I promise you more than you probs want to Believe the violence yestrday was real.

Obvs some AI images like the plane are fake but put on Mexican News and you'll see the Chaos Live.

Agree. The chaos is real and there are people out there putting out false images to take advantage of it.

100% agree. It's worse being in the middle of it, in a country without the best record of honesty, trying to figure out what is and isn't to judge the temperature of your safety.

That one photo of the armed police/military with Noti Tulum written on it was from a video available on X. That was some very heavy fighting and bodies were stacked up on the sidewalk

Quote:

Security Alert Update 4: Ongoing Security Operations U.S. Mission Mexico (February 23, 2026)
Locations:
  • Jalisco State (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara)
  • Baja California State (including Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada)
  • Nayarit State (including the Nuevo Nayarit/Nuevo Vallarta area near Puerta Vallarta)
  • areas of Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Estado de Mexico, Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Zacatecas states
Event: Due to ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, U.S. citizens in specific locations in Mexico are urged to shelter in place. U.S. government staff in Guadalajara (Jalisco), Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco/Nayarit), Ciudad Guzman (Jalisco), Tijuana (Baja California), Chiapas, and Michoacan are sheltering in place until all blockades are cleared, and we urge U.S. citizens to do the same.

While incidents were reported yesterday, February 22, the situation has returned to normal in the following areas: Quintana Roo State (including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum), Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas. Please see the general Mexico Travel Advisory for additional information on these locations.

All U.S. government staff at Consulate General Monterrey have been directed to remain in the Monterrey metropolitan area, and U.S. government staff have been directed not to travel to Mazatlan through Wednesday, February 25.
FLIGHTS

In Puerto Vallarta, flights continue to be disrupted due to availability of flight crews. The Embassy is in close contact with airlines to monitor their plans.

All other airports in Mexico are open, and most airports are operating normally. If you are traveling via any airport other than Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta, we have received no indication of any security-related flight disruptions. Check with your airline to confirm your flight status and schedule.
Some, but not all, scheduled flights are departing from Guadalajara; if your flight to the United States is cancelled, you may be able to book a connecting flight through another Mexican city.
ROADS

Mexican authorities have curtailed operations on some toll roads, reportedly in Puebla, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, Nayarit, San Luis Potosi, Tijuana, Queretaro, Veracruz, and Mazatln, due to February 22 blockades.

Actions to Take:
  • Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements.
  • Avoid areas around law enforcement activity.
  • Check @CAPUFE on X for status of road closures.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911.
  • Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media.

We were planning a Mazatlan trip in April (Sinaloa). That's probably out of the question right now.

Looking through the various recommendations for the different states, several of them say that about kidnappings. I get the feeling that is a general statement about what has happened over recent months or years, not specifically a statement that people were kidnapped in this latest round of violence.

I've spent two Decembers in Mazatlan. Will not return. It should not be on anyone's list to go to anyhow. Not much to like about the place IMO.

This coming from the person who ran for president basically unopposed because the Cartel killed the other 37 candidates.

Seen several people report the Mexico army and navy were working with the USA and not their own president to kill the leader of CJNG. I don't think this is going to be a 48-72 hour war.

I also think everything happening the past month is all connected. We have known since around 2012 that Hezbollah and the cartels have been training together in south America in places like Venezuela. Venezuela has known links to China, Russia, and Iran. The cartels have been probing the border with drones and come to find out they sent people to Ukraine to learn drone warfare.

I would not be surprised if taking down Maduro starting this domino effect. Both Venezuela and Iran lost a lot of money that day, the USA is putting a lot of pressure on Iran, the cartels try something around the border and we have to shut airspace down, and now the USA is working directly with the Mexican military without approval of their president.

Crazy times

Official word is the US military helped the out. Word on the street is that ICE was deep into this.

Was in Mazatln at Thanksgiving and I got the feeling that the Sinola made sure that petty crime against tourists wasn't tolerated. Everyone we met was wonderful even when wondering around town, away from the overt tourist areas. But I also think it was a known thing, that don't cause any issues or bring additional attention to us.

I heard this morning that he was kil... " allowed to die" because he has connections everywhere and would likely be "allowed" to escape.

I saw it was SEAL team 2 which specialize in SDV (underwater vehicles) incursions. I have no idea if any of the cartels have headquarters around the coastlines.

The ONLY reason the tourists resorts in Mexico have remained fairly safe is because the cartels have decided to keep them that way because of the income they receive... but should they ever decide to make a "point" with one of them, there is nothing that can stop them - short of American military, boots on the ground.

I have been to several of them and understand the, "I have always been safe there," comments.... but the reality is that we are only as safe at the resorts as the Mexican underworld allows us to be.

This is a reminder of that, IMO.

The moment this happens, JSOC is fully let loose to either return those hostages or bring a full-force retaliation. We'll see if the cartels are that stupid.

I know that in high school DB dated a dude from Mazatlan for a few years. He was short and appeared to be 100% mayan, but his family had decent enough money and he was very romantic. I can see why she might be fond of the place, but you've gotta put your foot down at some point. That's what Rogelio did...while he was very romantic, he definitely called the shots, and there was no question who was in charge in the hallways of SHS when they walked hand in hand.

My friend's condo is the 3rd one up (with the rugs hanging on the railing). His place is filled with ash and soot.
