One thing that might be useful is to have a different set of business hours under daylight savings time than under standard time.

Say 8-12 and 1-5 under daylight savings and 7-11 and 12-4 under standard time. One plus would be that the employees would eat lunch in the winter before the lunch crowd hits.

Really the difference is I'm not a lazy slob. I get up around 4 AM and workout or run. I prefer that extra hour of daylight in the morning because I'm in bed by 8 PM at the latest.

Those who prefer DST all the time are the biggest part of obesity crisis in this country. They need to be out of the rack at 4 AM getting their Daily 5 in.

And that was a long time ago and people have changed a lot. As has the ability to work from home, and have various flexible schedules. Plus a lot more people have moved to the South where you guys have a later equivalent dark out in winter than those in the north.

So you propose that those in the north should unnecessarily suffer for the convenience of those who live on the south?

My suggestion of allowing each state to decide would make the decision more localized so that the southern in the south can choose have permanent daylight savings time and the northern states can choose to continue to switch twice a year.

This won't work because you have to solve for the following order:
1. Sunrise
2. School start time
3. Business start time

Retirees (65 and older) can set whatever schedule they want, but the working age population (20s to 60s) includes all the parents who get kids ready in the morning and often get them to school.

For that reason most businesses are going to start the workday after school stuff and commutes are done.

Disagree, either keep it the way it is or make standard time permanent. I don't want sunrise after 9 am thank you.

Just to clarify for everyone - noon is supposed to be when the sun is directly overhead. Thus the amount of daylight before and after noon are roughly equal. Each town had its own local time since the sun was directly overhead at different points of the day.

Modern travel created the need to standardize times. Time zones are about one hour wide, give or take for state boundaries, etc. Now, solar noon is early for some parts of time zones and late for others.

As you can see, the western edge of Texas is almost a full hour after solar noon. In fact, all of Texas is after solar noon. On DS, solar noon isn't until close o 2 PM for most of the state.

If we stuck with just one standard - preferably the one where noon is when the sun is close to being overhead - jobs and schools will adjust their schedules to make the number of hours before and after high noon work best for them. The problem now isn't whether he hour of daylight is early of late - the problem is that it changes.

I agree. Getting dark at 4 makes days barely usable when accounting for work schedules. Id rather get ready in the morning while it's barely light out over being depressed by so much darkness later in the day. Especially when it's cloudy and snowing.

One of the things I truly hated when I lived in Nashville. Sunset at Christmas is around 4:30 in the afternoon. Yes, it is depressing.

Why I need to keep posting this every year I don't know.
They've tried making DST permanent before back in 1973. It was supposed to be a 2-year experiment and it didn't even last 8 months. Everyone hated it.

I think sundown should always be at 8pm. I hate getting off work and it already be dark.

Or 9 pm. I'm flexible.

The US is exactly the same as it was in 1973. Not a single difference. Therefore, doing this again won't work.

well it is a good thing nothing in the world has changed whatsoever in the last... 51 years.

it is a good thing people do not have flexible work schedules.

It is good there are not options for schooling at different times.

it is a good thing computers never came around to change how we work.

everything is exactly the same, so it is settled.

Not everybody has those luxuries.

And you know that goes both ways don't you?

Technically, he didn't say he wanted DST. He said he wanted sundown at 8 or 9. So, a sliding time schedule it appears...

Changing the clocks would SUCK for his plan.

Honestly, WTF does that even matter? Changing the clocks doesn't change the total hours of sunlight.
