Food is expensive. A weekly trip for me to HEB is right at $250 to $300. I will be damned if I'll let some low life steal my groceries and my family goes without.

Food banks feed lots of people who aren't eligible for meals on wheels. Lots of them have made poor life choices, but not all.

Oh how did poor people ever survive from 65 years ago to infinity? With no free government groceries.
They had chickens, eggs, a garden, and pigs, cows, and shared/ bartered with friends and family.
I've heard the stories long ago about the neighborhood butchering an animal on Sunday afternoon and sharing the meat. Same with the garden and chickens/ eggs/ hand-me down shoes and clothes.

Several of the stories were from men who grew up poor and became multi millionaires. Both of my parents grew up living in town but had a garden, milk cow, chickens, and other livestock in the back yard occasionally. They were never poor but both my Grandfathers worked hard to provide for their family. All the kids graduated from college.

In fact, for fiscal year 2023 (post if you have more recent data), 19.5% of SNAP recipients are/were 60 or older. I know a LOT of people in their 60s, particularly early 60s, who are not only still working but would give you the dirtiest of looks if you referred to them as "elderly." I'm not far from that age group (I won't be specific as to how long) and absolutely no one would refer to me as "elderly;" now, or I suspect, for another 10 years at least. My sister, pushing 70, isn't what anyone would call elderly just by looking at her or being around her. Yet I know people younger than me -- in some cases many years younger -- that can't get around at all due to injury/illness or whatever.

The definition of elderly is, in a nutshell, "rather old." 60, or even 65, doesn't fit that definition and hasn't for many years. With the continued rising of SS age requirements, even the government basically agrees with me.

You can't really steal food from someone in the parking lot anyway. You're going to end up robbing them when they try to stop you.
