The thing that bears discussion is that AfD is polling best in Saxony-Anhalt, where there is not a lot of prosperity and there are not many Muslim immigrants (2-3%).
In the state of Berlin, with more prosperity and more Muslims (8-10%), the support for AfD is cut in half.
In Berlin, income is 20% higher and AfD is (narrowly leading, but) polling at about the same level as CDU and Die Linke.
I have seen a similar voting pattern in the UK and France with regard to immigrants, prosperity, and voting for parties that have authoritarian nationalist tendencies that are outside of the traditional governing pedigree.
AfD rhymes with poverty for a reason.
A bunch of people who feel left behind by the 21st century want to send a militia out onto the streets to dehumanize and terrify a bunch of folks who worship God in a different way. They want to round up these people and run them out of the country.

But you are doing what this article is doing - comparing AfD to Nazis.
Yes. I've seen this pattern, before. My favorite little piece of the middle of nowhere in Bavaria has a dark little secret. It's a place that prosperity forgot after 1700. They voted 87.5% for the Nazis in 1932. Nationwide, Nazis pulled 38%, that year. At the time, the Nazis were selling expulsions as a cure for cultural poisoning.
To quote a certain immigrant from Germany to America, "an empty stomach is a bad political advisor."
