The newer centers are not using much water. If your argument is that they are ugly and you don't like seeing rural land being sold for data centers I'm right there with you. There are so many under construction with very few actually operational. Once they are operating and it's nothing more than a big building with a handful of employees I think the pearl clutching will calm down.

You make a living with these things. You will never not have a biased take on it. Which is fine. I don't even hold issue with that. My issue is these likely do need to get built, at scale even, but the current approach of having big money guys fund modern-day well diggers by finding attractive and unregulated places is terrible. Places that recently were in water conservation mode recently, are expected to have material near-term growth, and yet local leaders are approving with less and less transparency. That approach can KMA.

What do you think has changed about the internet and cloud usage that requires a sudden $Tn investment? I'll give you a hint: nothing. Nothing has changed. Regularly scheduled infrastructure is a big ol' nothing burger. Nobody cares. Put them under another Utah mountain or out in the wild.

Data centers are being built at this scale, with this hardware, for hyperscalers to provide AI compute. Has literally nothing to do with your constant argument of internet and cloud usage. What you're saying makes zero sense.

Drones, autonomous vehicles and robots. Lot's and lots of robots. Proximity matters in data transfer. This is being built for the near future, not the now.

This is how my daughter explained it to me, very roughly.

This is at least a thoughtful and plausible consideration. Still, it's incorrect because we know these things are for training AI frontier models, anything getting state of the art GPUs will be. Why she might be correct eventually is because at some of these data centers, there is likely the chance that GPUs will not be depreciated and replaced so quickly, and at those, yes, additional use cases likely apply. If drones, etc. require near by compute that is plausible. But again, these GPUs are designed for crazy token inference, not so much needed for internet of things like drones, robots, etc.

I'll sacrifice US data centers to save American rural
Landscapes even if it means China "wins". **** it. Not my problem. A lot of smooth brains have been duped by that talking point.

Climate change rhetoric was so unbelievably effective that the anti-Climate Change adherents adopted the same mentality of the climate change doomers. Just was dormant until data centers became the talking point of the day.

Ahh. I can see that. We were talking about much smaller facilities than the larger sites. I believe she referred to them as micro or edge. We were looking into a 2 acre facility briefly, she says they're going to be needed everywhere. If not germane to the topic, my apologies.

Anyone here that makes a comment about how they hate data centers are hypocrites. You really want to protest? Shut everything you do down. No Cell phone. No debit or credit card transactions. Walk into a bank for your balance. Only write checks. Dial from you home land line. Play games on your Atari.
