Context of watching the whole event makes a lot of difference. The short clips going around X don't do it justice.

"No more money, *****...and also give us your valuable minerals and shut the **** up."

Sadly, this is what Trump meant. Anyone who has been in business knows both sides of a negotiation need to feel they received value for what they are giving up. Trump wanted rare earth minerals and Zelinsky wanted protection from Russia. The protection from Russia was not in the contract. Trump offered very little for the 1/2 Trillion of minerals.

Ukraine isn't a position of strength. We don't have to have a deal. They do. They are the short stack at the table and they don't realize it.

Ukraine doesn't really need our aid at this point which is why I'm not particularly interested if we pull it at this point. Russia simply doesn't have the ability to do much more at this point. Especially with modern drone warfare.

Look, I'm all for sticking it to Russia. A weaker Russia is better for the US (and, a western controlled world… that's the real point).

But I have no idea why Z drifted into that spat with Trump. All he had to do was kiss his azz, blow some smoke, and boom, billions more in aid.

We are not going to force our mod team to sit on a thread all weekend in order to try and keep it from being derailed with personal attacks and trolling of fellow users. We understand this is a contentious issue. This thread is the same stuff we've had to deal with since 2022 on two different threads covering the Ukraine/Russia war and the geopolitical debate on it. We will start locking all of the threads down and handing out mass bans to anyone restarting threads if all of you can't pull it together and be able to debate this topic without the personal attacks and trolling. This is an important news story. We want it discussed on here, but not like this.

It appears Trump will end military equipment to Ukraine because

Europe making a move for the minerals, which is pretty damn low.

Unconfirmed but I read it somewhere.

My only complaint is this shouldn't happen in front of the cameras. This kind of heated exchange has been common forever among leaders of nations, but it needs to happen behind closed doors.

We wanted Europe to take care of Europe's problems. If Europe offers lethal for those minerals then it's a better deal for Ukraine.

At first I agree with you. However, Trump knows the media would have lied about the exchange. So I believe he wanted the American people to see the truth of what we are dealing with. Because the media would have not been honest.

If you can't leave the table you don't have hand. I bet Trump is willing to throw a little support to Z's opposition in Ukraine. poor Z. but you took the assignment. the costume. and really leaned into it.

Agreed. We were able to see Trump, on camera, bend over backwards to defend Russia and in doing so justifiably piss off the president of the country they are invading. It was cordial until that moment.

Dumbest take of the day.

A hero? What makes you think he's a hero?

Gosh, I remember when Trump was president the first time, the leftist media said what a horrible person Zelenskkt was that he was a fascist and a dictator, and Trump was a horrible person to try to deal with him. And then somehow he became a hero during the Democrats corrupt administration.

What a joke.

We are well aware that the the pro-russia side thinks a real hero would lay down and surrender.

The only person that polls higher in Ukraine than Zelensky is Ukrainian General Zalzuhny is more militant towards Russia than Zelenskyy is.

I'd be ecstatic if Trump helped put Zalzhuny in power.

I'm sorry, you act like we haven't already given them billions of OUR taxpayers dollars. It doesn't work that way bub. You will give us your minerals as payback, and because we now have a material interest in your ****ty land, we will protect it. Don't **** it up.

I find it inconceivable that Zelensky is doubling down, tripling down, four times quadrupling down

his disrespect of the President and the United States.

he literally seems to believe that standing up to the USA will make him a war hero or something back home in Ukraine

I have literally in 54 years never seen a world leader take such disastrous public relations steps

other than the Palestinians.

Maybe. The last time the experts planned his exile he proceeded to whip Russia's a**. My guess is we have galvanized all of Ukraine and Europe against the United States and Russia and they are probably going to finish the job which is fine but we have given up soft power in Europe. Something we have dominated since the end of WWII.

Leftists pretending to be military strategists is the most hilarious thing to watch..

oh really?!

so it has been LITERALLY three years of Ukraine at war with Russia and every day for the last six months the Russians gain more Uke territory.

that is WITH $178 Billion in US military aid and thousands of our weapons.

but this genius thinks "now Europe and Ukraine are going to finish the job without the USA"

so Ukraine hasn't been able to push back the Russians WITH American aid, but will suddenly be able to win the war WITHOUT American aid?!?!?

How did Churchill fare at the actual stay with FDR in the White House? The one where terms were set for England to receive increased aid from US.

I suspect he knows that any "deal" Trump will give him is just surrender at this point. Especially with Trump demanding nothing at all from Russia. He doesn't need a deal to get that and might as well save face with the Euros and get what he can out of them.

Depending on which source you believe, we've spent $400 - $900 per American on Ukraine. Given our progressive tax system where roughly half of taxpayers end up paying zero, you can double that figure. Then multiply that by the number of dependents in your family. Then realize that was likely issued in the form of 10-year treasury bonds which you are now paying interest on. Europe has not paid nearly that much, they are too busy enjoying their fat entitlements.

Z needs (got) a reality check today. We are fed up paying for a continual stalemate. They need to suck it up, take some losses and move on or they will bleed us dry and continue to lose men in their war. They need men to help produce babies so they can continue as a society.

Think, Z, think. Hopefully he will go back home, cool his emotionally charged Ukrainian head and come to his senses.

Having been through a few very tense mediations and negotations....for those saying how this is a bad look, imbecilic, immature, show...whatever you want to call it. This is how big things happen.

Good mediators make sure everyone leaves the room upset and uncomfortable - that is how you know the middle ground was located.

What Zelensky is attempting to do is prove the mediator wrong - that rarely happens and only serves to diminish his own position.

HUH???

Actually, GOOD mediators (assuming things got settled or otherwise worked out) have everyone leaving the room on a fairly positive note. They may know (or think) they didn't get the best deal possible, but they resolved things on their own terms. What a good mediator does is have them leaving the room KNOWING that if they go further -- whether it is trial or war -- that BOTH sides will get something it likely doesn't want and probably can't live with.

While I've never mediated international disputes, I can't imagine a mediator thinking his job was to have people leaving upset. If that's the case, he would never get any additional business. No one would think to go back to him and no one would recommend him.

Ukraine has a stronger hand than it's given credit far. Russia only holds about 20% of Ukraine. If the EU steps up with Ukraine then Russia has a problem because one thing that Putin has learned is that his Army is very vulnerable to western weapons. At Russia's current rate of occupation this war is not ending for nearly a decade.

I'm about 100% positive no one on this message board, including you, have any idea what has gone on in the discussion with Russia, and what they might be required to give up. I'm all for you defending your side/point in this, but you can't just outright make stuff up you know nothing about.

What, no. This immediately stops the bloodshed and then buys Ukraine + Europe 2-3 years to get their security organized. Even though Western Europe's run by bureaucratic idiots , their economy is still 10x as dynamic as Russia's. As long as Europe doesn't completely piss away that time (not a guarantee but not our problem), Russia won't be able to outrun Europe in the ensuing rearmament. Thus, Ukraine's security is ensured.
