Mexico.

My family left in the 1880s because it was a **** hole then.

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

We should have kept it when Scott took Mexico City.

Why would we want Mexico?

It might look a tad different if we'd have owned it since the 1840s

Can you link to this?

If an American has been kidnapped this is going to get WAY hotter (captain obvious I know).

I'm not going to get in the fine details right now, but a former coworker (American) for an Ag company was carjacked this week by the Cartel outside PV. They had him and his assistant get their bags out of their car. One of the men slid a backpack under the car and then the whole thing went up in flames. They had to walk back to town. One of their passports was destroyed in the fire.

I know the Embassy is working to help them, but they currently are sheltering in place.

There are hundreds of Americans in PV right now working for the major Ag companies. This is because most of the seed production during the winter is done there.

As I was saying….

Back to business as usual. Everyone in this thread thinking this was going to lead to some monumental shift were wrong.

"Publicly confirms", but I think what might have been said privately is much more interesting and relevant.
The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.

Ha, I wonder what the cartels are thinking now after watching the Iran demolition, with their camo-painted pickups and ARs.

If I had to guess, however you say it in Spanish: Sheee-it!!!"

After Trump got elected: "oh…I bet the cartels are scared now"

After el Mencho captured: "oh…I bet the cartels are scared now"

After we blow up Iran: "oh…I bet the cartels are scared now"

My guess is they're still not very worried. Look at their presidents latest statement.

Cartels will always be more scared of other cartels, than anything else. Their social media carnage makes the gang beef in Southside Chicago look like child's play.

On some level, it makes sense for the Mexican gov to work with the cartels as civilly as possible. As long as American demand for illegal drugs exists, there will be a black market to supply it. There is no shortage of Mexicans willing to live rich and die fast.

The "war on drugs" is as futile as the "war on terrorism". You got to address drug addiction and extremist theology at the root.

I tried to explain the same thing. Either legalize it along with the repercussions or accept the black market and organized crime that comes with it.

Well put and apt. What a lotta folks, particularly in the US, just don't understand is that the staged videos of a bunch of hooded mask carrying AK's and AR's riding in the Mexican version of technicals are the pronounced minority of what folks think comprise a or the "cartels".

In reality the majority of the members of the "cartels", from worker bees to the top directors, are never seen and can't be distinguished from every day folks. The previous are interspersed throughout all levels of society and government and don't carry a weapon, don't cut off a head, and don't kill anyone. They just make the every day grunt work and coordination of having a vast criminal enterprise that is a big, big money business function on a day to day basis work.

Rooting out those folks and networks is what is so very difficult and eliminating that segment of the organization is what the "cartels" aim to do to each other.

I think there's a lot of similarity to the modern drug cartels and the mob families. They've got their foot soldiers that re the most visible, but you're correct that there is a lot more that just isn't obvious at first glance.

It's that guy in the coffee shop with a laptop... Cartel member or businessman?

If the "cartels" were just skimming off Casinos in Vegas and Atlantic City no one would really pay much mind. Since their revenue source is illegal drugs smuggled across the border they're a bigger enemy.

What's the business? Poker chips and slot machines? Or is it (on our side of the border) cheap used tires and flats fixed for $2? Is it firewood? Is it trailer rentals? What about a "we-tote-the-note" used car sales? Drive-thru beverage barn...

All legitimate businesses that are primed for a lot of cash transactions where cash can easily be laundered with bogus receipts, and plenty of drive-thru trade where the secret code word gets you an extra bag added to your order.

Not to mention people that DO HAVE normal jobs and moonlight for the cartel. Guy on his laptop is a chemist. Email 1 goes to his boss at work. Email 2 is encrypted and is correspondence with a supplier on the chemicals he needs to make fentanyl.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Well said, agree. I have often made the point that what is taking place in Mex has quite a few similarities to the NY mafia families of the 50s and 60s, prolly through the mid 80s. The one big difference is that what is taking place in Mex really ramped up with dope and ironically a shift to more dope involvement was a major contributor to the mafia families getting popped and fragmenting.

The failed war on drugs has made the profitability of drugs astounding. During the FJB years the money made from protection and transiting illegals was a boon of unimaginable proportions for the crime groups in Mex. And their expenses were lowered and success rate increased.
