We had a secret base in Iran? I remember hearing about Israel having one in Iraq, but wasn't aware of ours.

Probably referring to the temp base we built to rescue the downed fighter pilot from a month or two ago.

Perhaps that's why it's called a secret base?

Isn't brine pumped into the storage caverns to displace the crude? Damaging the formation doesn't make sense.

They currently pump brine in. Sandia has modeled the 60+ caverns and the DOE (owners of caverns) have an idea about what they can and can't do to each cavern with regards to stressing the formation.

There are concerns that cycling oil and brine in and out for market management will prematurely degrade the caverns.

Also, there is some realistic floor at which the SPR needs to keep spare capacity. Where the engineering floor is and management floor is are probably different. I would guess somewhere in the 200,000,000's is where various groups (military planners and reservoir engineers) start sounding the alarm about the drawdown rate. 300,000,000 is the number I've heard thrown around as, 'We are low, what would you like to do given this information.'

I have never served in the military and no zilch about military strategy or tactics, but it seems to me that perhaps part of the avoidance of the rush back to bombing, etc., is that we are waiting for some sort of regime change or maybe more likely, the replenishment of certain weapons. Or maybe we are waiting on intelligence on the nuclear materials? It is very unlike Trump to look weak or uncertain.

Nope

it's because the Stock Market was at all time highs and there is a Congressional midterm election in 5 months with oil at $95 a barrel

So they shot down a drone last week and chopper this week. I was never for this war and want it to end but Trump cant continue to make us look weak. Seems like they have made some serious upgrade on air defense systems.

Based on knocking down a helicopter and drone? Probably the only two flights we dared make over Iran and they got BOTH of them. 100% kill rate. Most awesome Iran?

Exactly how did you arrive at us looking "weak" because we don't drop a nuke when a toy is broken.

Keeping it war related for mods. When you have to use drone boats because you don't want to get other aircraft knocked out of the sky thats not what winning looks like. I want us to win but wanting and doing its is 2 different things. Iran is dictating conditions because they are knocking our planes out of the sky and we cant transition the strait. Thats not what winning looks like.

Remember the lesson from the film Saving Private Ryan - is one man's (in this case, two men's lives) worth the lives of several others? Yeah, we could send in live assets to recover those airmen, but with all the live fire still going on, it's likely that we lose additional personnel. Trump is not making us look weak in recovering our guys by using drone boats here.

If they control that much of the strait when we have the worlds best everything we do look weak. All our technogy firepower we spend hundreds of billions on and we can't control a area that small it doesn't make us look strong. I would think we could put a end to that live fire pretty quickly. Since we have already won and they have no army navy or air force we should be able to control everything especially international waters.

Its not about the small island, is the fact there are hundreds of miles of coastline that only require 3 dudes and weekend trip to bass pro shop to rig up something that will shut down the straight.

And that requires boots on ground to solve.

Now, take out the bridges, fuel depots, and electrical power, and see how the dudes do.

Right, I agree. Its just an escalation that you can't easily extract yourself from. There seems to be a view that the current situation we can easily extract ourselves from but taking out that infrastructure and widening the scope of war is a bridge too far.

There would not be anything to have to extract from

This appears to be what is happening.

President Trump and
@CENTCOM
announced Project Freedom to escort ships through the Strait. The US evacuated two US ships but then curtailed the operation.
It appears that the US resumed the operation using autonomous vehicles, aircraft and drones to escort ships through the southern part of the Strait, near the coast of Oman.
Iran has responded with targeting of some ships, these include HMM Namu and CMA CGM San Antonio. The US has responded with airstrikes against Iran.
What has transpired is tankers, including Very Large Crude Carriers are exiting the Persian Gulf. Then, per
@TankerTrackers
, the VLCCs are conducting ship-to-ship (STS) transfers to other tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
The empty tankers, which ran the Strait with their AIS, run back through the Strait to pick up a new load of oil from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar or Iraq.
The Apache helicopter that recently crashed was probably a part of this operation.
This explains why we have not seen an appreciable drop in the number of ships stuck in the Persian Gulf. By running the same ships, war risk insurance, potentially provided by the US through the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) through a pool of approximately of $40 billion, could be covering these ships making the transits.
This would also explain the recent announcement by Kuwait to fix new contracts for its oil.
The question is how long is this sustainable and at what level is oil moving daily. With current pipelines through Saudi Arabia and the UAE, this system would need to move approximately 12-14M barrels/day through the Strait.

If this is accurate, it would explain a lot about Trump's willingness to let this drag out.

Individual caverns are completely emptied periodically for workovers and integrity tests. There is no structural risk to the cavern to completely empty it and leave it brine filled, assuming the drawdown and backfill are managed correctly. Brine, being more dense than oil, creates less of a hydrostatic/lithostatic differential and puts less stress in the cavern walls. You're right that the pressure cycle from drawing down can create issues, but it just needs to be done at a slow, controlled rate.

I think once Iran responds to these initial "self defense" strikes, it'll open the door,(in the administration's mind), to respond with more broad based and intense strikes. Hopefully, Israel is taking out key terrorists as we write….

I don't think Trump spoke with anyone. I think he had a limited strike planned and now has the Iranians running around in circles trying to figure out who made an unauthorized call.
