A lot of these remittances are already taxed, especially to countries not Mexico. The folks remitting overseas have earned the money in the US, paid taxes and are sending some of it home.
Where they are likely taxed again, depending on the country.

Somehow taxing these legit transactions doesn't seem like the answer.
I want them to leave. The less money they can send back, the faster they go home.

You want to send USD abroad? Go live there.

I think you're confusing migrants with illegals. There are a lot of legal migrants and US citizens that send money back to their country of origin, including to charities. There is a lot of money that also flows back into the US ( for example , international students)
A lot of countries actually have treaties in place to prevent double taxation.

1. I don't care about migrant status, they are draining our country
2. Foreign students should not be displacing Americans because they pay higher tuition.

I know I've used my "neighbors" down the road a couple of times in the last few days because the farmer/rancher does it right, but…..

  • Farmer and worker have done everything legally
  • Workers are here 10 months (I think), go home, come back every year
  • Workers spend money here
  • Workers send money to their families in Mexico

Some of you think our government should steal all their money rather than send it home? If you've ever been around the Rio Grande bridges in the morning and seen the LEGAL workers coming across, you'd know a bunch of the Valley would be screwed if these people couldn't keep their wages.
It only took me a year to figure out this place is nuts!

That's cool, now tax it at 100%.
People would find a way to send money without paying the tax. Best to keep it near 20%
This. The key with taxation is keep it low so that people just pay it without complaint and it doesn't impact their behavior. Sales tax or tax when you buy a car is a good example, it's a nuisance but it rarely impacts a buying decision so people just pay it without much thought. The key is to keep it lower than the risk or cost of trying to avoid it.

The key is most don't really pay taxes at all except sales taxes. If they want to come to the US and get all the benefits of working here they can pay some taxes and fees for the privilege. It shouldn't be everything but it definitely should be something and ideally it is more than US Citizens pay since those folks are avoiding income taxes altogether for the most part.

The best system is definitely getting rid of income taxes entirely and simply having a VAT. That would also reduce government power and influence over your life more than you can imagine.

The specific situation monkeypox is talking about are h2b visas & the temporary workers pay all taxes just like citizens. They get issued a SS card & everything. I know, I used to get 15 guys every year.

Xenophobic much? I'm guessing you were born in the US but somewhere along the line your family came from somewhere else. Sure some of this is cash that hasn't been taxed, but the vast majority as others have said is from US citizens and legal workers who pay the same taxes as everyone else.

Agree they should be taxed or otherwise restricted but by whom? Not all Western Union transfers. How to do it?
This. We may be able to track this now because it's not taxed. The second there's a tax, everyone will find a way around it like using digital currencies. Probably easier to use tariffs for countries based on net money flow.

Also, keep in mind most immigrants (legal and illegal) pay income taxes. The problem has more to do with our tax structure. We tax low income earners hardly anything (the category most immigrants fall into) so while they are paying the legally required tax amount, that amounts to very little.

Yeah, I am xenophobic too. We don't need cheap foreign labor or people who send their money to their "homeland". My homeland is America and my money stays here.

Access to America is not a right.

My family was at Jamestown and every major early US settlement. We have 330 million people, we don't need to become China or India 2.0 with a billion people.

Also, yes I am 100% xenophobic. I don't want foreigners here.

Good thing I don't care about foreigners. They should pay more for the privilege of being here seeing as they are probably here based on some sort of fraud.

Neither do you. Cheap migrants and anchor babies deserve nothing in this country and the harder we make their lives the faster they run home to the ****holes they came from.

I prefer natural citizens. Not green card holders, not fraudulent anchor babies, not illegals, and definitely not any foreigners.

I was talking about illegals. Visa holders pay taxes but don't not SS. GC holders effectively are treated like citizens tax wise.

I'd rather we just go to a VAT with no income tax though so we don't play winners and losers and I also think we should tax remittances with possibly some exceptions. I like the concept of everyone paying taxes and also people having more control over how much they pay in taxes beyond how good of an accountant they have.

You guys know that most remittances are subject to 30% withholding tax, right? Unless we have a treaty in place that reduces that.

It's almost like a bunch of people on the internet are talking about taxes like they know everything about the subject when they know almost nothing.

More than likely, they are only paying FICA and are refunded more than the tax witheld...
