Theoretically, couldn't they use the drones as essentially escorts for the ships and go in front of them as they're passing through the Strait?

It's a country of 92 million and a $400 billion gdp. Lots to deal with there if the government leverages that economy to create a massive terror machine.

I don't think laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz is likely to be a strategic success for Iran's governance.

If the 22's are flying into Iran with drop tanks, then it is further evidence that Iran has no Iranian radar coverage left and that it is a very low threat environment. Drop tanks on a F-22 or F-35 are a sign they are not worried about stealth.

Except they are all docked when hit. Wouldn't you expect to see some mine laying boats, ya know, actually laying mines. I would assume we could see a John boat leaving dock and would certainly be tracking it. My guess is this was to calm down the oil markets with a "we got this" kind of video release.

Not necessarily. It could be for an unlikely CAP mission that frees up tanker assets elsewhere. If we weren't worried about stealth you'd see F-22's going home.

do you just think that or do you have some sort of reference point?
both sides are controlling the messaging to the audience, but i think a claim like that needs backup. the regime has been planning for this for a long time. they have an in-depth transition/power continuity plan to keep the irgc in power, knew this was a possibility, and understand ecomomic blackmail/pain is the best card they have to play.
we've dealt a catastrophic blow, for sure. to underestimate an enemy with fanatical zealots at the helm and the time to prepare they've had at this point would be repeating the mistakes of the past.
