We spent the holidays in Austria and southern Germany and saw many groups (mostly men after work and kids during the day) curling in public parks. I finally stopped at one and had my hand at it. These used supersized wooden "stones" that looked more like chess pawns. It had a certain appeal, especially being outdoors with the Alps as a backdrop.

But, I think it was more about drinking beer with the fellas than playing a game like darts or billiards at the pub. And it was freaking cold, lol.
