The stores game the system so that their items can be qualified and sold under the current system. They are just as guilty. This right here is the false presumption that has created this entire mess. In any argument about welfare, it always begins with the notion that handouts is "helping people". It is usually accompanied by anecdotes of individual cases as was done earlier in this thread.

Sure, you can always find individual cases where someone personally benefitted and perhaps even elevated themselves out of their dire position because of it. But as a matter of national or state policy, you have to look at the net cumulative effect not just in isolation but in comparison to other alternatives.

After many decades of these programs, are we better off regarding the condition of the poor or worse? And are we better or worse not just physically, but spiritually and culturally as well? The simple fact that people are willing to make videos bragging about stealing carts full of groceries to get "theirs" is demonstrable evidence that government welfare as a concept is an utter failure and has caused for more damage than it has helped.

We have to dispense with this notion that government welfare is "help", and challenge that assumption whenever it is argued.

This is not a criticism of you TAMUallen per se, because I can tell your heart is in the right place.



Government programs are NOT charity. That has to be the mantra.

I think a legitimate case can be made that a society that is selfish is not compatible with a social welfare system. Removing the social welfare system will not make elements of society less selfish.

Now the question of illegal immigrants on welfare is to me a separate issue. That is tolerated government theft from the taxpayers. That absolutely shouldn't happen.

There needs to be an upper price limit on what EBT funds can buy. I think $20 is a good baseline. I don't buy many necessity items at the store that cost >$20 and those are usually bulk packs. Adjust the baseline every 1-3 years based on changes in the CPI. CPI goes down, baseline goes down.

Online sales should also be prohibited 100%. I make good money and only doordash when I travel. The fact that urban folks are doordashing, paying double the price of goods, with tax dollars is insane.

I thought the big problem was that all people of color live in food "deserts", or so we were told just a few years ago.

Now their biggest problem is not being able to purchase relaxer, shower caps, and strawberry soda with their SNAp cards?

I hear you about the frustration about SNAP recipients. Many kids in the school where my wife teaches at gets not only free/reduced breakfast and lunch in addition to food to take home on Friday afternoon for the weekend. And this is in a wealthy Dallas suburb!
