now that the city council has made the minimum wage $21/hour.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14230743/locals-stop-tipping-minimum-wage-increase-washington.html

They make some good points. At that level, you don't really need tips anymore, they say. Or maybe a smaller percentage than 15-20.

Perhaps this is a backlash brewing.

Quote:

One user who shared a Reddit post on the wage hike, which has picked up steam in the local area, said: 'With Seattle's new minimum wage going into effect really soon, most food industry workers are finally reaching a level playing field.

'As a result, I'll no longer be tipping more than 5-10%. And I'm ONLY doing that if service is EXCEPTIONAL. It's only fairhard work deserves fair pay across all industries.

'Any instance where I am ordering busing my own table, getting my own utensils, etc warrants $0. I also am not tipping at coffee shops anymore.'
Trump will fix it.

Per the article (unless I misread it) wages are going from $19.90 to $21.00

If the locals were still tipping at $19.90 it's their own damn fault for being idiots with their own money

I think it finally reached a tipping point.

News has already shown what a $2 gets you. Will be entertaining to watch liberals trying zero for tip.

What about at drive-throughs...? How has this become a thing...?

So tired of how out of control tipping pressure has gotten. The pushback should lead to zero tips for any job where they get paid at least these ridiculously high minimum wages to reset the entire damn system. It's either higher wages or higher tipping (which happens by default by prices skyrocketing due to the higher wages, as well as base tip percentage starting at 18 or 20% now). Not both.

Seattle has become a "no go zone" for me. My sister moved there in the 70's and it had always been such a cool and beautiful place to visit. But the homeless situation down by the waterfront and the woke stupidity of Seattle's inhabitants has ruined it!

Not only am I not tipping, I leaving before the food arrives if someone is not busting their ass.
It takes a special kind of brainwashed useful idiot to politically defend government fraud, waste, and abuse.

Good strategy.

Do not tip in Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington.

Those states do not have a separate lower minimum wage for tipped workers. Thus, waiters in those states should not be depending on tips.

This doesn't apply to traditional waitstaff correct?

Do people really tip 15-20% for fast food workers?

There seems to be a lot of articles where a person just reads a thread on Reddit and then applies the responses to an entire city/country/generation.

When min wages go up so does inflation, this is beyond dispute and has been well documented.

My tip would be zero as I would not be eating in a restaurant.

While at the Pike's Market in Seattle, many of the shops were also charging extra for using credit cards, dubbed transaction fees.

I'm amazed that people push for cashless, then turn around and punish you for using plastic. Even see it a few places here near ATL.

Businesses do not push for cards. They don't like paying 2-4+% of what they bring in. It's now just become commonplace for places to pass that onto the consumer, which I'm not a fan of.

Unskilled labor vs skilled labor. Huge difference that you might want to understand before posting again.

Honestly, id be ok importing foreign legal workers to work fast food if they weren't forced to be paid ridiculous amounts for mindless work with minimal to no effort given. Food is back to being affordable, quality of service is probably better, and all the idiots who want living wages just for (maybe) showing up get a real minimum wage of $0. Win for everyone.

Many of them live up in the Seattle area...

Tipping is WAY out of control and has been for a while. Forget the whole minimum wage hike thing in the OP and other places. I'm not tipping anyone who doesn't a) directly serve me and b) EITHER has a wage built on tips or provides exceptional service. When I was younger, 10% was the accepted tip. Now, it seems you're a cheapskate if you tip less than 20. That's just BS. With the rise in prices, 10 is fine. If you want to tip more, its your money, but you don't HAVE to. I tip on the total bill, including tax, for ordinary service, so it ends up being around 12% or so. 15 if its really good. And every time we go back somewhere, the people that know us don't seem to be bothered to serve us again.

Stop tipping workers paid a full wage, stop over tipping, and don't tip (or don't tip as much) for bad service.

We went on a cruise to Alaska via Seattle a couple years ago. We thought we'd hang out in Seattle for a day and just enjoy it. Walking around downtown we saw open open drug usage, had to step over or walk around multiple homeless camped out on the sidewalk, heard gunfire (that ended our evening out), and to top it off from dinner in a very nice restaurant we got to watch a homeless man defecate in the street.
Lovely city...

It's becoming common in my area to have a cash price and a cc price. I used to only see this with Specs but it's now starting to permeate everywhere else.

Tipping is out of control. I recently had a windshield replaced and the system used by the shop had an option to tip.

Tipping a barista to run a machine which makes coffee is ridiculous. No skill is involved and the service is nothing more than a cashier. I don't tip the cashier at HEB.

I'm around a lot of folks from the UK and 10% is their max tip. At the Vegas Formula 1 race this year there were a lot of complaints about customers not tipping; no tips for taxi drivers that don't assist with luggage, 10% to restaurant workers, etc.

It's crazy that 20% - 25% is expected in the U.S.

This is correct. And all these governments will be complaining that they need to raise the minimum wage to something more "livable." They think it's the effect, but it's close to the cause.

We would be better off without a minimum wage, or if not that, the government should set the minimum wage nationally. I think that would even out the disparate economic zones across the county and encourage people to move around for better economic opportunities than just stay in one spot. We used to move a lot more. Now we think we're entitled to a forced government wage so that we don't have to move. Bad policy.

Spot on. Min wage was not meant to be a living wage, but a part time opportunity for the very young and unskilled to get some work experience before moving on to something better.

Anyone arguing for depending on cheaper foreign workers is no better in my eyes than a defender of the sharecropping system of the Jim Crow era.

Anyone defending minimum wage hikes is a moron that doesn't understand basic economic theory. The minimum wage is Texas is still around $8 for example, but the market has raised even the most menial fast food worker to around $12-$15 in any major urban area. Thats the market working.

That doesn't mean the rest of society has to suffer because of them. It's called personal responsibility and consequences, Mr. Marx. "The poor will always be with you."

Agree. Some people are born ugly too. Some people are born unlikable. Society should not be in the business of equity. That's Marxism 101.

I see same rates in rural areas. No one is making less than this in fast food anywhere.
