Maybe they just won't fix the glitch.

Its not a glitch though. I set a consulting hourly rate that was on the high end for my field , and they didnt even contest it. Then when they onboarded me they asked if I had my own liability insurance (I don't), so they said they would just make me a W2 and be covered under their corporate umbrella. I signed on for only 20 hours a week, and then got a 2nd project that was an additional 20 hours a week.

Colleges and universities don't prepare students for interviews or real world applications because they don't see that as their role. They are academics first, second, third and have no room in their mind for the fact that 99.9% of the graduates will go into fields other than academia.

I got into a civil disagreement with the dean of the College of Architecture while I was still in school. I asked him why going on interviews was not considered an excused absence (Architecture had a very strict attendance policy back then, not sure about now), especially considering that we come to A&M to get a degree so we can get a better job.

His response was "you don't go to college to get a better job, and if you do, you are going to college for the wrong reason". I asked him what the right reason was and his response was that I should be going to college to become an educated and more well rounded person and that my degree helping me get a better job or career was simply a byproduct of the system. He did not like it at all when I told him that I specifically came to A&M to get a degree because that degree would allow me to further my career much faster than not having said degree, and that if my goal in life was to be smarter and more well rounded I could have stayed at home, passed my pipefitter exam, made good money for the last several years and read the encyclopedia at night.

I think it's damn near criminal how colleges don't stress the interview process and the after interview process to students. But they don't really care for the most part, they are there to take students (and government) money.

Probably my worst interview story -

Years ago I was at an engineering firm but bored out of my mind because engineers are engineers and I'm not an engineer. A headhunter reached out to me asking if I was interested in a role, which I was. Smaller company in Houston, very well respected, location was good and while I didn't have much experience doing what they specifically did I had enough parallel experience that they were interested in talking to me.

Headhunter sets up interview. I show up. They had no idea that I was coming that day. But the CEO was in the office and made time for me, so somewhat of a save. I got bad, bad vibes from that guy right off the bat. This guy was a PE guy who's firm had just acquired the company I was interviewing with. At the time I had no experience with private equity and he talked up a hell of a good story. He gave me the presidents number and he and I scheduled a lunch for the following week. In the interim, I received a pretty solid offer letter from this company.

The president and I met for lunch and he and I clicked instantly. I thought this was a great opportunity. We had something like a 2.5 hour lunch where we just shot the sht about work, life, etc. - really good overall meeting. He asked about my offer, I told him it was good but a little below what I was expecting based on what the headhunter had talked to me about. President said "send me a counter offer". So I did. 2 days later headhunter calls me and tells me that my offer has been rescinded - because I didn't go through the HR chick with my counter offer and instead emailed the president directly. I was pissed, President called me next day to tell me he thought the whole thing was BS but he was given direction by the CEO and that there wasn't any argument to be made. Whatever, it is what it is at this point. So he and I talked more and agreed to keep in touch because we just got along.

Fast forward a few years and I get a call from a headhunter asking about interest in a position. We talk, turns out it is the same company. Well, almost the same. Turns out that the private equity firm that bought the company out a few years prior had bankrupted the company. The president and a few other key employees pooled resources and bought the assets out of bankruptcy and started the company back up. Timing wasn't good for me at that time (just had accepted an offer with a new company along with a promotion) and even though the company had good financial backing and my salary range wasn't out of the quesiton, the bonus program wasn't there and it was just one of those situations where nothing lined up right. So again we parted on good terms.

9-10 months later the company I hired on with decided I didn't need to be with them anymore. (that didn't upset me much - honestly knew about 2 months into the gig that it wasn't long term at all for me). I called my headhunter and a little over a week after I was laid off I had an interview. A couple 3 or 4 days later I had a late lunch with the VP (my boss). Phone call the next morning to negotiate terms and next week I had a formal offer in hand. All in all I was unemployed for less than 6 weeks, one of those being my choice.

All because of maintaining a relationship with somebody. Networking is huge. Leveraging headhunters helps too, because many of those guys/girls have their foot in the door with the right people in a company and can help bypass the typical HR nonsense. Use the tools you have, don't burn bridges unless it's really in need of blowing up a relationship - and remember that anybody you burn a bridge with also has a network of people they talk with, etc. Especially if you are in a somewhat niche industry - everybody is interrelated to one degree or another in my world.

You can see how sheety things are here. I applied to this job 3 months ago.
The company posts the job again. Okay maybe I suck, as they rejected me in a day, but didn't they find ANYONE who could do the job in THREE months when there is a LOT of talent in the market?

Obviously there is something wrong. Either they are posting fake jobs for show (to attract investors) or they have an H1B in the job already and want to fool the US Dept of Labor. I hope these companies are shut down.

Company leadership is all Indian. So I am likely right that this is an H1B shop.

Why do you keep applying to new jobs? You have said several times on F16 that you really like your current job, your peers and the work you do, even if the pay is subpar……which you don't care about as you make so much money in the market.

I realized this very late in life but I now think everyone should be applying to jobs periodically and never get comfortable. Do a couple of interviews every quarter. Keeps one's interview skills and resume ready. One never knows what can happen these days. One bad Q and they may just axe divisions.

So yes I currently have a job and I like the work and the people and company but I am not happy with title and salary. I took a big paycut to accept this but then the marker is terrible. It's gotten worse since I started. Once we become empty nesters (approaching), I will be free to move and switch.

Investing is my side-gig. I keep these 2 things separate. If I got laid off, it will not longer be a big blow to me anymore like it did in the past. Everyone should have multiple streams of income if possible.

Interviewing "multiple times a quarter" is not realistic nor should it be…

You're wasting your time and the other peoples times

Just network and go to industry events if you're looking to, quote unquote "stay sharp"

Of course it is possible. Keep applying every weekend and when you get a call go through the process. If you don't get calls then modify your resume until you do. Then decide on the job if it is really that good. I am currently doing it, so it is realistic. Keeps me interview-fit all the time.

I only care about my interest, as no one else cares about mine. Companies waste my time all the time with fake jobs and fake interviews, so why should I care about "other people's times"? No more of that. We don't live in a high trust society anymore. Every man for himself.

Network/industry events, all are overrated. Sounds good in theory, maybe it works in your field of work but it has limited value in mine. You need to be in a good tech location like West Coast for it to matter. Industry event socializing is not an interview. You need to be interview-sharp. Of course top management C level jobs are different I am not talking about those.

I, true story, missed Summa Cum Laude by one decimal point because I missed a water aerobics class one time to go to an interview. Offered to make that up by attending 2 classes in a day, but nope. Fkin B in water aerobics cost me that.

Don't think it's ever really impacted my life, but they absolutely do not care.

I did land said interview btw.

Did 3 years there.

And my last day was office visits/ interviews with a crowd of new hires. HR literally came to me and said "we never do this, but we need you to recruit one last day." Which I was actually happy to do. And mind you, recruiting was not by any means my primary job function, but I was good at it. So I, successfully, sold a bunch of new hires on why they should work there, then walked out the door at 4PM.

Well... I was casually looking to make a change, but got involuntarily shifted to actively looking last Tuesday.

Geologist -- Looking to stay in the Oil & Gas and energy space, but open to other opportunities as well.

I'll type up one of my interviews from 2017. That team leader wasted everyone's time in my view (and I think one of his superiors). I had a phone interview with the team leader, and that call went really really well. A week or so later he follows up with a second phone call. This one too went really well, but he was also questioning me pretty hard about one specific project I'd been involved with, telling me that he had been paying attention to those wells as part of new ventures group with his employer. I politely told him that I'd be happy to go over everything regarding those oil wells with him and his team once I was onboard. He concluded the call that they would like to bring me out to Midland for an in-person and he or their travel department would be in touch.

So while continuing to network on my own, I ended up at an industry conference in Houston. I ran into a woman I'd worked with a few years previously when my (now previous) employer was selling off our Eagle Ford assets. She had tried to bring me over onto their team along with the sale, but at the time I was fresh with my employer and resisted. As luck would have it, she was a SME that floated across several teams, including the one that was bringing me out to interview. She and I had several coaching calls off the record prior to my flying out to Midland, and she would be on one of the panels that would interview me. I flew out to Midland knowing the job was mine. I knew they were bringing 3 people out. One of the 3 declined the in person and requested a conference call. I learned as I landed the person directly before me bombed their in-person.

The in person went extremely well and I felt like I hit it off with the teams fairly well. Mind you, I had turned down a field based position with a service company in Corpus as this process advanced. At the conclusion of the interview the individual that brought me out, the same one I'd spoken to on several previous phone calls, walks me out. As the standard pleasantries wrapped up he tells me, "You're the perfect candidate for this role with a company that is working in the Eagleford."

Now mind you, the position was in Midland. Nowhere on my resume did I indicate experience in West Texas, and at no point during our multiple calls did I indicate or even hint at West Texas experience. In fact what I had repeatedly expressed was a willingness and desire to learn new regions and new geologic basins.

As I was getting into my rental to drive back to the airport, my phone rang. It was the woman I'd been networking with. I think she was watching out the window. She asked me how it went. I told her what the team leader said as he walked me out, and her response was, "Well s***!"

I noticed a few days later the position was re-posted. I don't know if it was ever filled. 18 months later that company was bought out by another big West Texas player, and I'm not certain how many, if any, of those teams were retained.

First part I disagree with.
Second part I agree with.

If you are constantly interviewing, unless you are in a field that literally has nobody that talks to others in their field or companies that maintain a database of people interviewed or people that have never left one company for another, constantly interviewing and throwing your resume out all of the time will make you a pariah at some point. And usually sooner rather than later.

This is where keeping your rolodex of peers up to date, being a member of a couple of industry organizations and even as annoying as it can be at times, answering those headhunter phone calls and emails and at least taking a few minutes here and there to talk to them to get a feel for what is out on the market is a good thing. If you find a headhunter you like, keep in touch with them and let them know what you are looking for and if an opportunity doesn't check some specific boxes, you aren't going to be interested. A good one won't waste their time and your time on something they know you will say no to. But like I said above, headhunters often have contacts within companies you don't have or simply can't get that bypass a lot of the initial AI resume reviews that weed out a lot of folks simply because of the parameters that the AI is set for.

I can't think of a single interview I've ever gotten when I cold sent a resume in, even for an advertised role. But I've gotten plenty from either people I know at the company that get me in front of the right person or from a headhunter that knew how to bypass the system.

It's interesting that now that I'm fully employed recruiters are contacting me left and right. Two today alone.

I really think the idea of "stealing " someone from a company is pretty strong and great candidates that got stuck in a bad situation and are unemployed are constantly overlooked.

The job hunt carrousel is a weird one.

Yes, being employed is a stronger look than someone, even if
Less qualified, than a unemployed person.

Right or wrong…it's perception.

We probably live in different worlds (fields).

In tech, there is no such thing as "world is small" unless you are a predator or some kind of criminal. If you can do the job and the job really exists, you are highly likely to get hired.

The risk is not zero, but it is a risk I am willing to take. And everyone should since there is no such thing as company loyalty. If you get a higher paying job and everything checks out, just jump.

Right. I am a but shy of 30 years in the work force myself. I have seen quite a bit.
Lied to by management so many times. 10 years ago, I had 3 offers and in one the VP called me multiple times to get me to join him. I said no, and joined another company which seemed a better fit for the work they were doing. My first week there, a coworker says "you know they are planning to sell the company, right?".

My heart sank.

They had hired me for window dressing to potential buyers. We did get bought, twice in a month, and all management left with their packages. It was horrible situation with people slowly leaving.

To get rid of me (as I was no longer useful), they put me on PIP and eased me out. I had 4 managers in 10 months. I had some personal situations so I did not want to switch jobs (in hindsight I should have). One time I got called in by the VP of HR who accused me of filing for unemployment! I said beach (in my mind), don't you see me in front of you? I am still employed as of now. She got confused and said she will look into it and I left. Nothing after that. Weird place. But I went from 3 offers to not having a job again.

This is just one example. I no longer trust management. Those days are gone (if they existed). Just look for yourself and your family. I learned this very late in life as I was a naive fool. But I have taught my kids to be smarter in this than I was.

Corporations have created norms that people blindly follow that works to their disadvantage and the benefit of the corp. Like not revealing salaries. Why don't we do it? Because corps benefit.

I had applied to a matching job in Capital One and got a reject:

Quote:

Hi, XYZ,

Thank you for taking your time to apply to the XYZ role. Based on the information in your application, some required qualifications weren't met, so unfortunately we're unable to move forward at this time.

Some required qualifications weren't met....

Let's look at the qualifications
Quote:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining one of the following with an expectation that the required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date:
    • A Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Systems or a related quantitative field), Business or Marketing
OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and at least 4 years of Product Management experience

I have both of these "basic" qualifications. Grad degrees in engineering and business. And many more than 4 years of product experience.
I looked at the preferred qualifications and I have them all. 3 out of 3.

But I got rejected even at resume stage.

They probably are laying off and this job role is fake. I hope companies like these get investigated.

Possibly!
But I have friends who work at CapOne and they tell me about all the restructuring happening within, so I am pretty sure that it is a fake job posted so it seems like there's a lot happening so that the investors aren't spooked. I don't think this is an H1B play as those are almost down to zero.

I am up for that. We have many outdated laws that don't keep up with new realities.
We also have many who have the "no laws" knee jerk reaction. A country without laws is anarchy.

Today, whether one is a contractor or a full time makes little difference. Companies can lay FT people off equally easily. Difference is you get bonuses and benefits like insurance etc.

I certainly would in my case, but a contract can be turned off instantly, or all contingent staff furloughed. A permanent role at a major organization is not typically turned off at the drop of a hat (small firms sure, it happened to me).

In the event I need to look again in the future, I would think it would look better to be ____ title permanent role than independent consultant to any future recruiters.
