I reluctantly feel that way about much of Lovecraft as well. I love the setup and atmosphere and creativity and so on with almost all of his works, but more often than not by the time you're halfway through the story you feel like the main character is the only person who doesn't know what's going on which can be frustrating and there's not always a payoff that's not already telegraphed. I've read every single thing he's written though, and I do enjoy them. But he was basically only an inspired amateur as a writer.

You should read the book. Its very good,. A scary read as well. The two part mini series with David Soul didn't really follow the book as closely but the later remake with Rob Lowe followed it a bit better.

And the third version of the film that HBO just produced is a steaming pile of garbage in terms of following the book, and just as a movie in and of itself.

First half of his career was coke fueled. Some really good writing in there as a result. Second half of his career not nearly as good and then his car accident made him a bit unhinged in other ways.

I've read many of his books but i can longer stomach them. He is really not a very good writer or storyteller.

We did that back in June this year. Really nice hotel. Took the Ghost Tour rather than the Shining tour (which sounded like it was more about the author's time at the hotel than anything else). Enjoyed the hedge garden out front.

The Stanley Hotel is the name of the place.

We did the ghost tour at the Stanley also when we traveled to Colorado for the Aggie game a few years ago. It's one of six (I think) wood-frame hotels left in the US. I learned that little factoid when I was staying at one of the other remaining wood-frames, The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Back in my junior high/early high school years (late 70s, early 80s), I read every book of King's that I could get my hands on. First one I ever read was The Shining. Went on through titles like Salem's Lot, Carrie, and Danse Macabre. But never could get any interest in The Stand. Maybe the size of that book intimidated me.

I finally tackled The Stand when I was at A&M. When I finished it, I told someone that it was undoubtedly the best book that King would ever write. Plus, I thought it awesome when I came across one character-building sentence in describing the Stu character has having played football at Texas A&M.

A few years after I graduated from A&M, I found a new release of the book in hard cover. This one had some illustrations scattered throughout, as well as an additional chapter or epilogue. In that, the Flagg character returns to some isolated island populated with a primitive tribe, and it was clear that tribe would become his new army. The illustration that accompanied that new chapter made Flagg look like Tommy Lee Jones.

Crap, now I feel like I'm going to have to read that one again. Unfortunately, the sloth from the movie Zootopia does things faster than I read these days. I might be dead before I could finish it.

I mean, one of the greatest horror writers of all time... Arguably one of the greatest writers of all time when you account for sheer number of well above average books.

But 40 years ago he penned a child sex orgy as the method of vanquishing an inter-galactic shapeshifting alien in the form of a clown... It's taken you guys this long to maybe not take his opinion too seriously on... anything?

I believe he never recovered from seeing a friend hit & killed by a train. He was I think ~ 4 or 5 years old and claims he doesn't remember, which I would assume most children would block that out. That incident would explain a lot about his delusional character.
