Smart move by Trump to call out his suburban and rural voters as backwards and poor.

For one, he said they would or could ends up backwards and poor.

Secondly, it's not as if they still wouldn't vote for him again or even stop supporting him of he actually did.

He knows what he can and can't say to them, and time has shown they're literally nothing he can call them that will cause them to speak ill of him.

Finally, props to Trump for making a stance very clear.

Now if he could just explain why these effing things can't be built in the middle of nowhere. It's not like there's not tons of empty nothing in the fly over states that could be used.
There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance. Hippocrates

I agree that most Trump supporters would let him kick them repeatedly in the nuts, and still wouldn't say a bad thing about him.

But he's not on the ballot, and a bunch of people who are running this fall need to at least pretend they hear the voter concerns.

Yeah, you have to have the AI generated visual propaganda to go along with the verbal propaganda to increase the amount of fear you can create.

Awesome! If this (most likely chinese) random twitter account opposes it, this will be a great thing.

Stop paying attention to the literl communist anti-data center propaganda.

Do your own research. America needs to lead in this space.

And if someone is truly concerned about the environment (they aren't), you would definitely want data centers built in America and not in China.

I mean at some point it has to become obvious to folks they are being manipulated at every corner.

It's funny to be criticized on f16 as using "AI slop" or AI "prompts" when most all of the negative posting about Iran, the economy, Trump etc is driven by folks being fed such info via AI working over their social and other media feeds.

I at least go seek information versus mainlining TDS drivel morning noon and night.

This is what pisses me off about the whole NIMBY thing. Everybody *****es about some company wanting to build a data center in the middle of rich ag land and next door to their family ranch.

NIMBY: "Why can't you go build it some place in the middle of nowhere?"

Company decides to build in the middle of the trans-Pecos where nothing grows except cactus and oil.

NIMBY: "But you are going to destroy our power grid with your energy demands!"

Company decides to build their own power plant entirely off the grid.

NIMBY: "But you are going to produce a bunch of CO2 and your operations are going to be outside of the reach of our community oversight!"

If you don't want the power plant near you and you don't want them to connect to the grid, then you lose the right to be the "community oversight" and to make demands about how they power it beyond making sure they follow the air emissions permitting process.

What NIMBY really wants is for it not to be built anywhere but China. If you think China won't use AI and data control dominance to make demands on the rest of the world, you are delusional. But here we are letting China help whip up a NIMBY frenzy on social media and making it harder and harder for data centers to do business.

Random thought for the morning - I don't know that I've heard anyone proficient in this subject actually talk about what would be the range of scenarios if we do not lead in this effort and cede it to the Chi-coms or others. Run that scenario out a decade or three and then contrast it against the grumbling against private companies building their own power plants behind the meter. Seems kind of lopsided to me.

Americans lead the way on technology and others,
Like China, steal our technology. We are innovators and have been since our founding. We are becoming lazier, for sure, but we still have the best and brightest. Not leading in AI and data center tech would be a harbinger of very bad things to come for America.

And did you know that Canada is the 2nd largest producer of Uranium in the world and has the largest known reserves of Thorium? Do you understand now why China is cozying up to them and why the left wants a wedge between Canada and the US?

Main thing is simply data theft, surveillance, and malware if China wins the AI race. They already do all of this via traditional electronics and technology so now put that into overdrive with AI.

China winning anything is bad for the world. They already corner the market on critical raw materials which makes us completely dependent on them for certain things. And now they are completely disrupting the EU car market and destroying native industry. Volkswagen just approved the most significant restructuring plan in their history because of it. Some might actually argue this is a good thing in many cases, but if you are a German worker you may have just lost your job because of it.

Canada will experience the same thing and we will as well if we allow them in.

Yep, that's just fine with me. The technology is not ready for prime time. We are being force fed something that doesn't scale. The bubble will burst and then what?

More NIMBY reasons to consider.

These companies don't give a crap about how they affect their neighbors quality of life.

They provide no long term benefit to the communities they build in (jobs).

They are only takers, they don't make anything and they give nothing back to the community.

Economic production is certainly a big one and probably the most readily apparent focus of AI-led innovation...and venture AI firms literally paying blue collar workers to let themselves be recorded while they do their job to use as training data...but I'm also thinking about it as a military force multiplier and resource extraction automator.

AI right now is pretty constrained to desktops and screens, but there's vast amounts of money being spent in robotics, drones and the next generation of the tools of warfare.

If a data center provides 20 jobs, it's a big deal for a small town.

I'm in a small town in the panhandle. Our local newspaper editor is big on anti data center. Anyone would admit our town is in the process of dying. My wife's family lives north of Dallas. The contrast between that area of the world and my own town is absolutely enormous.

I find that most people are against data centers here. I grew up on a farm. There was a nat gas compressor station about 3 miles away. You could hear the engines and compressors running from my house on a still day. Nobody complains about oil and natural gas production. Industry and economic development come with traffic, housing shortages, more energy usage, and probably a long list negatives. Economic decline t is not great either.

Thousands of construction jobs, even if temporary, are a big deal for any economy. A typical data center is going to create 30-50 permanent positions, which is nothing to sneeze at in many of the rural areas they are being built.

And while most get some level of tax abatement, most still end up paying millions of dollars in property and other taxes to local cities and counties.

And everybody saying "I don't use AI and these only benefit people who want AI" are delusional. Everything you do right now relies on data centers. Your Netflix movies and shows you watch? Data center. Your HEB curbside order and shopping? Data center. Your email reminders from your doctor about your appt and the medical records you access when they send you a link saying your test results are in? Data center. Your Texags browsing and notification you got banned by the moderator for something silly you posted? Data center. Just about everything you do now days is somehow connected to online data stored or transmitted through data centers, whether they belong to amazon web services, microsoft, apple, or some contractor. We can either build them, or the chinese will. And if you think the Chinese won't eventually make us pay for the power they have by holding all of your data for you, you are delusional.

Data centers built for cloud services vs AI are two completely different animals. The AI data centers are the real problem, they are especially dense energy consumers. If we were only expanding for cloud services, we wouldn't be having this debate.

I still stand by my original statement, these things contribute little to the community. A Buc-ee's provides way more jobs and tax revenue than a DC.

Data Center vs. Bucees

How much new traffic does the Bucees contribute to the community?

And don't look at the ones in Texas where Bucees is normal. Look at the ones in places like Alabama where Bucees is still a destination attraction like Disneyland.

If you build something that is an attraction, people will complain about that too.

Which is what I experienced when Whole Foods tried to open in an old warehouse in The Burbank Rancho in 2007.

We couldn't have it because it was going to bring in too much traffic from other cities and those drivers were going to run over all the horses.

And the funny thing is, that was before Social Media had everyone's mind share. The only thing going then was MySpace tucked quietly away in a massive Data Center in El Segundo.

So a data center does not provide easy access/instant access to information to each and every member of the community including small children? Entertainment such as streaming, mapping for driving assistance, educational utilities, I could go on and on. Yep, data centers provide zero to the community.

This is a bit silly as we can have both - nobody has to choose one over the other.
