Maybe she can identify as the 1st place finisher.
If she hadn't don't so awful the other night she would have been 2nd or 3rd.
That's how bad she did
She absolutely blew that short program the other night.
She's an extremely talented figure skater and there's no doubt she's put in years of hard work and dedication honing her craft. On that, there is no doubt...
Athletically and in sport it goes to show that even the best of the best can and do have bad showings and even a momentary lapse in concentration can cost you big.
Then I think about her using her talent and her gift for a political or social standing purpose and i have to wonder if she is/was 100% dialed in on just skating. Across all sport, the Olympic games are considered to be the pinnacle. It may not be the top for all sports, but the every 4 years aspect, and the larger audience certainly gives... Some sports will grant you (based simply on the physiology of age) multiple attempts. Others often get one shot.
Did her putting her sexuality out in public play a role in her poor skate? Did it lead to her falter and (presumably) lapse in focus or concentration? Gold medal winners are laser focused on the craft.
Maybe it's just the bold lipstick she wears... But even before her faltering the other night I didn't see a happy and carefree spirit. Alysia Liu on the other-hand just looked internally happier.
Edit to add.... Alysia Liu... I know nothing about her politics and frankly I don't care. I'd never heard of her until the games started. I can't say I'm a fan of the piercing inside her upper lip, but whatever. She's a magnificent skater. She looks effortless on the ice. The bio-piece they did on her last night she's probably a bit hippy and free spirit, cool. A lot of dancers/performers are. I've met plenty of laid back chill hippies that seemed genuinely happy. Maybe she's a Bernie bro that loves Gavin Newsome. Ok, whatever... But she hasn't made that a part of who she is as a skater. Maybe with her father's history she's not and she loved Charlie Kirk videos. Again, who knows. If her teammate, who is also a magnificent skater, hadn't been the first "openly whatever" no one would care!!!
