Oh wow two world leaders meeting. Shocking.

And yeah, yeah yeah about what's been going on but still. I'm sure the left will go bonkers over this.

If true Trump sells out Z and Ukraine
Not even a little surprised by Trump giving Putin just about everything

Saving what is left of 'Ukraine' is far from giving anyone 'everything.'

If true, this represents a significant concession vs. previous demands on the Russian side.

The alternative would be to ignore the conflict, sell weapons to Europe for Kiev, and then allow Ukraine to be ground down in a war of attrition for several more years. Hardly a 'win' for anyone but the arms trade, and Putin's pals.

I am really skeptical because Putin has backed himself so deep into a corner of 'Ukraine will become a vassal state like Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are one, when a Russian steps foot in Ukraine he steps foot in Russia, we must denazify the Ukrainians, Kiev is a bunch of Nazis' etc.' that if he agrees to a peace deal that leaves any sort of a sovereign independent Ukraine intact with its own military and Western support such that can still defend itself…..there is going to be a lot of political problems for Putin at Home as Russians are going to go 'So what the hell???? We just got 150,000 to 250,000 of our soldiers killed and badly damaged our civilian economy for some land in Eastern Ukraine but Kiev is still governed by NATO and EU lovers? What was this all about again?'

plus Russia feels they are winning right now and probably motivated to Stall until at least Winter there to see how many extra square kilometers they can grab.

Not buying it. I think this is just Putin trying to play Trump again for time but has no intention of any actual substantive peace agreement. Is just a dog and pony show.

I dunno, pretty sure he knows Zelenskyy et al. basically has to refuse the initial deal. All of Luhansk and Donetsk? That's insane. That would be giving up more territory than Russia has taken since in those areas since the invasion. Including vast swathes that Russia has never controlled. Especially in Donetsk. Russia has only advanced about a dozen kilometers past Bakhmut in over two years of constantly for example in the heart of that Oblast. Some of the bloodiest battles have occurred there. Because anyone who has studied Putin's regime at all, knows this won't be over.

ETA: By that I mean, he will likely try to spin out another "Ukraine only wants war, while I want peace" angle that numerous people will buy wholeheartedly. Easy PR points. And it puts Trump back on the fence. Too easy honestly. Putin may be an idiot but he also has what is called animal cunning that pops up from time to time I believe. Dude is an honest to God gangster and always has been.

Putin and Trump alike are pretty much gangster politicians/guys to a degree, alpha males who are brutal negotiators keen on finding a way to dominate any given sphere they enter into, etc.

Both probably want this to end. It's very feasible to make this financially attractive to Putin's pals, regardless of the financial stresses in Russia debate.

Unless one views this conflict as some sort of 'land grab' (as though Russia is short of acres of land), a pragmatic discussion/resolution makes the most sense. Ending it will also allow Trump to focus more on India/China/Brazil next. I suspect that is his focus.

Will the remaining part of Ukraine be allowed to join NATO ? If the answer is no than Putin gets everything he wants

Do you really believe if the US wanted to we could not arm Ukraine and Sanction Russia to make Russia withdraw except from Crimea ?
The US policy is allowing both sides to bleed out and we have options

Sell out the Ukrainians
Give them The resources to hold the line and start pushing the Russians back
Continue the status quo and likely let Russia win the war of attrition

Yes status quo of letting both sides bleed out is horrible but given what Ukrainians would likely suffer under Russian rule is also horrible.
Trying to hold out and hoping the EU can keep them in the fight til Putin falls out a window is a viable option

If Ceding land to Russia but Russia has to concede that Ukraine is still a sovereign country who will remain well armed and supported by the West to discourage Russia from attacking again in the next few years….that kind of peace deal could work.

However If Russia insists on sticking with their stated demands that Ukraine has to change their regime for a pro-Russia puppet and also demilitarize/disarm with no more Western support so that the Ukrainians are a sitting duck for future land grabs….then Trump would be stupid to accept that deal and zero chance Ukraine or Europe would agree to it.

So we will see what Russia is willing to concede for peace. I am still skeptical that this isn't Putin trying to play games to stall but we will see.

Zelensky throws another wrench into ending the war, as par for the course, ahead of Trump Putin summit next week.

Quote:

- Planning efforts hit a snag after Zelenskyy informed officials of the terms of the Ukrainian Constitution which mandate a NATIONAL REFERENDUM for any territorial concessions.
*This is an important point to note, because it is not just up to Parliament or Zelenskyy

How is this Zelensky's fault for telling people what his country's constitution requires?

Are you saying Ukraine should toss out the constitution?

If he is following his national constitution how is that throwing a wrench in this? Seems like he is following his nations laws.

Well how can they hold an election when they can't have an election? Why didn't he resign and enable the leader of the duma/parliament to run the country? He cites their constitution and laws only when it's convenient to him.

If they hold an election, how do the people in the occupied territory vote?

Considering THIS is around the current situation with occupied territory, I'll agree that this is a significant concession. Although I confess I don't know just how valuable that last chunk of the Donbas is.

But, getting back Zaporizhzhia and Kherson would be huge.

I doubt Putin is actually willing to do this though...I agree that he's just doing this to stall and prevent the tariffs from hitting.

No.

Well I apologize if you don't like her editorial input, and appreciate the feedback. You don't seem to have any substantive criticism though, just complaints about sources.

Personally, I think she has valid points as to the Alaska summit and Ukrainian complaints about it.

I hope the summit is a success.

Some folks' affinity for deferring to a corrupt, dictatorial, pedophilic, pseudo crime-boss is astonishing. Zelenskyy may be dirty but Putin wrote the book. Z is smallest of the small fries in comparison and that's not remotely debatable.

The region needs a long term stable solution and not just "peace for our time" (ie. 10 or 15 years).

He's not.

I held my tongue earlier, knowing that the extremely underqualified Witkoff was headlining the meetings again, just to wait and see how bad it was going to be.

It was bad.

Witkoff, who is so in over his head, literally misunderstood the Russians. He thought they would concede those two oblasts when they in fact, never said they would. HOW IN THE EVERLOVING WORLD, DO YOU **** THAT UP?! Could it be that Witkoff has no real team around him and no real interpreters? He relies on Russian interpreters for diplomacy that is trying to shape world events and always has.

Trump and Trump's team mismanagement of this whole mess and surrounding has surpassed laughable into downright horrifying territory. Putin continues to play Trump like a fiddle and the second hand embarrassment as an American is disgusting.

Oh and yes, the tariffs are already postponed as we speak. Because of course they are. Too f'ing easy...

Oh and to answer your question about the value of that land, it's incalculable as of right now. It is almost the entirety of the armored shield of Ukraine. That area in Donetsk has been the site of the hardest fighting since basically the invasion began. Ukraine has fought bitterly defending that land, only giving a few dozen miles of westward advance in most area after those two years of brutal attritional fighting.

They in turn have invested so much resources and effort into building up that defense of what they have now and the back areas behind the front lines. They would be giving it ALL up in fell swoop if they ceded Donetsk. Putin would get more land and the coveted cities he has been after for two years without another shot being fired, without giving anything in return. While in essence, Ukraine would be giving up their upgraded armored front door to the home invaders coming for their families huddled in the living room.

And all of this is being discussed without Ukraine having a say in anything. Of course they are going to shut it down. It's pure madness and unfair, and insulting. Russia gains everything while giving up a ceasefire. That's all. Which we all can surmise would be temporary in all likelihood.

Arm Ukraine to the teeth. Provide them with everything short of nukes. Allow them to wreck the Russians all the way back to AT LEAST the February 2022 borders, and nothing less.
