outside of Dallas has ever heard of.

I don't think OBJ will be healthy to start the season either so not sure how much he helps us, but they have to get another NFL pass catcher. I'm starting to hear the name Cole Beasley thrown around... hell yes to that, bring him back and sign him up!

I am very excited for Football season, as always, but this year it is almost 100% because of the Aggies. I will watch the Cowboys games and root for them, but my emotional attachment has declined so much over the last several years.
