She's been given a plea offer to have the charges dropped if she agrees to let social services micromanage her parenting. There's certainly no way she's getting a conviction if this ever goes to trial, but I could see social services moving to take her kids while she awaits trial.

This whole thing is ****ing bull*****

So she has been charged with violating a guideline?

I'll link the info from Steve Lehto's video on the case. I find him to be a neutral and accurate source of information.

The mom said she didn't know where her kid was. She thought he was somewhere on the property, Grandpa was around, but she did not place eyes on him before she took another kid to the doctor. She also purposely ignored calls from the Sheriff's Office when they called her about her son they found walking along the shoulder of the highway. The kid was also homeschooled and raised "free range".

Spidey sense tells me this kid pissed off someone in the community who vowed to call the Sheriff's next time the kid was wandering and Mom knew she was some kind of thin ice.

My parents rarely knew where I was during the day in the summer or after school 40 years ago

So what? 100% of the time the sheriffs office calls me they want a hand out.

I rode my bike a few miles to the Handy Mart and bought my Dad cigarettes and charged it to the family tab when I was 10. This was mid 80's.

I rode my bike about a mile to our little store when I was 8-10 and would buy candy cigarettes, among other things, and charge it to the family tab. The good old days

I would do the same at 8-10 yrs old but would by real cigarettes for my mom.

I'm GenX and did most of the stuff y'all did back then, but these days people are freaking nuts and weirdos. Society is different. I'd say not my kid, not my problem, but my conscience would be torn if that kid ended up on TV as a missing persons or worse.

There are more outward weirdos now, but as far as actual child predators, there were just as many back then. We just see more news now, more of it gets reported, and kid diddling is treated more harshly. With all the doorbell, dash, and every other type of cams now, our kids are likely more secure than ever even if we treated them like Gen Xers

I was 10 in 1960........me and my buds all had horses so we shunned bicycles......too much effort involved. We'd go out on one of the guys folks place and camp out unattended. For long jaunts my major means of transportation at that age was a Farmall H tractor. Pop let me repaint it metallic silver.....called it the Silver Flash...

How about the attitude of the cop, refusing to talk anymore about the reason for the arrest. Power tripping much?

Awful. We need to give kids more freedom. I took off on my bike when I was 10 and would be gone for hours with no cell phones or GPS trackers.

Read the Anxious Generation. We need to give kids more freedom outside and be much more vigilant online, which is where the real danger is today.

When I was 10, I hitched a ride from a stranger from the McDonald's on 35 in DeSoto to Marlin. Stopped at his parent's house on the way out of town, and even fell asleep in his car telling him to wake me up in Waco so I could tell him how to get to Marlin.

When I was barely 6 in first grade the teacher got mad at me for crying and sat me outside in the hallway… I went out the front door of the school and walked home 3 miles away. The principal called my mom and asked if a she knew where I was? They sent my 9 year old brother in 5th grade out on his bike to look for me. Mom found me next door playing in neighbors tree house.

1976 - We were walking 3/4 of a mile to First Grade in the snow in Valdez, Alaska.

And when we'd go out to play for the day, my mom had no idea where we were for much of it. And a lot of the times my 4 y/o brother would join us. It was all so innocent.

By 1982 - We were racing our BMX bikes 2 1/2 miles to swim team practice in Saudi Arabia. Such incredible fun and some epic adventures. My brother and I had Diamondbacks and two Indian brothers from Kashmir had Kuwaharas (Kuwahara was the only BMX bike available for sale in The Kingdom).

Fast forward to 2006 and in California they'd do a walk to school day. School was only 1 mile away.

My 8 y/o daughter decided to ride her skateboard to school and the principal tells her that skateboards aren't allowed at school.

So it's not the kids fault, it's the adults who pull these made up rules out of their butt.

The mom said it's not illegal for a kid to walk to the store and the cop responds it is when they are 10 years old.

So according to the law, what is the age when it is legal for someone to walk to the store? This is laughable

12. In Georgia they are allowed to be left at home alone from 10-12 at home no more then 2 hours. They can't be out and about.
Really? That's crazy.

I guess context could matter. A kid walking a mile in my Houston neighborhood is different than walking down some curvy highway that's littered with roadkill back behind the Pine Curtain.

In mid 1980's when I was 9 - 11 my parents used to send me into the back field with a 410 to hunt armadillos. I was allowed to let my 7 year old sister shoot the gun if I helped her aim it, but she was not allowed to carry it herself.

While I appreciate the attempt, that was an accident. You can't accidentally break most laws, as they require a mental element (mens rea element).

Meanwhile, in Japan, it's perfectly normal for parents to send a 3-year-old to pick up some groceries.

I live in Katy and my kids have been free to roam about as they wish from around the age of 9 or 10. Heck, our school allows kids in 2nd grade to start walking or riding their bikes home alone, so at 8 my kids started riding bikes to and from school that is a mile away all by themselves, rain or shine.

This. I remember walking home at 3rd grade in the 80's from the school to my home (almost one mile) I was a latch key kid.

All the resources spent jacking around good citizens versus keeping their community free from violent criminals.

In that other video he states DCS sent the kid a birthday card. IMO that is way out of line and would piss me off more than the original arrest as they are attempting to separate the son from the mom.

The people of Georgia need to have a day where thousands of people show up in front of this mom's home and have their kids perform the same walk by themselves. Then those same parents turn themselves in to the same Sheriff's department. Make a mockery of the arrest.

Why would they mess with actual criminals who could end their careers (through accusations of racism, excessive use of force, and the like), and lives, when you can bring the full brunt of the law and all its fury against law-abiding citizens, thereby feeding your ego with an exhibition of power that masks cowardice through a false belief that one is merely enforcing the laws and/or (as in this case) protecting society (i.e., children)?

Government overreach.

This will be thrown out by any reasonable grand jury. If it gets to trial, will be thrown out by most reasonable judges. If judge doesn't throw it out, it would be hard to get a jury in a rural court to convict on this.

I would not send my 10 year old that far out..... but it should be parental discretion.

Of course it will be thrown out. It will cost money for a lawyer, but I think she's got a fairly healthy GoFundMe defense fund.

The question is what happens between now and the trial. Child protective services can make her life hell during that time.
