Dickie's moving from TX to CA

Iconic Fort Worth clothing brand Dickies leaving Cowtown for California

The company says about 120 people will lose their jobs as the company moves HQ to California

Dickies, a storied 102-year-old Fort Worth-based clothing company specializing in tough workwear, is leaving Cowtown for the West Coast.
A company representative confirmed to NBC 5 on Thursday that VF Corporation, the branded apparel company that bought Dickies in October 2017 for $820 million, was moving the headquarters to Costa Mesa, California so that they could share space with other brands.
"By co-locating Dickies with our Vans team in Costa Mesa, we will create an even more vibrant campus where creativity and best practice sharing can thrive through greater collaboration and connections creating a dynamic and innovative environment similar to our other VF co-branded offices," the Dickies representative said in a statement.
Dickies said about 120 employees who work at the headquarters in Fort Worth will lose their jobs as a result of the consolidation move.

I realize it's a consolidation back to the mother ship, but in today's age, who the heck thinks it's better to move anything from Texas to California?

Will never be the same Dickies now that they've been acquired and especially once they move to CA.

I don't think Dickies is worn as western wear much anymore. I could be wrong but I feel it's more of a hipster line. Wrangler, Carhart and Ariat has taken over. Still doesn't make sense, especially after the huge investment Dickies made in Dickies Arena.

It sucks for FW to lose an iconic brand, but makes sense now that they are consolidating operations at their parent company. I'm sure they will still make great products but now we know they aren't a Texas company anymore.

Plus we can't have their ice cream and peach cobbler anymore. Lol

Odd that VF would buy Dickies only a few years after spinning off Wrangler and Lee jeans.

edit - Actually spun off a couple years after acquiring Dickies, but still odd they would keep that brand while spinning off the jean labels.

Fixing what isn't broken.

This is a full on, leftist MBA type move with zero forethought on the potential outcome.

I can see the consolidation angle. It appears that almost all the Ft.Worth staff is being let go and just the office work is going to Cali. But, moving any business from Texas to Cali seems foolish tax and regulation wise.

Plus, Dickies has a pretty nice campus in North Ft.Worth at 820 & 35. They have been there for years, so probably own the real estate out right. I would think it would make much more sense to move VF to Ft.Worth

Even people with money aren't immune from the high taxes, anti-business, high crime aspects of California.

Dickies these days does lots of work clothes/uniforms such as anything safety orange, UPS/USPS uniforms and surgical scrubs, etc.

Also, lots of small things such as socks and gloves.

I would have thought that 3M would acquire Dickies because the texture of their mostly polyester twill is a lot like fine grit sandpaper.

True.

Executives in 3 million dollar homes in safe beach neighborhoods.

While their workers can barely afford a 2 bedroom apartment surrounded by homeless.

Yes, these things you list would go on the "cons" side of the page.

The "pro's"? Start with the weather. If you walked outside in Texas today, thats CA 10 months out of the year.

It's becoming a state with the very rich and the very poor who serve them. The perfect liberal utopia.

I don't get why any company would choose very heavy regulations, high taxes, and high cost of doing business relative to other alternatives.

Cali is a lost cause.

VF's corporate offices are in Greensboro, NC. They are just putting the creative folk all together and consolidating like activities.

VF spun off Wrangler and Lee, as well as soke other smaller brands, as a further step to get out of any actual manufacturing. The remaining VF plants at that time were in Mex and Central America. Since then the spin off group has cut about 7,000 jobs in those countries and moved them to Asia.

CA is better for the companies going all in on Asia.

Remember that VF owns the North Face, the company that uses almost 100% polyester, but that refused to sell finished product to an oil company.

VF has not run well with the Dickies brand and very little today resembles the magnificent Williamson-Dickey of the past. May it RIP.

As part of the jean spin-off, VF moved their headquarters to Denver. Probably markets better for brands like North Face and Timberland.

Seriously to a normal brain this doesn't make much sense, due to anti-business (IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE) trend lines in CA. Dumb.

I guess the trade-off will be donating a buttload of money to Dems who will turn a blind eye to all the illegals they can hire for $10/hr so sew up the stuff.

Being an old and rarely fashion conscious(REALLY don't care unless under wife's orders for an event) their 'loose fit carpenter jeans' are really comfy and triple-stitched to hold up. Used to buy them at Walmart for $23 bucks, yahoo. Welp, they quit selling them a while back so working through my stock.
I don't think you know me.

I looked at Newport Beach since it's the closest beach community to Costa Mesa and if you want to be on the beach, for $3M you get a 1900 sq ft townhouse. If you're inland in Newport Beach, for $3M you get a 3200 sq ft home built in 1979.

This appears to be nothing more than a cost cutting/consolidation strategy, but long term they are just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Looks like their credit rating was just cut to junk status, and VFC's stock ticker looks like a train wreck.

It's a shame to see.

So is the company offering the employees that are going to move to California a massive pay increase due to higher housing costs, costs of living in California (i.e car registrations... will their cars not be Calif. emissions certified, state income tax, etc.)?

Has to be a massive employment cost increase for the company.
