Stick to the argument.

Why should people who you deem to be "rich" deserve to be hassled by the IRS more than anyone else?
Define Rich?

I didn't say Rich deserve IRS audits.

Those with questionable deductions deserve IRS audit.

As I've mentioned I was audited three times. Never had to pay.

I don't care if IRS audits rich, poor, or middle class. As long as tax is properly paid.

I don't fear cops because I'm not breaking the law. IRS doesn't bother me because I have nothing to hide.

I don't care what happens to the IRS. I care the congress will pass the law for us to pay less taxes.

So.. Basically fire a bunch of IRS employees and prevent conservatives from getting audited.

I am still all for IRS auditing corporations, businesses and especially farmers. In my anecdotal experience, Farmers are the biggest tax cheats. And they illegally use farm diesel all the time. And CA farmers are rich mother****er. So are the Corp who now own farms!
Your cynicism and obvious bias renders the conclusions in your post and anecdotal claim worthless, if revealing. Says more about you than farmers as a group.

Farmers are incentivized to purchase equipment, supplies, services, etc. in order to keep money in circulation, thus stimulating the economy.

Or would you prefer that incentive disappear, more money collected by the IRS that they can turn over to USAID and the like to "dump onto the entire world economy?"
Did I mention they use up gallons and gallons of water to grow almonds to sell to China?

No, but so what? And " what does that hafta do with the price of tea in China?"

You sound like a bitter, disillusioned Democrat. I think that sums it up.

Where did I say Rich should be audited?

CA farmers are rich which is contrary to common perception of "poor farmers" and they're also in the group of tax filers who can have more "deductions" than your typical W2 employees. And I don't oppose IRS audit of improperly filed tax returns.

I just really wanted to know what was going to be the outcome of the DOGE audit of the IRS and how it could mean less tax for us.

I support IRS audit of the following wineries.

PlumpJack Winery in Oakville, California
Cade Estate Winery in Angwin

I think the owners are somewhat rich.

Quote:

Why do you insist on revealing your bias and lack of knowledge by generalizing about the financial status of ALL California farmers?

No doubt many (and maybe even most) California farmers are indeed rich, but most of their wealth is most assuredly "tied up" in high priced land and equipment necessary to conduct their business. Not so much in terms of cash in the bank. Does that cause you to be envious, jealous, or would you deny your posts give that impression?

California farming is rather unique, compared to the rest of America. It's mostly all specialty, high revenue crops that utilize irrigation. Most of America's produce is grown in the Imperial Valley, for example. How would you change any of that, given the power to do so?

**** man...

Replace Farmers with local HVAC, plumber, car dealer or whatever you want. I was just using farmers as a ready example of those who take liberal deductions because I knew some farmers. Maybe I'll pick on McDonald owners. I don't really care. The point is people will abuse whatever they can for profit.

If I could change, I'd start with DOGE investigate Newsom and his corruptions. Like the wineries I mentioned above owned by the ****er.

I follow a lady on YouTube that's a CPA that loves making videos about how finance influencers give the worst tax advice. It's actually interesting because it corrected some misconceptions I had like putting the car under your business name to deduct the expenses. I know lots of people that do that.

If I were an IRS agent and looking for big adjustments with little effort on my part, I'd target 3 areas.

In Texas there are plenty of ranches showing $250,000 to $1,000,000 in losses each year that have a snow balls chance in hell of ever showing a profit. Disallow losses under hobby loss provisions. Easy money for the IRS.

Fair number of people have started dropping their businesses or rental real estate into their IRAs.
In almost all cases, they end up violating self-dealing and/or prohibited transaction rules. Bust them and convert value of all assets in IRA to immediate ordinary income plus penalties.

Examine all people with 1031 exchanges, Decent chance of catching non-business or non-investment assets being used. Also if a lot of real estate transactions reclass the taxpayer from investor to dealer and nail them that way.

But what are we expecting to gain from the IRS audit?

It is probably just like pre-Elon Twitter. You can do the same job with a lot fewer folks.

Please define "liberal". Does the IRS code specify deductions by the amount? So , you're just too lazy to make a legitimate argument, preferring to generalize about all (California) farmers are rich, and now "abusers of the tax code for profit". I don't mind disagreement on philosophy, but you're just a cynical complainer.

I don't deny that some people cheat on their taxes, and I want them exposed and made to comply as well. But one can make that point (does it really need to be made?) without disparaging an entire group of Americans/Californians in this case.

I can tell from many of the responses that a bunch of yall never dealt with IRS. I'm not talking about unnecessary delays in refunds.

I have heard directly that the IRS agents came after these large family offices and O&G companies believing they wrre8paying their fair share. That was a direct quote from one of the lead IRS agents.
Basically saying we know you are cheating on your taxes. We don't have any proof but we are going to apply the full force of the agency and find it.
Like you said most of these agents have no idea how corporate and family office tax works but they are convinced they are right. At no time has it been smooth sailing even after spending months explaing how it works and why they are wrong. They keep coming back with what they think are gotcha findings and everytime they are wrong.

That's nothing new. I've had agents start by telling me that everyone is cheating and I'm wrong. They're going to find it, etc. It's usually the ones somehow on a complex return who is used to simple stuff in the group that does individuals and small businesses. I have learned how to deal with those agents by giving them explanations and then pointing them to the IRM and saying they have to follow their own rules or I'll just request a manager conference. They hate pissing off their managers and know that the taxpayer has that right, so they usually give in. When they lie to their managers or their managers are terrible, I've just told them that they can write it up and we'll just watch them get laughed out of appeals (or they'll get their hand slapped for trying to handle tier 1 issues).

Rarely do we have actual controversial issues, and when we do, the attorneys are involved because it's 10s or 100s of millions of dollars at stake. When someone doesn't understand, that's another problem, but it's not a negotiation at that point. I don't negotiate solid tax positions because IRS agents are uninformed.

I feel almost all Govt agencies need a "renewal".

Question is how to do it? Ideally if there was sufficient time, just start a new one called "IRS Future" or something while keeping the existing one alive and hire afresh and let it lean and mean. Slowly transfer work over and then get rid of the old IRS and renew the "new" one back to IRS.

But there isn't enough time.

I have some lawyer friends that represent large MLPs currently under audit. They said the IRS once requested some broker data and the file was too large to upload to the IRS system. So the MLP was told to print it out and send it in. Apparently it would have been about 2 semi trailers worth of boxes.
