I'm going to venture to guess that I have far more experience with California education than you do after being a public school teacher, helping found a charter school, being married to a principal, and being active in my kids school site council, classroom volunteer, and PTA. I know enough about California to know that it is ok to put gay and trans flags and decor thrroughout your classrooms and teach about how great all things gay and trans are, and that this is more common than you would admit. Of course it is going to likely be minimized in schools in "white bubbles" like Calabasas or Corona Del Mar, where affluent highly involved parents don't skew as heavy to the left and won't take to it as kindly as the less involved parents in failing urban schools, or more radicalized bubbles would.

The Mississippi story is a great one. Unions, politics, standardization, and groupthink decimated reading education (and that is ongoing in many places). MS bucked all that and is reaping the rewards. I hope more follow, but the root causes of how public schools got off track would have to be addressed before I get too optimistic.

But it's also a great example of skewed numbers. A huge reason their ranking was so low is many of the families serious about educating their kids were in private schools.

As for your link, there have been many investigations and updates since and nothing that indicates Walters was the one streaming a dirty movie. Saying he was showing porn in a meeting makes it sound like he got caught mirroring a porn site or something. There are plenty of things to criticize him about - including his response to the incident. But the incident itself has been misinterpreted and overblown.

In fairness he has done some good things, too. But even those things he could have done in a better way and I question his motivations for doing them.

He has even managed to piss off most republicans, including the very conservative Governor.

They actually ditched the liberals 'equity agenda' and 'vibes-based learning', and started teaching phonics and implementing retention checkpoints like we used to.

Several other States have implemented similar programs now, with impressive success. The New Yorker, of all publications, had an excellent write-up not too long ago. They detailed how the teacher's unions and urban districts who refuse to change, are suffering the most...while State-level mandates have helped a handful of States rise in the rankings for education.

I'm a huge advocate of choice, and support alternatives to public school education with the caveat that with public money you must have public accountability. I don't support a blank check and call it a day. In my education bubble of LA charter schools and suburban public schools for my kiddos, the science of reading has replaced whole language en masse with predictable performance improvements. Actual education in the trenches I have seen as too pragmatic to be political, that's something for elected officials and social media meme accounts.

As for Walters, he's an example of a rightwing woke warrior more interested in politics than his actual job, one he is failing.

The strongest opponents of public money for private and homeschooling in Oklahoma are the homeschoolers and private schools. What passes for "accountability" is actually someone pissing in the soup and we want no part of that.

Public schools are held to these "accountability" standards and they cause more problems than they fix. Failing schools are all over the place and not only do they not get fixed, they often get rewarded. .
